Re: Prices with Cappd Billing said by podstolom:Now that caps are slapped on data consumption, do prices go down to reflect User Based Billing (UBB)? Nope, not at all. Just overages @ $10/GB. A money grab, pure and simple. Prices have gone down over the years. I paid $45/mon, now rates are $30 or less/month. I see your point, but that model is different than cable that tended to go up about $5 a year, it seemed and also had caps.
And it was $10 per 50GB, not per GB, so that is $0.20/GB. Just say'n... -- -M |

Re: No meter available? Shouldn't be that hard, especially with SNMP.
Hell, Cacti does this. Just poll the Cable/DSL modem or CMTS/DSLAM every night at about 2a. It's just a few kb (if that) for each customer and they can get an accurate graph on what they consumed each day. |

Re: Prices with Cappd Billing said by timcuth:They are not cheaper than cable, here. I can get four times the nominal speed for $3 less per month on cable. And that is at the normal monthly rate, not the startup promo rate. The reasons I don't switch are 1) the wife doesn't want me to; 2) I hear as much bad stuff about Charter as I do about AT&T.
Tim Charter is horrible and I hate them with a passion. That said, I just cancelled my AT&T DSL and phone and switched to Charter. Why? Because at least Charter has been willing to invest in infrastructure in my city. Charter has rolled out reasonably high speeds across most, if not all, of the city. However, U-Verse deployment has been sparse and availability is basically a joke. So all other things being equal (caps, shitty service, billing errors), at least Charter has made an investment in bringing decent internet speeds to most of its customers here. So I'm going to "reward" them for that. Best of all, instead of getting 2.5M on an up to 3M DSL line (the "best" they would offer me), I've been getting higher than my up to 12M rated speed on Charter.
I'm done with AT&T. |

| FTTP the hold up? I don't know how I can confirm this but I'm wondering if markets where there is a mix of FTTP/VDSL is where the caps aren't working.
IIRC AT&T was going to pull these stats from the DSLAM and I'm wondering if the software and/or hardware needs an update for this to work in some of these markets.
Just an idea.... |
|
 | If service was just better I would switch Charter 12mbs down internet $34.95. My current AT&T service top speed offered 3.0mbs down (barely maintains 2.5) $37.95. |
|
 | My area just made 3.0 available about 3 years ago. The way they update this area we may never see caps. Not that many customers at this prefix |

Re: Monetizing dumb pipes... said by openbox9:...Or when comfortable monopolies exist...whichever occurs first I'd say the latter option won...
It all comes down to a question of "how much is enough". Nobody at AT&T cares that an already (more than) successful billing model is in place. They're looking for ways to bleed even more money from consumers for their services with no regard to the actual cost of providing said service. |

Re: Monetizing dumb pipes... You are correct, but that is true of all companies because you need to remember the laws are setup establishing that companies are there to make as much money as possible for the investors. How they do it and the benefits they bring society as a whole is an afterthought. Ethics and morals be damned!
Even with that though, they could sacrifice short gains to establish long term gains but then you have the stock jockeys all up in arms. Which is funny considering they, in a vast majority of the cases, dont even have voting rights in the company to begin with. |

openbox9Premium join:2004-01-26 japan kudos:2 | reply to vzw emp Why are you worried about actual costs? Underlying costs only matter for the business striving to grow the bottom line. Beyond an obvious minimum, costs really dont enter the equation of what customers will pay. |

| News flash .. "AT&T enhances Netflix video in the mail model NetFlix wins on both sides of the argument of metering. To meter or not to meter DSL, Netflix business model WINS ..!
I can stream movies at will and if I am close to my AT&T cap, I will just get movies in the mail !
I won't cancel U-Verse due to DSL caps as the HDTV is far superior to Satelite and/or Cable.
No matter though, I have a big jar of vasoline to help ease the pain of the big BOHICA that all the carriers send there "valued customers" ..! -- Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy but they become legend. |

 | No meter here in Dallas TX I been logging in almost everyday, sometime 2-3x a day since we received the new TOS and since AT&T announced the Cap, what? a month ago or longer.
I just logged in 10 min ago and still nothing... same message, AT&T cannot capture blah blah blah... |
|
 | meter not working in Dallas, TX Even in Dallas, TX it's not up & running. And this is where AT&T is headquartered! What a embarrassment.
At least set the date of the cap limit to well AFTER the tool is ready for public use! Dear lord, the idiots that run our utilities. |
|
 | Mid Michigan Meter is still under construction. I am glad they are so incompetent...my god who is running the ship over there the village idiot? First they cap the service and act like they are doing everyone a favor, and now they don't even have the usage meter up and running? What a bunch of morons. |

| Canceled When I called last week to cancel U-Verse, the woman tried to tell me that the caps weren't being applied to U-Verse yet and even implied that U-Verse might not be capped at all. I told her I still wanted to cancel.
Just sent my equipment back today. The guy at the UPS Store scanned the bar codes and said that the computer couldn't find them in the system. He was able to bypass that and gave me a receipt, so I have proof if they try to bill me for them.
I've had Optimum Online for a month now and although I don't quite get the 30Mbs they promised, it's still faster than AT&T at a cheaper price (for the first year anyway). |

Re: meters This is what I'm seeing in San Diego as well. I've been getting that same message ever since the caps were announced. It doesn't inspire confidence in me that they will bill us correctly once they do get it up and running.
I mean heck, why announce an effective date for the caps if you don't even have the backend monitoring setup for it? |
