Frontier buying Verizon access lines in several states

Frontier buying Verizon access lines in several states

Frontier Communications to Acquire Verizon Assets Creating Nation’s Largest Pure Rural Communications Services Provider

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20090513005561&newsLang=en

"Frontier will acquire Verizon access lines in Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Frontier currently provides phone, video, Internet and broadband services to more than 2 million customers in 24 states, including 11 of the states that are part of the agreement announced today. The Verizon properties include approximately 4.8 million access lines, with 1.0 million High-Speed Internet customers, 2.2 million long-distance customers, 164,000 DirecTV customers and 69,000 FiOS video customers."

(I know this was also covered on the DSLReports news page, but this link gives some additional details).

Wonder how this will impact DSL users in the affected states?

I want to upgrade my DSL but VZ says there is no DSL ?!?!

How can I find out if I should be able to upgrade my 3Mb DSL to 7 Mb service here in Maryland?

When I check online, or call Verizon, after entering my address they report that "DSL is not available in my area". However, I currently HAVE DSL from Verizon. This baffles them. I've been down this road before and finally figured it out. Here's the real story: The real issue is that there are no available ports in our area RT/DSLAM. So, service is available in the area, they're just "sold out" of ports at my RT and they haven't added ports in several years. (Too busy building FIOS elsewhere) :p Since their computer reports that "DSL is not available" their unable to look further to see if any upgrade options exist. Technically, if I asked to downgrade to 768 service, they're not sure they could do it. Stupid, but true.

...so how can I find out if I can "upgrade" my existing service tier when they don't think I can order anything in the first place.

Do my stats below even meet the requirements?

System slow tonight?

It seems my desktop and notebook are both very slow tonight trying to view pages.
Anyone else having similar problem? I'm in Queens, NY.
I am even find it hard to get into SpeakEasy.
My DSL is 768kb, but as I said, everything is loading very slowly.
Could it just be a slowdown on the Internet. I did get through to the SpeakEasy before and it was showing about 300kb.
It states "Preparing download test" and then it just sticks there for a while and then slowly shows 227 kbps! Upload shows 273 kbps.
Does anyone know what is going on?

Just received the best news ever from Verizon!

It appears I won't have to settle for HughesNet afterall. I got home late last night and checked my mail to find a letter from Verizon stating that DSL will be available in our area on a first come first serve basis within the next 30 days. I damn near flipped out. I can't begin to tell you how long I've waited to get this letter from Verizon.

It said to call to reserve our line so I did and the message said they will get back to us as soon as the service is ready to roll out. Packages start at $18.00 a month with 1 mbps, $29.99 for 3 mbps and so on. I got my first PC in '98 so I guess you could say I've been waiting for legitimate line-based high speed broadband for almost 12 years. If folks like us are finally getting DSL then I know it can't be long for the rest of my fellow rural friends.

We live out in the sticks and I do mean sticks. If you walk through our backwoods long enough you'll stumble across Jason's shack from Friday The 13th part 2. Seriously though, hang in there folks. Satellite and wireless won't be the end of the road forever. :)

How to get rid of Verizon?

I have had it with Verizon, and want to get rid of it. But everytime I called, I'm told "We're closed." I was told that I could do this online (24/7). But when I try that I get a login error message:

"We are unable to process your request at this time.
We apologize for any inconvenience. Please try again later."

What is going on here? This is the third time I called to cancel with no one picking up. I feel like big V is giving me the "George Costanza routine".

[speed/latency] Slow Speeds/Bad Connection

I currently have Verizon DSL currently, but the speeds are horribly slow (around 1/4 of what I'm actually paying for and only a little better than dial up). Additionally, in windy, rainy or snowy weather, our connection often drops. I've called Verizon and they had someone come out and look at our lines. They claimed our house was pretty much at the end of their line so our connection was the best it'd ever get. I live on a street with only a few houses so it's not profitable for Comcast to run lines, and the same is true for Fios. I've looked into mobile broadband and satellite, but the bandwidth limits kind of make me nervous because I do watch tv online and things like that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks ;)
