Comments on news posted 2011-11-07 10:44:15: We recently noted how some of those claiming to suffer from "electromagnetic sensitivity" are fleeing to the West Virginia mountains, believing that residing in areas with little to no wireless signals improves their health. ..

Double blind studies dispute ES claimants

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromag···#Studies

Since then, several more double-blind experiments have been published, each of which has suggested that people who report electromagnetic hypersensitivity are unable to detect the presence of electromagnetic fields and are as likely to report ill health following a sham exposure, as they are following exposure to genuine electromagnetic fields.

It is called psychosomatic illness. IOW, these people are wacko.

we're constantly bombarded

There are so many kinds of RF floating around it's not funny.

Unless you walk around with a lead lined helmet, you're also going to get tiny bits of radio wave bombardment from satellites too

Just paint an M&M white, stamp an indented cross on it, with the numbers 482 below and tell them they just discovered the cause and it is easily remedied.

The End.

Re: we're constantly bombarded

Regardless of whether or not these people are wacko, please get your science correct.

Cellphone signals can often vary from strong -30dbM to weaker -100dbM. Did you know that 10 decibels mean 10x -- one order of magnitude.

The number of zeros of difference between a strong mobile phone signal and a weak mobile phone signal is over 10,000,000. (30dbM and -100dbM is 7 orders of magnitude, which means a strong mobile phone signal can be 10 million times stronger than a weak mobile phone signal!)

Unlike mobile phone signals which very a lot in strength, satellite signals are uniformly weak (typically less than -100dbM), and are a theoretically non-issue for these wackos.

If you knew your science, you'd know that the theory favours strong signals, which are typically found near antennas on the ground, rather than antennas over 30,000 miles above you.

Please become more familiar with the mathematics of signal strength standing near a celltower, and standing under a satellite.

(I think these people are probably wackos, but maybe they have a coincidential body thing such as excess iron, or certain spacing between brain synapses -- that might cause some people to be more sensitive to strong RF signals. I'm semi-inclined to give a little benefit of the doubt, but... No scientist worth their dime is going to dare study these weird people.)

duh. Even I need Science 101. Shame on me!

I meant over 30,000 kilometers (22,000 miles) to the geostationary orbit.

Is a cave the only choice?

Wouldn't it be easier to stay home and build a a Faraday cage for yourself?

@cox.net

I am starting to think this is not wacko!

I have the fun job of setting up point to point wireless antennas and can tell without a doubt it is doing something? not sure what but when I leave them on while configuring them I slowly get a headache and when they assign someone to work with me they only work half days because they say they are getting headaches!

The radios are only 600mW when configuring at low power.

And when I was abducted by aliens.....Just kidding.

Stupid

I wonder, did these people also get sick from cordless phones? After all, many operate in the 2.4 GHz range, right where wi-fi operates.

I bet they haven't, since they obviously think wi-fi is some sort of special, magical thing, not merely something that uses radio transmissions. It can't possibly be just like all these other things they've used for years without any ill effects.

I actually get the same thing where I work. Once I come in, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour before I have a headache....but once I leave work, about 10-15 minutes later, its gone.

Weird, huh?

Isn't it possible though that *some* people might be affected by them?

I agree that they are Mostly Harmless... but maybe they have something wrong with their brain or some type of imbalance and it does bother them.

Granted - I don't think a cave is the answer.....

Who cares about satellites. You've got the sun to worry about with it's expulsion of x-rays, gamma-rays, alpha particles, beta particles and its ability to cause real cancer.

Sure, I'd say its possible, but I'd bet dollar's to donuts you could test them in identicle white rooms, in 7 different locations on the planet, alternating between having frequencies on or off, and they'd not be able to tell the difference.

If they can tell, bam...you win the the prize and we go legit with this.

True... and I think if they really want to prove, or disprove, this never ending debate... they should do just that. Take some of the people that make the claim and really do a blind study to see if they in fact are felling it.

need to make a spray

Call wireless repelent. Kind of like sun block but instead it blocks wireless signals. Just apply it on you all the time and you should be better.

Just a thought.

I was thinking something along those lines too. Assuming they can live with a DC battery nearby, set up a cell repeater that is normally "off" at the entrance to their cave. Pay them some small amount to keep a diary of how they feel on any given day, and trigger the transmitter in the repeater once or twice a month for six months. If they consistently report headaches on the days the transmitter is on, and don't usually report them on the days it is off, that would be pretty good evidence that they really are sensitive to that type of signal. I'd think it would be worth spending a few Euros or a few Dollars to find out if some folks really are sensitive, although I'm sure the cell phone industry would rather not know (especially if it turns out that some percentage of people really are sensitive).

Maybe we should do the research, though. At least a few people have theorized that the increased amount of radiation from cell phone towers is (at least partly) responsible for colony collapse disorder.

Some of you folks who think this is a big joke should remember that most people are not allergic to peanuts, but for some people even touching peanut residue can be deadly. Just because most people are not affected by cellular signals doesn't mean that no one is.

They have done these studies and the subjects react the same whether radios signals are there or not. If they THINK they are there they get headaches. »Double blind studies dispute ES claimants
