Mystery Component, Part Deux

OK, the "Mystery Component" LED protector arrived today. As soon as I opened the box and looked at it, I said "Hmmm....resistor". I took it home, and snapped the first pic of it, and then measured it on my Fluke 87. yep...98.6 Ohms! Cut the heat-shrink off, and yep, it's a 1/2 Watt, 100 Ohm carbon film resistor.

Upgraded to Extra

I studied diligently for a month using the Gordon West Extra Class book and audio CDs and then flash cards at http://www.kb0mga.net/exams/index.php and Friday night I passed the Extra exam with flying colors. It felt good to go into the exam confident and still be confident when handing the exam to the VE’s for grading.

The VE’s are from the Bergen Amateur Radio Association (BARA) club which I’m a member of. It was nice when they took the exam, put the answer sheet overlay on my test and I heard them say “This will be an easy one to grade”. They all congratulated me and I thanked them each for all the info and encouragement and their enthusiasm that is making the hobby exciting and fun. The Bergen Amateur Radio Association (BARA) in Northern NJ is a tremendous group of folks that make a terrific hobby even that much better.

So I can now breathe a little sigh of relief and relax by cruising the extra class portion of the bands. I left shortly after they handed me my CSCE because my daughter was getting her first Varsity letter as a freshman and I wanted to get there in time for that. So it was a very rewarding day.

When I left, there were 3 other folks testing and I think 2 of them just passed their tech and the 3rd was finishing up his upgrade to general and I hope he passed as well.

Now, to learn CW ;-)

APRS question

I've been reading about this I kind of have the gist of it by providing your location to the station.. However how much is it used? Is it worth getting a radio with the feature or not?

Identify the hidden component? :)

I figured this was the best spot to ask this one, we all know more about components than the other forums would. :)

In my travels across the interweb, I have found something that I cannot explain to myself how it works, and its bugging the hell out of me. And, of course, the "store" wont tell me jack. :uhh:

http://autolumination.com/equalizers.htm

About halfway down the page, the "LED Protector" is what I'm curious about. What component(s) could be hidden under that shrink wrap?

Its been a long time since I thought about anything component wise... and the fluorescent flicker in the office is only adding to my headache this afternoon. :)

I'm basically trying to understand what is in there, so I can figure out how it is supposed to magically protect your aftermarket automotive led assemblies??

Choosing a toroid core

Since my shack and my living room/home theater share the same room I have one issue for some time now. Any 2m signal I transmit gets into my amplified sub woofer for the home theater, and since 140Mhz is a signal its designed to pass and amplify it does.

I have narrowed down the issue to the RCA cable that feeds to sub as when it is unplugged I dont hear the signal in the sub. I have tried several different configurations of routing the cable, coiling the cable and creating 'bowtie' shaped coils in the longer straight runs to eliminate inductance on the straight portions of the cable. None of this has made an appreciable difference.

So it seems like some sort of ferrite or toroid core may be needed to keep the RF out. My question is how do you go about choosing the right one for the frequency im having trouble with?

Need base station HF transceiver advice.

Having my General in the ULS I would like to get my hands on a HF transceiver hopefully around the beginning next year budget providing.

I will admit I know Jack about the quality of HF transceivers other then Harris who makes some really nice units but are so far over my level of finance they are not even dreamable.

So what I am looking for is:

Application will be a stationary base unit not mobile.

Working price $300 - $350 and used is a word I prefer if I can get more bang for my buck.

Input power should be 12 volt DC and or 120/12 volt AC/DC and BTW 12 volt DC is mandatory.

As for output power most seem to be 100 watts however I desire the ability to reduce that to the level required to communicate not saturate as in being an 11 meter kinda guy so stepped power reduction would be way up there on the selection chart. ;-)

Modes I will take as many as I can get.

Advice pitfalls and or junk to avoid plus any other thoughts would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Wayne

Comcast blocking arrl.net forwarding

Not sure if this should go here or the Comcast forum, but I figured the people most likely to be interested are hanging out here.

According to the ARRL article linked below, Comcast is blocking traffic to comcast.net e-mail addresses originating from the arrl.net e-mail forwarding service. I'm on Comcast but don't use their native e-mail service. I do have my arrl.net email forwarded to my gmail account, however, and those emails are also not coming through (just tested it a few minutes ago).
