[Home Network] Connect On Command or Keep Alive for 2210 / BEFSR

I'm about to install a new Linksys BEFSR41 router behind my Netopia 2210-02-1006 modem, I need multiple internet sessions. I've read the FAQ's and understand the Keep Alive = 180 seconds recommendation. What issues (if any) does using the Connect On Demand feature cause? Sometimes I prefer to use my system(s) without an active internet connection. If I understand the BEFSR41 manual correctly I could to this if Connect On Demand is utilized. TIA for any information and / or opinions.

[Speed Problem] Slow DSL Down Rates at Night

I have been a very satisfied Bellsouth DSL customer for several years. However the last few months that has been changing. It started with a 5 day outage in the spring, that I got a constant run-around from customer support. Things have been mostly fine since then except for the last month.

I started noticing slow download times a few weeks ago. I started doing numerous speed tests on AT&T test page, speakeasy.com and speedtest.net. My 3mb connection was now averaging 1.2mb only. I called support, they did some tests, and could find nothing wrong. A tech was dispatched and of course when they arrived the next morning everything was fine and running at the full 3mb.

Things were fine for about a week, I then upgraded to the 6mb service last weekend. New speeds came through as expected and I was averaging 4.8-5.2 downloads. Last few days though the evening speeds have been dropping back to 1.2ish only. Support recommended I upgrade from my old Westell that I've had for a few years. Yesterday afternoon, my 2Wire Modem/Gateway arrived. Installed and setup with no problem and was getting a full 6mb download. Last night however, speeds were right back down to 1.2mb. Throughout all of this however my upload speeds have always been maxed out where they should be, so it is just the down pipe that seems to have the problem.

I suspect there is a capacity problem or line problem somewhere since it is fine at times and horrible in the evenings. Any recommendations as to how to bring this up with their support members?

Why is Static IP no longer "free" with Extreme 3 or 6?

I'm grandfathered in, but apparently if I move, or make any changes to my account I will have to pay $14.95 to keep my static IP.

I'm just wondering why this business decision was made. Do static IPs require extra overhead? Is it just a plain ol' money grab? Static IP addresses are so convenient. I've had the same one since 2004; I can configure remote firewalls to allow my address, always find my home server without having to use other services, and so on.

This was such a great perk for the Extreme DSL tiers, and now it's gone? AT&T fail. Why?

Unwanted Static IP

I noticed recently that my IP address seems to be static suddenly. It used to be that I could change it by fiddling with my mac address and the usual methods. Now no matter what I change I am issued the same IP address every time I connect. Anyone else in central Florida experience this recently?

[Services] Wiring 2nd line jacks back into primary NID

The previous owners of our home had 2 lines, I'll assume 1 for business. As usual, AT&T wants to charge us for getting those jacks wired back in. I don't mind paying, but would rather not fork over $85 for a job that would probably take all of 10 minutes. Here are some pics of the NID and another 'splice' box (don't know exactly what to call it). As you can see in that picture, some of the wires aren't spliced in. I'm assuming these are the wires I need to get the other 2 jacks working. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

DSLR NYC Line Monitor

What the heck happened to the DSLR NYC line monitor server on Monday morning. It went offline for about two hours, and when it came back there was in increase of ~20 ms in the average ping times. Did the server get physically relocated by a few hundred miles, or is this a temporary routing problem?

Here is my traceroute to the server:

The ~20 ms increase seems to be happening during the hand-off to oneandone.net. Netcraft says that the oneandone.net server has been in use since Nov 2006, but the transit times sure make it look as if it is no longer anywhere near NYC. The rDNS hostnames associated with some of the hops are a bit strange, but I can't believe that the pseudo city/airport names hinted at are accurate (there is no way it is being routed through Lhasa). OTOH, onlinehome-server.com appears to be a hosting service in Chesterbrook, PA which might explain the extra packet travel time (especially if the packets actually are routed first to NYC, then to Chicago, then to Kansas City, and eventually to Chesterbrook, PA).

This may not be the appropriate forum for this thread, but when I first saw the increase in transit time from NYC in my DSLR/AT&T line monitor, my first thought was *!@# AT&T has screwed up the routing, and this is where I started making the post.

Atlanta 6MB DSL at 291kpbs down?! WTF?!

I've been sync'd at 7136 for over a year with no issues. They put me on interleave to remedy some problems and it worked great. I have been having latency issues the past few days so I started investigating.

I called support (always a nightmare) and they did absolutely nothing for connection speed. In fact, they removed the interleave from the modem and I'm not sure what kind of problems that's going to cause. As it stands I am still getting 250-400kbps down/400-512 up MAX out of my 6MB line.

Is there any local place I can call and talk to an American about the problem?

Is it possible that the crappy Motorola 2200 is trashed? I still sync and get green lights all the way across.. just crap for download rates.
