[Security] [data storage] off the MBPr thunderbolt drive

So I am interested in a MBPr.

Yet one thing that I've always disliked is the idea of storing my data within the same partition as the OS.

Of course, this is default behavior for Windowz too. How Sloppy!

Has anyone configured their Mac-any-kind to an alternate data location than the default?

Perhaps on an external drive even?

Lately, my iMac 27" (mid-2010) has been sluggish with lots of spinning beach balls. Here are the results of Disk Utility and a trial version of SMART Utility. Which one should I trust?

[OS X] iTunes issue on iMac

I just acquired myself an iMac today, and I'm getting settled in to using it. I'm very new to mac os but quickly learning.

I'm having performance issues with iTunes. Once I open it, the computer is extremely sluggish and keeps freezing up. I have to wait to be able to click on things. If I close iTunes, everything works flawlessly. Is this normal? Is something being setup in the background since I'm just setting it up? I've been dealing with this for a few hours, so whatever is happening should be done with by now.

I opened Activity Monitor, and for the iTunes process, the CPU% is 0, Threads is 17, Real Mem is 62.4mb.

[OS X] Preview/PDF - optimize for web

Does anyone know how to configure Preview to make web-optimized PDFs (similar to how Acrobat can do) ? What I am referring to is an option for viewing PDFs on the web or in your web browser where it loads the PDF as it continues downloading the entire file in the background. What happens now (maybe this is the fault of Chrome's native PDF viewer !) is that when I click the link to a PDF I've uploaded, it waits and waits and waits until the entire file is downloaded before it displays it. I want page 1, page 2, and so on to be viewable as they're done downloading.

In Acrobat, there's actually a checkbox to make them web-optimized or not.

Intersting Article

Someone may have posted this a while ago, but I thought it was a rather good discussion about Apple and marketing.

http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20121026-apples-fashionable-seduction

The most interesting thoughts were this:

"As the author (and fellow BBC Future columnist) Matt Novak noted on Twitter when Apple introduced its fourth generation iPad on Tuesday: “the real story here is that Apple shortened its planned obsolescence cycle to 6 months.” Aiming to achieve a revolutionary technical breakthrough several times a year is an impossible business plan. Fuelling a frenzy of public feeling at the same interval, however, is eminently possible.

Hence the heady ecstasy of the modern product launch – and the fact that the best generator of technological profit margins in 2012 isn’t features or value for money, but the very fact that there is another model out there which is newer and different. It is an emotional experience that money most certainly can buy.

It’s also a seductive, dangerous game to play. Can one company continue to dominate perceptions of quality, cool and desire? Microsoft, Samsung, Google and many others are betting not. Will consumers continue to buy into shorter lifespans and incremental changes to products? Only time will tell."

With the advent of lightning and sealed systems, these are very relevant today I think.

[iPhone] IOS 7 beta 1 - impressions and questions

Well - afer playing for a total of 5 minutes on an old IP4, I upgraded my primary IP5 to IOS 7 (yes I have a valid dev account :) )

So far - ALL of my apps work fine, mail, exchange sync, calendars, etc - everything works well.

GUI is awesome I love it. I love the animations and new gestures. I really like the 3d effects your desktop image shows when you move the phone!!!!

I do have a question - for anyone who is using the beta...

As you can see from the attached photo, folder backgrounds are this ugly grey with little transparency. Does anyone know if this is configurable??

handme down phone

Have a question.

I have a iPhone 5 and I pay out the ass for bare minimum service with Verizon.

If a 5S comes out, what if I wanted to get a 5S and make that my phone and hand down the 5? I would then put those both on the same plan.

Just pop the sim out?

Disable access or view to network shares

Hi Guys,

I have Mac OS X 10.6.7 running on a Dell Mini.

If I go under network I can see my WDTV hub and my WHS machine.

Is there an option to delete them or disable access to them?

What I want is to click on network and not show any devices.

I have a family member who will be using my Dell with the MAC OS and don't want them poking around.

I would prefer not to have to change permission of the windows side.

Thanks

[iPhone] ios 7 beta bug and fix?

I have a friend who downloaded ios 7 beta. I strongly warned him not to, but he did not heed my advice, and he may need to suffer the consequences of doing so. That being said, his iMessage and Facetime do not work. They will not activate. I have looked for fixes, but have not really found one, other than reverting the phone to ios 6... I don't know that he even can do that without wiping the phone because his iTunes may have synched with the ios 7 version. I don't know how to tell that, however. Any ideas?

[iPhone] Lightning cable observation

With the older, 30-pin connector cables, there would be an Apple symbol on the USB plug of a factory cable (to distinguish it from after-market copies). I see that the Lightning cable assembly does not have the factory identification (at least the cable that was supplied with my iPhone5 doesn't have it), making it more difficult to identify genuine cables.

Java suggested install pop up

I read (but never really understand) that Java is (or can be) a security vulnerability, so I followed suggestions a few months ago and removed it. There was only one web page that used it (wsj.com crossword puzzle) and I decided not to bother with the puzzle
Lately I've been getting the above image and have been clicking Not Now. I'm not sure if a particular web site needs them (I just got it at iCloud.com) or if the pop ups are sporadic?
Is there any way to suppress this pop up? Is installing Apple's Java safe (again, I really don't understand it) or should I leave it uninstalled and just delete the pop ups?
Thanks!

Preview (in Mission Control) shows opened thumbnails

In Preview, all my windows are closed, I don't have any open files. However, when I go to Mission Control (there are two options, one to see all open apps and one to see all open windows within the app, it's the latter that I'm referring to), I see thumbnails for 10 formerly opened files.
I asked this question a few years ago and got the answer, but I couldn't find the post, so I'll ask again...how do I get rid of all the open thumbnails.
I've rebooted, repaired permissions, quit the app, etc.
Thanks!

Google Maps app how to get contacts to show first in search?

I followed the instructions to add caldav to iPhone and now I can search my contacts with Google Maps. Is there any way to set a priority for the search order.
For example, if my contact has a popular name, for example Tom Smith, as I type the name in the Maps app search box, the first bunch of results are Tom Smiths from Google searching (photographers, musicians, etc.).
Only after scrolling down will I find my contact's address.
Is there any way to force it to look for my contacts before doing a Google search? (Google contacts are my default)
Thanks!
