Comments on news posted 2010-07-16 14:34:14: Apple this afternoon gave a presentation to address the iPhone 4's antenna problems. This really was the time for Apple to be be concise, candid, apologize, and fix the issue. Instead, the company wound up sounding like AT&T. ..

Bumper Refunds?

Will all of the people who had to pay big bucks for an Apple branded bumper ever get their money back?

Yes. One of the highlights of the announcement.

Chill...

I think the summary is too hard on Apple. After all, this HAS to be the first time they've willingly fessed up to one of their products having a major problem in such a public way.

Apple did the right thing by offering the free cases. At the very least it buys them time to come up with a permanent fix to this problem.

But they fessed up to nothing, that's the point.

Apple-ese for: There is no fix because there is no fix.

They built the thing with the antenna as the chassis. When you touch it, it's no longer tuned to the right wavelength and its performance drops. This can't be fixed in software or firmware, hell you can't even fix it by taking the back off and cutting traces.

Avoiding conductive material from touching the antenna is a mitigation of the issue, and if the customers are satisfied with that solution, then so be it.

Apple was taking things too far when they said that every phone has this problem. True, but not to this degree. I can hold my "Droid" wrong and get poorer performance due to detuning the antenna via coupling, but I'm still not in direct contact with its antenna which detunes it because it's now electrically the wrong size for the wavelength.

More like they tried to say "everyone else does it too." But I also blame the customers for insisting on continuing to use what is indeed a defective product. Why they did not return it, I do not know.
Edited for clarity...

Karl was actually nice. This conference was a joke. He couldn't admit that there was a problem with the antenna instead he tried to say that Blackberry,Samsung and Droid all have same problem.

He sounded like he was upset that the press actually did some digging on this. Came off like a total douchebag.

I've talked to lots of the sheep. They're going into this with their eyes open. They know it's bull, but they love the product and are emotionally invested.

That part I do agree with. Actaully... I don't think anyone I know who has a modern cell phone or smart phone has this problem at all.

Interesting

They can't seem to make up their mind. I chewed Apple a new one on another site too but, in short, Jobs says "I'm not saying we didn't make a mistake" but earlier goes on about how the iPhone 4 is like any other device...making it normal. So my question is...which is it??

Why this hatred?

Why such hatred for Apple? What for do you need their apology? They didn't do a Holocaust, you see. And they managed to prove many other phones have the issue. (No, I don't even have an iphone)
