Video Card Advice

Black Friday is here so time to take advantage of upgrade opportunities

I found I am about a video card short of having enough left over parts to put together another E8400 system. This one will do very little gaming, probably more picture editing and video playing than anything.

Have another, couple of year old, system that does significant gaming time, mostly driving sims, medieval battles, FPS almost all running from steam, this system is win7/64, E8400 cpu , Asus P5Q Pro motherboard, BFG 8800GT/512, corsair 520W, 4G, monitor is a 19" LCD running at 1440 X 900.

There is an opportunity to upgrade the BFG8800 in this system and re-use the 8800 with the kit of parts.

So here are some candidate video cards to replace the 8800GT:

ASUS EAH4670/DI/512MD3 Radeon HD 4670 512MB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Retail
Price:$74.99 Price after Rebate:$54.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121329&cm_re=EAH4670-_-14-121-329-_-Product

BFG Tech BFGE98512GTGE GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
Price:$109.99 Price after Rebate:$89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143186&Tpk=BFGE98512GTGE

ASUS EN9800GT/HTDP/512MD3 GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
Price:$109.99 Price after Rebate:$89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121300&cm_re=EN9800GT-_-14-121-300-_-Product

ASUS ENGTS250/DI/512MD3 GeForce GTS 250 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
Price:$129.99 Price after Rebate:$109.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121334&cm_re=ENGTS250-_-14-121-334-_-Product

Is it worth the effort to upgrade from the 8800GT. It looks like you can keep moving a bit up the performance curve by adding $20 at any price point, but that performance really falls off below the $90 for the 9800GTs. Where is the most bang for the buck here? Is a GTS250 overkill for a two year old build? Anyone think a swap from nvidia to ATI under windows 7 or with steam would rule out ATI cards?

A monitor upgrade on the second system could also happen if the right deal shows up on Friday.

And does any one know why there are so few BFG cards at newegg, are they cutting back as a BFG distributer?

Thanks

DVD-ROM not working?!

I have a Dell XPS 420. It had/has a 750 GB which came with it when shipped. I recently added a 2nd drive, a 1 TB. When I was installing the drive, I noticed that the top DVD-ROM was connected to the RAID Controller which I thought was odd. I plugged the top DVD-ROM into one of the other SATA ports on the motherboard and plugged the 2nd hard drive into the port where the DVD-ROM was.

I booted up and hard drive was found and everything appeared to be working correctly. Fast forward to today when I put a CD into the top DVD-ROM and it will not read it. As I did some searching, it seems the drive isn't being detected.

I only have one other SATA port on my motherboard that I can try. Is there anything else I can try to do? The drive is getting power.

dusty server

Hi,

As my home is kinda dusty, my server tends to collect dust.

For every 2 months, I have to get at least 2 big cans of compressed air duster to remove 80% of dust.

This is a waste of money. I would like to get something powerful but cheap to clean off the dust once awhile.

I am open in all suggestions.

Thanks.

Kindly review my pc build :)

I plan on building a small pc to host windows media center with all my media. It will just sit in my laundry room and only stream WMC content to my xbox. I currently use my xbox as the extender. This would be my first build.

My Build

ZOTAC IONITX-A-U Atom N330 1.6GHz Dual-Core Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo

Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Dual Channel Kit Memory

ROSEWILL RC-CIX-01 BK Glossy Black Steel Mini-ITX Cube Computer Case

2x 1TB seagate hard drives

The only negative thing I hear is that Atom has problem with flash video. since I will only be streaming WMC to my xbox I dont think thats a problem.

I like the Atom because I want something running with minimal power.

Any opinions or suggestions would be welcome.

Motherboard - installing CPU, cooler, RAM

How do you guys install CPU, CPU cooler and RAM in the motherboard?

Before putting the motherboard in the case or after putting the motherboard in the case?

I've always installed these things first and then put the motherboard in the case but lately I've been seeing that people do it after putting the mobo in place.

There is a nice video of that here but, of course, there's plenty of room in that case for installing everything without cutting your fingers :)

P4 HT or Core 2?

Looking to get a bit more performance without spending 2K.

At the moment I have a P-4 2.8 GHz W/Hyper-threading socket 775 800Mhz FSB and 4 Gb DDR2. The board will support a 3.0 GHz core2 duo 1066 FSB and 3Mbs L2

With my astro photography I can be working with 20+ 25Mb images at a time. Would the Core 2 Duo processor make a noticeable difference in performance?

(EDIT)-- to add the Hyper-Threading

How do you know which PSU to choose?

Current I have in mind about buying the GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD4P. On the pictures I can see it uses a 24 pin motherboard plug and an 8 pin CPU plug(link to picture is provided at the bottom). Now my question is can I use this PSU to power this motherboard? hec X-Power Pro 650 650W Continuous @ 40°C ATX 12V v2.2. It's specs are:
1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)
1 x EPS 12V(8Pin)
4 x peripheral
3 x SATA
1 x Floppy
2 x Pin PCI-E
First off what in the hell is 20+4Pin? And can you please tell me if this will work with my motherboard? I don't see any other 4 pin slots lying around on the motherboard.
Here is the picture of the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=13-128-400-TS&SpinSet=13-128-400-SS&ISList=13-128-400-Z01%2c13-128-400-Z02%2c13-128-400-Z03%2c13-128-400-Z04%2c13-128-400-Z05%2c13-128-400-Z06%2c13-128-400-Z07%2c13-128-400-Z08%2c13-128-400-Z09%2c13-128-400-Z10%2c13-128-400-Z11&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16813128400&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=GIGABYTE%20GA-P55-UD4P%20LGA%201156%20Intel%20P55%20ATX%20Intel%20Motherboard
