too cheery

A bit too PR cheery for Karl. Sounds like a copy paste job to me.

Wheres the grinding on how its not really free and only available with a subscription? Also why doesn't it subsidize computers and training for poor like a proper muni wifi system should

wow...how useless

i tried using wifi phone to connect to these hotspots...and was only able to connect to 1 out of 20 attempted after authenticating...and the one i was able to connect to was right in front of my house..
even though it's nice to have free wifi once you pay for home internet...its impractical...wait for verizon LTE or white space broadband...don't even wait for wimax....they're doomed to fail...

Re: too cheery

Perhaps because this isn't a municipal system.

This is a private outdoor wifi system, free for the company's own land-line subscribers.

Probably the only reason Cablevision's outdoor system can succeed where municipal systems have failed is because Cablevision already has the internet connection infrastructure and backhaul network built (their existing plant) and doesn't have to pay someone else to use it.

sorry to hear you have issues connecting. I have no problems using it. Im on it right now posting this! Funny how verizon now is going to offer free wifi to their customers after bashing cable about it. Also rumor is they may match cables new 101Mbps service after bashing that too! Gotta love Competition.

infrastructure investment here we come?

Perhaps data providers (whether they be auditory, visual, or machine) will see free wifi as an investment in infrastructure they can then provide services over, like telephone wires (without the ripping from cold dead hands part) or utility poles.

I didn't know Verizon was going to provide free LTE. If so, I'm switching.

I like the quote. Cablevision is seeing Verison's light, Verizon is feeling Cablevision's heat, we all get all warm and fuzzy.

Re: how kind....

This isnt a muni network. This is a cablecompany run wifi and only cablevision customers can use it.

There is not much to maintain either.
