Comments on news posted 2010-12-28 09:23:19: Back in May, AT&T launched a massive free (at least to AT&T customers) Wi-Fi zone in New York City's Times Square, in order to help take some of the heat off of their historically-strained 3G network. ..

Massive?

Where is it? I pass through TS every day looking for free wifi on my iPhone and I don't see any strong hotspots. Maybe I'll go looking again today.

Get It Together, AT&T

These people *have* to get their act together. I've been a customer for the past 3 years and up until a couple months ago, the service was passable. I was willing to accept a few coverage bumps for not dealing with Verizon's GOTCHA! billing. The coverage has been better than Sprint or T-Mob.

However, 3G access in Detroit has just gone to crap and AT&T moves at glacial speed at even acknowledging the problem.

Thanks for the WiFi enhancement. That really works for solving the dropped calls when the phone renegotiates between 3G and 2.5G.

It doesn't matter, ppl will hate ATT, just like hate Comcast

They are still going to be well hated. It will be a plus for some customers, but the majority will still say ATT sucks for some other reasoning.

The good news is that other companies that compete with them and offer free wifi will ramp up their hotspot deployment. At least I think.

I just love to hate ATT, just like Comcast.

Re: It doesn't matter, ppl will hate ATT, just like hate Comcast

As a previous comcast customer and a current AT&T customer their is a difference though, I never had problems with my comcast internet or tv service, as much as they are scum in their business tactics, the service always worked for me reliably, AT&T is different, I've had problems with them the entire 1 1/2 years I've been in contract with them and I'm counting down the days until I can go back to Verizon.

Verizon has it's share of scumminess just like comcast did, but they atleast know how to run a network, I really think AT&T corporate culture truly believes that if you don't acknowledge a network issue it doesn't exist.

Comcast continues to add hotspots in Philly metro area(NJ included) to the extent that I can use my WiFi only iPad in many parts of the metro area. Makes me glad I never bothered getting an iPad with 3G that would have needed an AT&T plan.

AT&T WIFI Coverage Sucks

ATT seems to put their WIFI in very few and select places of business. As I roam about the city here, I see loads of optimumwifi, timewarnerwifi and xfinitywifi hotspots. They are almost ubiquitous. I never see AT&T except rarely, and then only while having a coffee somewhere.

MY GF signed up my netbook to her optimumwifi access, and it works fast and reliable almost everywhere in the City. I have yet to use my AT&T wifi "privilages".

Sometimes optimumwifi speeds out run my Verizon DSL:

But AT&T WIFI is as rare here hen's teeth.

Re: AT&T WIFI Coverage Sucks

I see optimumwifi all over the place and way out of the city, in Central NJ, as a cable vision customer I use it all of the time.

It's there. I get it at the 'red steps'
Took a screen shot a while ago. 'W 46th St & Broadway Ave'
Broadway Ave!, there's no such thing, it's Broadway.(period)
I don't have at&t service but it works with Boingo.
It registers on my mobile Boingo usage as: Times Square NYC Hot Zone

of use TOTAL for a day for $99.99!

If you go over, it is only $59.99 more per minute!

Does anybody know if its possible

to check if someone's cell phone number is active without calling? In old times you would call 0 and ask operator and this was when landline phone numbers were mostly in use.

I just wonder.

If no I might just go to an operator's store and ask if "am I eligible for upgrade" just providing the phone number and name on the account? I dunno, but I wonder.
