That's because modern France is a police state.

Sarkozy should remember the French Revolution!

Unless the law includes checks and balances to protect the innocent this measure reeks of a police state. Sarkozy should remember the old saying, shave it clean with guillotine.

How does a country with a government that is afraid of the populace ever get to the point where such a draconian law can even be considered, nevermind voted upon? WTF. Where are the protesters?

The Culture Ministry hailed the outcome Tuesday as an important step toward “preserving cultural diversity and the industries threatened by piracy.”

Anyone have any idea how movie/music piracy affects cultural diversity? I guess the C.M. wants to suppress and control the distribution of all forms of media to preserve the diversity (ignorance)

But anyway, I think the major trouble here is the blurry line between "real" piracy and what many individuals do--

I would define "real" piracy as when illegal copies are produced and sold for money--either sold online, sold as bootlegs, sold as counterfeits, etc..

What many individuals do is copy music and movies that they might like. Granted, the rampant days of Napster in the late 90s and early 00s had to go, that would have surely spelled an end to the music and video sales/rental industries if allowed to continue unfettered.

I did not RTFA completely, but hopefully the "strikes" refer to convictions at court appearance and not to individual counts--i.e. if I download 6 songs some night, and the RIAA can prove it, does that count as 6 strikes, or 1 strike? If its the former then you might as well make this a "1 strike" law.

All this means is....

...that after 1 strike, they start hiding better. And before you know it, everyone is using encrypted forms of P2P.

Two words. "Patriot Act". We all fell for it, we all let them get away with it, and as a result ISP's are now required to log all activity, and give the NSA access whenever they want to, all in the name of "protecting freedom", while the real terrorists have been using heavy encryption for years.

Don't accuse the French of being blind, while we (both Congress and People) were as blind as a bat when the Patriot Act came to pass.

Not once, but TWICE when it needed to be renewed.

Since when does the Patriot Act apply to France. I suppose they must have passed their own version, eh.

Reuters article....

In the article published by Reuters

»uk.reuters.com/article/internetN···hannel=0

They say the following

"Under the terms of the bill, Internet pirates will receive two warnings before having their connection cut after a third offence for a period of up to one year. During that time they will have to continue paying their Internet provider."

So they have to continue to PAY their "provider" even though you can't use the service???

What kind of bull crap is that???

Why/How do they expect to get the payments from someone who was suspended???

Thoughts anyone?

History lesson needs to be repeated in france.

I guess politicians need a review of their history concerning draconian laws. When around 100k worth of people get kicked off the net it will lead to riots just like in their past.

Apparently governments are dumb, does not matter the size of ones military or police. You ask one to shoot a family member or friend the police/military falls apart as well.

Governments are there to protect their people not other interests period!

All around the world the majority are being controlled by the few causing huge unrest. They wanna keep pushing, it will break soon just look at history.
