verizon showed up at my door univited

A person showed up at my apt door today (Saturday at 6PM!) claiming to be from Verizon in regards to an upgrading of equipment for my DSL service. I had not requested any change in service but they said that all customers had been notified that a tech would be coming out with the change in equipment. I told them I would not buzz them in my bldg because I thought they were bogus. They insisted that I will have to deal with them and said they would return on a weekday next week. Has anyone heard anything about this? I haven't received anything about this in my billing statements, my email or on my land phone which is with Verizon.

While we recommend the Verizon Internet Security Suite, you may decide to select another online security solution.

Before installing any third-party security software, remember to follow these important safety tips:

Make sure it includes anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, and fraud protection.
Beware of "free" security software programs, especially those promoted through pop-up messages.
Only download software from known, trustworthy sources.
Always verify a web address before downloading.
It is critical that you take action no later than December 08, 2008. After this date, your computer will no longer be protected from viruses, spyware, and ID theft. We urge you to take action as soon as possible to help ensure a safe and secure experience online for you and your family.

[speed/latency] Lagging in games / disconnected

Recently, my online games have started to become really laggy. It started around monday night, 11pm-3am into tuesday morning. I would hit some extreme lag spikes playing world of warcraft. I dont think its the game, iv asked an no one else was experiencing lag. I was wondering if you could tell me if verizon in my area (Georgetown Texas 78633) is doing something to cause this. I know they are widening the road im off of, and with that the telephone lines are being moved out around 6-10 feet. I did have a problem like this recently about 2 months back where my connection was doing the exact same thing, but it was related to the margin, which was under 6 or so. Right now it is at 12/19 but im still experiencing alot of lag spikes. Dunno if this speed test helps

Not lagging right now line test, I will do one when I see it lagging again. http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2455272

Couple of lag spikes in the past few minutes http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2455292

Modem is GT703-WG Verizon

VPI: 0
VCI: 35
DSL Mode Setting: MMODE
DSL Negotiated Mode: G.DMT
Connection Status: Showtime
Speed (down/up): 1792/448 Kbps
ATM QoS class: UBR
Near End CRC Errors : 0/0
Far End CRC Errors : 4/0
Near End CRC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Far End CRC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Near End RS FEC : 0/0
Far End RS FEC : 1140/0
Near End FEC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Far End FEC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Discarded Packets(Within last 30 mins): 0
SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream): 10/19
Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 55/31

Right now, im at 619 latency in game, no one else is experiencing lag spikes but me.

I did do a google search on latency problems with verizon, I came on another dslreports thread.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14136553

Im using vista, so from what iv read, it cant be tweeked.

192.168.1.1/transtat.htm when I click this, it gives me a 404 error so I cant post it im guessing.

Also read this in that thread "Ever consider.... they might be right?

Do this:

close all programs.
terminate all applications running in your taskbar.
open up your task manager (if you have 2000 or XP).
watch your performance-- specifically CPU usage.

without moving your mouse (yes, on some systems that will spike CPU usage sadly enough) watch the CPU usage. If it's spiking high (or running at a constant level above 2-3% max) then you may have malicious programs running such as viruses (virii?) and/or spyware."

I had my game up and running, hit a lag spike and I saw the spike on the CPU usage graph, very noticeable, went up from like 60% to 100% twice in 2 seconds which is when I experienced the lag in game, but then it hung up after that which wasnt registering on the graph. Im not sure why that happaned, maybe internet lag and my computer catching up to it? I don't know, any help would be appricated.

[speed/latency] 3mb Verizon DSL super slow....

Up until a few days ago I had great download speeds, about 2700kbps, but now I'm barely getting 270kbps. I tested it on my laptop and PS3 and both are the same. I don't know if this is temporary or what and I'm not good at this stuff so I don't know if it is something I can fix. I don't know how to interpret my line test but here it is http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2456425. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks in advance for you help. Oh and it's not traffic because it's like this all day no matter the time.

[billing] Price Hike in NYC?

I was surprised to see that my Verizon Online bill was $2 higher this month. I was not notified of this in advance. Nor have I ever been offered any sort of contract.

Is this the usual method? Aren't companies required to tell you when the price goes up ahead of the rate hike?

Browsers do not reflect rated upload speed

Hi,

I recently upgraded my DSL service from 768kps/128kps to the new 1 Mbps/384kps service.

According to Verizon's Online Speed test and other speed tests, my rated speeds are very close to what I was provisioned.

What I have noticed is that whenever I download a file to my PC using either FF, IE, or Opera browsers, the file download speed indicated by each browsers download manager never exceeds 128 kbps like I was rated before.

Has anyone experienced the same and have a recommendation? My webpages load very quickly in each browser while surfing but I am stumped as to why the file upload speed never approaches 384Kbps.

   Suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Westell router - drops DSL when system time is set.

Hello. I am experiencing many Verizon DSL drops per day. I have the older Westell Gateway router, model A90-327W15-06. The System log shows the following, repeated many times over the course of the day:

TUE NOV 11 16:04:23 2008
    WanMgr reports DSL is UP

TUE NOV 11 16:04:05 2008
    WanMgr reports DSL is Down

TUE NOV 11 15:47:54 2008
Setting System clock to Local time TUE NOV 11 15:47:54 2008

According to the log, every drop is preceded by a setting of the system clock. I called Verizon (4 times now) and they said a new router would fix it. I am feeling a little skeptical about that. What do you guys think? Thank You!

[billing] What are your thoughts on this billing policy change

Received this from Verizon a few weeks ago.
----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Valued Customer:

Thank you for participating in Verizon's automatic payment plan by having your bill charged to credit card on a recurring basis for Verizon Online account.

This email is sent to advise you of a change in the Terms and Conditions agreed upon when you enrolled in the Recurring Credit Card payment option.

Beginning November 16, 2008, payments will be charged to your credit card 12 calendar days after the bill date. This is a change to the current process of charging your credit card the same day as your bill date.

If you understand and agree to the change in charge date as stated above, there is nothing more you need to do; your bill will continue to be charged to your credit card account each month. If you do not wish to agree to the change, you may de-enroll from the recurring credit card payment option by logging onto https://sso.verizon.net/ssowebapp/VOLPortalLogin

Since this is an update to the Terms and Conditions, please retain a copy of this email for your records.

For questions about your account, please contact the Verizon Customer Support Center at http://verizon.net/contactus.

We hope you enjoy the conveniences of being a verizon.com member and saving checks, stamps and time by paying your Verizon bill automatically.

Sincerely,
Verizon

Just wondering if anyone has any idea why they try to make things confusing.
This seems a little odd to me since most businesses want their money as soon as possible.

Westell 7500: Disabling Access to Admin UI from Wireless:

While the Westell 7500 I received for one of my customers supports disabling remote access to the admin UI from the 'outside', there are no obvious provisions for blocking access to the UI from the ethernet ports or, more importantly, the wireless access point. To me, this is a serious deficiency.

If it were a straight iptables problem, I could have done it easily, but I cannot find any docs on the interface definitions or how the predefined tables are set up. It appears that Verizon has added a bunch of default rules on top of what is in the Westell source code package.

Is there an approved solution for this, or is there a document describing the 'base' iptables setup?
