| Verizon Again Tweaks DSL Bundles
This is a difficult time for Verizon. On the one hand Fios has proven to be a great service for many customers. On the other hand it's not available to many DSL customers like myself who are willing to wait (but not forever).
There isn't a magic bullet that's going to curb the defections to cable. Time Warner, Cablevision, Cox, and Comcast all currently offer triple play packages that are too tempting for cash-strapped households to resist. The best thing for Verizon then is to accelerate the rollout of Fios to as many people as possible. Aside from having to negotiate franchise agreements with townships and municipalities I hope they're able to get the service into as many MDUs as they can without going through too much crap from the landlords. -- A man must have a code -Bunk |

| reply to ddg4005 They just don't get it, it's all about speed. I used to have Verizon DSL 1.5 MB, I switched to Charter Cable because they offered 3 MB, now almost 3 years later I have 5 MB with Charter which is the fastest speed they offer in my city. Verizon DSL is still at 1.5 MB, if they are not going to offer FIOS in an area then they have to upgrade their DSL in those areas or they will still keep losing customers to cable. Bottom line is if you want internet to check email chances are you will go with dial-up for about 10 bucks a month. If you want the internet for more than that then you will want the speed, period. Wake up verizon No FIOS, then faster DSL. I would go back to DSL in a heartbeat if they offered the 7.1 MB here but I doubt they ever will. |

1 edit | reply to ddg4005 the biggest problem is that dsl has too many limitations to qualify for the service. No mater what happens cable will beat dsl hands down. because there is no distance limitations at all with cable. As long as you have access to the lines you are good to go. |

If push come to shove they could always take a step back and do fiber to the node and then ultra high speed DSL for the 'last yard' rather than 'last mile'. They do have options.

| Not cost effective in the long run.
The real goal with Fios is to sell the TV portion of it. That's where the real revenue stream is.
Running fiber to the node would be short sighted, and would run Verizon straight into bankruptcy. By the time they invested the money into all that FTTN and copper interface, they would still be stuck with eventually running FTTP.
Verizon's best bet is to continue on as they are now. Deploy as much FiOS as they can, and get as many TV customers as they can.
The bottom line is nothing can grow forever. Companies, the economy, incomes. All are subject to eventually corrections and contractions.
Verizon, and the shareholders (that's the shareholders of all companies mind you) are going to have to realize that the days of never ending rising profits are over.
People really have lost sight of the fact that these corrections in the business cycle are a natural progression of the economy as a whole and are sometimes necessary.
For too long now, we've propped up bubble after bubble (Dot com, housing, commodities) and the whole thing has gotten out of hand.
We've been due for a couple down years. In the same way a naturally ignited forest fire clears the dead timber from the forest floor, a down economy flushes out the poorly run businesses. The well run businesses emerge on the other side lean, mean and ready to compete.
The poorly run businesses die. -- Petty people are disproportionably corrupted by petty power

Well, my DSL and phone line have been flakey for a month now, and VERIZON is being difficult on the issue, citing "you should goto FIOS, as copper/DSL are old technology, and are being phased out". They left a "FIOS Is Here" package 3 times in the past 2 weeks, which I tossed. |

They're still a publicly traded company and have to provide a good ROI, otherwise their shares will be toast. |

| Why I Left Verizon
I recently switched ISP's from Verizon to NYConnect (which I am very happy with so far.)
The reason was because I had been paying 29.99 a month for Verizon's old 768Kbps DSL plan. When I saw the new prices and that I could be getting 3MBps for the same price, I called and asked why I was paying the same amount for less.
I was told that the new price only applied for new customers and if I wanted it I would have to disconnect my service and reapply, creating a week or so of downtime. I told them that made no sense from a business perspective, because it would be easier for me to disconnect and find a NEW ISP, with some overlap, so I had no actual downtime. They just said that "that was my choice."
So, now I am getting 1.5Mbps from NYConnect for the same price that got me half the speed from Verizon, simply because they chose to value finding new customers over their existing ones. Great job, Verizon. |

I feel Verizon mistake not offering an VDSL option for areas not service by FIOS. As it stand it doe not make sense for me to pay for just 3.0Mbps when I can get 12Mbps form Comcast. DSL is not competitive with cable. |

Sounds like you're over 15k feet from the CO, good luck, if you're closer you should be able to get 3mb at least |

| Great news.....for some
As a triple play customer with DirecTV, I would hope they would extend the offer to existing customers, otherwise it really isn't worth staying since all I can get is 3 Mbps, and there seems to be no intention of boosting speeds here. When I signed up a year ago, they told me the faster tier should be available in March. And FiOS is not on the horizon, as this part of the state is not really being addressed except for the county seat that they have to do. |

Why would running fiber to the node bankrupt VZ but not FIOS (I'm not trying to be sarcastic or snide, I'm actually curious)? If the ultimate goal is FTTP, can it be done in two phases, with the first being FTTN and the second extending FTTN to the home? |

This is why cable is better. None of the distance problem. I'm stuck with 1.5mb and Verizon isn't about to put a remote terminal in around here. And the distance isn't going to be extended apparently.
My problem is that I'm stuck with dsl. I live in a trailer park that provides us with cable. |
