Comments on news posted 2009-05-21 16:35:54: As you might expect, being the first carrier to launch a phone with the Android OS got T-Mobile lots of attention, though it also drew attention to the fact the carrier's 3G HSDPA network footprint was a little lacking. ..

The best part

is the Catharine Zeta Jones part...

Bah, yeah shes the only good part. Its still beyond me why t-mobile would pick a 3g spectrum (1700) that no one in the world uses. Stuck with proprietary phones locked only to them.

As an Android user, I am just happy that Ann Arbor is on the list

The reason is simple: a lack of bandwidth. In many places, they only have 10 MHz of PCS spectrum, and it takes a minimum of 10 MHz to deploy UMTS/HSDPA, so if they deployed in the PCS band, they'd have to completely turn off GSM, which isn't an option. Therefore, they had to choose another band in which they could get a license. The Euro 2100 MHz 3G band was out because it's already in use for other things, so that meant they'd have to bid on spectrum in an upcoming auction, which just happened to be the AWS auction, which is why they're using that band.

She's aging, but still isn't too hard on the eyes. I just watched The Terminal a few days ago and that came out 5 years ago. Good looking there, but as great looking as in Entrapment.

But prior to today, you didn't even know you were on the list. Gotta look on the positive side. I can only say that as I'm scheduled for Q3.

That's not bad actually. I assumed they wouldn't get the AV up and running for a few years. I thought they'd target the bigger markets first.

Sweet!

I would never use T-Mobile unless my only alternative was AT&T (even then I'd consider getting a CB radio instead), but I see this as good news. Since T-Mo has a more reasonable 10 GB data cap, their expansion will hopefully prompt other carriers to increase their caps too.

God I miss the good ol' days of Sprint's completely unlimited EVDO service...

Well, considering most of SoCal has been up already for quite some time... I didn't expect that it would take much to do these markets.

When AT&T did their buying of spectrum, 850MHz was used by nobody else either. Slowly more phones have had the band and almost all do.

Re: Sweet!

What 10GB cap? Just looked on their website and the cap's 5GB now, at least from what I see.

Wonder when 3G will get here...my little town isn't big enough to be listed on the rollout tip sheet, so I'm left guessing...

The data card is yes, but for phones and unbranded devices, it is 10 GB. When you go over, they throttle your connection to an unspecified speed. I have yet to see this happen yet.

Hmm, so could I take a phone SIM and put it into a data card for top speed access? How much per month would that be? When 3G comes around, and if internet choices are still lousy around here (highly likely) it might be something to think about...

If you have a voice plan, it's currently $25.00. It's pretty expensive without. The only unlocked data cards are from stelera wireless. If you get the t-mobile data card, they can tell and put you on the appropriate data plan. That's not good.

The cheap way, is to get the t-mobile sony ericsson tm506, and either order the data cable or use bluetooth. It's a 3g phone, and we usually get 1100kbps/350kbps. More if they upgrade the network. (Some areas are seeing close to 2 meg down). I have it and love it.

Duly noted, though 3G is in neither of the areas I live yet (right outside of coverage at school, nowhere near coverage at home)

I'm assuming Total Internet is the required package for PAM with no voice plan?

Yeah, total internet is required. I have the old $5.99 tzones plan and tether occasionally. As long as you use the epc apn, you get full access. They are coming out with a new $10.00 unlimited data plan for phones. Not much info on it yet, but would get you unlimited data on a t-mobile voice plan.

Useful info to be sure. Now just have to wait for T-Mobile to roll out 3G in my area. Sounds like it *could* be faster than EvDO here, and 10GB > 5GB.
