Comments on news posted 2009-01-28 13:20:50: Last December, the RIAA boldly announced via the Wall Street Journal that they would be ditching mass lawsuits in favor of placing ISPs in the role of content nannies. ..

More AT&T bullshit

Let me guess what's next: AT&T will charge $5 for each call/e-mail when responding to an accusation. Of course, they will have to begin charging thru the nose for overages, like a buck a MB or something. Since they just laid off a bunch of people, this means it will be one of those stupid automated systems that can never get anything right:

"You said you wished to speak with an operator, correct?"
"No, I need to speak to the RIAA department."
"I'm sorry. Please enter your 10 digit phone number, your credit card number, the serial number of your newest vehicle, and your date of birth so I can help transfer you to the correct department."
"Just give me customer service!"
"Please wait. The RIAA has dispatched law enforcement to your location. You are guilty until proved innocent. The only guaranteed way to prove your innocence is by agreeing to pay both the RIAA and AT&T a large ransom. Have a good day."

Lots of bitching etc here but the details are so vague its hard to determine exactly what to bitch about! Is the awful scheme directed against p2p only? Does this mean that even if this policy somehow becomes a reality usenet downloads will continue unhindered?

This whole thing begins to sound like the "ocean level will rise 20 feet by next year" sort of scare rumor. Granted there are forces at work here what would cheerfully require the death penalty for film sharing but it sounds like political suicide for any elected person to support this stuff. The RIAA can't buy EVERY politician.

take a hint...

piracy does sell internet access connections..$$ if consumers realize they can't do what they want.. then what happens to subscriptions? hah, we'll see.. if, in this economy they can live with many more cancellations then so be it.. as 2000-2008 shown us that the big businesses were in the driver's seat.. but now when the economy is not going so well,, it's consumers with the tight wallets which are king.

that's okay, i'm more than sure that the riaa, and mpaa will make up the difference, right? after all the like giving money away.. in the end, what this will degenerate into is some style of discriminatory removal of the worst of the worst from the networks.. but that won't stop the problem.. it only changes the game back to a whack-a-mole situation. nearly as bad as getting into bed with Apple (I could extend this metaphor, but I won't go there..)

Re: take a hint...

I got a letter from Mediacom, threatening to cut off my service for a allegedly downloading and sharing a movie that I never downloaded or shared. There was no effective means of contesting the so-called warning letter, I might add. So I'm dumping them for another ISP. Bastards!

What a Crock

Just what artist's need, more managers to take their money. That's about it, in the end game here.

Re: Newsgroups?

Oh I knew what they were - I chimed in with that since there were some people worried about this 3-strikes rule.

I once had a dream that Sean Connery stayed at my apt., and he had his laptop with Win98 on it, and he knew how to connect to my wireless network. I don't do drugs
