Comments on news posted 2012-07-30 18:38:27: As we roll through the conversion from IPv4 to IPv6, the FBI and DEA have suddenly realized that it may be more difficult to track users, though the "problem" stems more from record keeping than from any real issue with IPv6. ..

And the story neglected to mention the RCMP of Canada that voiced the same concerns in the linked story.

quote:
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sgt. Marc Moreau offered a similar prediction: "We're hoping that people in the community seize the opportunity to work and to have that self-regulation, because, if not, if all of the different governments then get involved, it could get uglier."

Accurate IPv6 record-keeping does more than help law enforcement. It's useful for combating abuse. It's useful for anti-spam measures. It's useful for figuring out what's going on with distributed denial of service attacks. And it's useful for civil litigants.

Where was these AH's when it came to James Holmes?

These turds want to monitor every citizen but dropped the ball when it came to James Holmes, the Colorado movie theater murderer. With all of their snooping the government agencies had the ability to do they were to incompetent and unable to determine that the perpetrator purchased an armory full of weapons before his killing spree. Oh I know all of this tracking is to protect the children but it did not protect the children murdered in the theater that horrible night.

ARIN Policy

Couldn't ARIN just work on policy that requires block holders to update all their abuse contact information per dues paid (yearly).

Re: Where was these AH's when it came to James Holmes?

James Holmes did nothing illegal prior to the massacre.

Purchasing large quantities of weapons and armor is legal in the United States and there are many people who do it.

Holmes' behavior was no more suspicious than the typical behavior of a southerner. The problem is that we live in a society where owning a lot of guns is not suspicious.

No, its to protect the mpaa and riaa. Screw the people who were murdered! The mpaa and riaa are far more important.

Granted his college is probably more at fault, he wrote a letter to a teacher telling him what he was gonna do over a week before he did it, the letter sat in the college mail room(undelivered) until after the shooting from what I hear.

If almost all gun owners don't commit crimes, not holding them in suspicion makes perfect sense. Your "problem" is logic.

Half a dozen people, mostly children, choke to death each day. What is to be done about the "problem" of solid food?!

Re: ARIN Policy

They already do (and have for decades.) But it's not well inforced, or inforcable for that matter.

Dude, that doesn't even work now. Physical (real world) address and internet address have next to nothing to do with each other.

And as we all know, an IP address is not a person.

great...now PDs will have to be logged

Since IPv4 and v6 will have to go through the same point (such as a router) for years to come, every time my router executes DHCPv6 for a PD for my internal network, that'll be logged...for them. It's not that I have anything to hide or want to shirk any responsibility, but still...as the article mentions (or at least implies), it seems all these authorities want to do is erode my Fourth Amendment rights. First they came for the communists, then the trade unionists,...

So we usually carry loads of guns into movie theaters now?

Why don't you go back to being a brony and let a real man speak.

Not exactly what he meant.

How do people know if the guns were props or not?

Ain't that the truth. I remember when the government was freaking about PGP.

Re: Then... how about this?

An IP Address isn't but a corporation is.

It could work but we all know ARIN isn't going to go to the trouble of doing it.
