Comments on news posted 2009-06-30 08:39:01: According to a post over at the Dev Team blog, the group has already managed to jailbreak the new iPhone 3GS -- but they're not releasing it yet. Why not? Apple. The team expects that Apple is coming out with a 3.0. ..

Why

Great; now I can spend $700 to use a phone on the TMobile network.

Jailbreaking doesn't necessarily mean making it work on other networks. Most people that jailbreak their iphone do so because they want to run apps that are not approved by Apples draconian app store censors.

Confused?

So if Apple is coming out with a fix that let the hackers hack the GS..how they going to accomplish hacking it after that "hole" is covered up by Apple?

Re: Why

Why I jailbreak...
I jailbreak for a number of reasons. Being able to change the theme is great, having 5 icons in the dock is great, being able to customize the phone is what REALLY makes the iPhone great. The apps you get from Cydia, Icy are nice too.

Jailbreaking is what I do. Unlocking is what others do to use the phone on T-Mobile, etc.

There is now an MMS app that allows the 2G phones to start using MMS.

Find a new hole.

I doubt 3.0.1 will be completely bug free. All it takes is one security flaw in the O/S

There is more to the story then what you read above. The 3GS includes a new UNIQUE verification key called ECID for each phone. Whenever you flash an iphone with a firmware, that ECID is sent to Apple and they send back a signature check that will then be uploaded to the phone together with the new firmware. You can obtain a signature check at »purplera1n.com/ for your device. Read this post for more info : »iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2009/06/···how.html
The problem is that the iBoot exploit will probably be corrected by Apple in the next firmware 3.0.1 and if you BOUGHT a cell with with firmware 3.0.1 in it, you're screwed as you don't have the ECID signature check from the exploitable firmware 3.0 so you can't downgrade your phone either.

I am NOT an Apple fan, and I call BS on the claim that Apple is any way, shape, or manner DRACONIAN in the approval of apps for their App Store. Proof? How about that there are over 40,000 apps in the App store.

Seriously? That is one of the chief criticisms of the iPhone. There is a completely arbitrary standard where apps are approved or disapproved, often without much notice to the developer as to why.

These two articles are a good introduction to the problems users and developers have:

Re: Confused?

There is no guarantee that the hole will be fixed by Apple. The Dev Team is waiting for the 3.0.1 release to see if the hole was fixed. It all depends on if Apple even knows where the hole is in the first place. Apparently you should be able to use ultrasn0w on the 3GS to unlock it for different gsm carriers but this has not been verified since the phone needs to be jailbroken first.

Just because there is volume doesn't mean the filters are not draconian.
They approve-remove apps on a whim with zero rhyme or reason.

Explain? Because Google makes it better? Open does not always = superior.

You mean the 39995 novelty apps that have no actual use? I'll take 5 of the "I am rich app".

In the mean time I'll putty to a server and make a call on my Windows Mobile multi-tasking device. Btw, if your putty into somewhere and you get a call on your iPhone I hope you weren't doing anything of vital importance because the app will close. The real funny part about this is that the iPhone already is multi-tasking - Apple just doesn't want the user to run multiple tasks.

And why is there an actual entity on who cares what you install on the device you own? Unless of course you really don't own the device you just bought.

I do think there is reason there. They kill apps that compete with the apps provided by Apple. They kill apps that make them look bad in the press and that will dredge up a lot of opposition from special interest groups(e.g the recent porn app). They are a company with a product to sell and they don't want their trademark smudged by controversy.

No, not me personally. I have two friends that have the G1 or whatever it is called.

Yep. A G1. It's not perfect, mind you but it's easy to jailbreak.

As is my 3G iPhone. Redsnow worked like a charm. I am sure that the Dev Team will get the 3GS jailbroken if the 3.0.1 does patch the hole.

Android needs to be "jailbroken" as well to run certain apps. I like my G1 and it's ability to run unsigned apps, but I also rooted it to add more functionality.
