DOCSIS cable modem drops signal fully about 50% of the time

I signed up for Grande Internet in Austin, TX about 6 weeks ago. The internet was fast, customer service has been friendly. I got the Double Play with 60/5 Mbps internet, and when it's on, I do get 60Mbps.

However, 2 weeks ago, cable modem started dropping signal for 30 minutes to 5 hours at a time. It was either full signal or "searching for signal" light flashing. Cisco DOCSIS Cable Model channel status screen would show all 8 channels as powered up when working; then all at 0 s/n ratio (except one, though setting it to that channel didn't change anything).

They sent out a tech. First guy replaced some wiring. Second guy replaced a jack. Third guy did something else.

I believe the second tech said something about "a lot of frequency [crosstalk/noise/something] is building up on the line and feeding back into the modem, causing it to drop the signal"; he'd found a cable that was slightly damaged and replaced it. The S/N ratio on the 8 channels went up slightly on the channel status screen, and he called it a day. About an hour later, the connection light was flashing again and the modem was searching for a signal.

The tech that came today kind of waved his arms in the air and said he was taking a shot in the dark, and changed out the cable modem. He said, "you are the only person on this particular node in your neighborhood; it must be new or something, so that's why we wouldn't have gotten any other reports if it's our external hardware that's at fault". Obviously their is a problem with something at that external network point, but they continue to send techs out and will not escalate the issue to have this properly looked at.

My boss is starting to get angry at me leaving work early so I can let the cable guy in... It's beginning to get ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I love this company, but two weeks now without internet is starting to push it. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas on why it could be doing this?

EDIT: Attaching screenshot of Cisco DPC3827 DOCSIS 3.0 screen when connection is "dropped" (last outage was 4PM today until end of day, still no signal). When connection is "on", all channels have power level near 0dBmV and S/N ratio around 41-45db. When off, all channels off except channel 1, but guessing this is some internal behavior as there's nothing coming through.

Please identify these little flies for me

These little buggers have been in my house for a couple of years now. I've tried everything. Insectisides, vinegar traps (doesn't work), fly traps (doesn't work), cleaning everything...

I can't get rid of them, only control the population.

They have red blood, if it helps. They are smaller than the typical noisy house fly, but bigger than fruit flies.

Looking for a new ISP

Honestly, I think this is probably the best place for this thread, if not, please move it to where it would be best appropriate (I still find these forums a bit confusing at times).

Anyways, I am currently in Raleigh, NC. Unfortunately, this area is overrun with TWC. I am really trying to find a way to move away from their services, and just go with straight up internet. Unfortunately, they (from what I know, and have looked up) are the only provider of high-speed internet (speeds that are rated over 10/1) in the area with a reliable connection.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, or who they contract their services from.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have read the reviews, but I was hoping that someone might know of someone or be able to help me out beyond that.

upgrading my security systems

Hello! I’m getting a little paranoid about my neighbourhood because people have been complaining about crimes lately and just a few days ago, someone tried to break into my house! Thank goodness for my current burglar alarm. They probably ran away when the alarm sounded since nothing seems to be stolen from my living room.
Although I feel secure with my burglar alarm, I don’t want to totally rely on it. I’ve heard what desperation does to burglars and they would do anything to get what they want. So I think it’s time to upgrade my security system. What do you guys recommend?

Cat5/5E Connectors

When installing new RJ45 ends on cat 5 or 5e cable,,, is the T568A color code the one to go with,, it seems there are [ for some reason ] two different color codes [ T568A & T568B ], add to that it seems you never use all the conductors in a cat5 or above wire anyway,,,,

I have Cat5 coming in phone Frontier access box on house; The modem has an RJ11 connect point for incoming line, again the modem only has 2 points of contact at it's connection point,, so do you just use 2 wires in RJ11, and cut the rest in the clear, or does the added twisted pairs offer some kind of shielding or other benefit ?

I have a picture that shows this:
Left to right, lock clip down:

Pin 2 Or/WH
Pin 3 Blue
Pin 4 Blue/Wh
Pin 5 Or

Pins 1 and 6 n/c

What matters, and what does not matter,,, ??

Work-around for a disabled clipboard redirection on RDP

Quick question.

Is there any possible way to over-ride, or bypass and allow copy and paste if it is set to disable?

(Short story to explain the question above.)
The company I work for has disabled copy and paste due to another employee's ignorance and now is forcing everyone to work off of the extremely, laggy remote desktop. The job requires a lot of switching back and forth and copy and pasting from several different windows. The only way it was efficient was having these windows in your own computer and not having them opened in the remote desktop.

I have looked at the registry, but I do not have the permissions to edit/add/change anything.

Anyone have any ideas? This change would probably set me back between $5-10/hour so I'm trying to see if there's anyway to get around it.

Thanks a bunch!

Found T-Tapped Modem On My Network (Not Mine)

This is very strange. I own a high end security services company. A client of ours is remodeling his residence and we are providing video monitoring, We had Comcast install a modem at our digital video recorder (DVR) and secured it all in a locked box. Our central Station can look in at the site with Central Management Software if the alarm is activated.

Three days ago we lost our camera feeds and I figured that a construction worker cut something or maybe a cable outage

Our technician finds an ARRIS modem, T-tapped, in ahead of the comcast modem from the D-Mark. It looked well installed and with compression fittings. This job is expected to run for a year or so too.

Could this be a construction worker watching TV or maybe downloading. Or could it be worse as the ARRIS supports cable phone?

Thanks

Ted

Yahoo email forced upgrade (again)

Yahoo is at it again, forcing users to upgrade. I upgraded by mistake and have managed to get back to the classic interface. FYI, changing the resolution to 800x600 did not work.

I used the FF plug-in "User Agent Switcher 0.7.3"; and set it to IE 6; then ran yahoo mail and it suggested I upgrade my browser (which I ignored) and then it went back to the classic (and much faster interface IMHO).

I still wonder how they can say the new interface is better and faster; it simply is not. It is slow, bloated, and clunky.

FYI - these are older but still useful threads if you want more details: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26203739-Can-t-access-Yahoo-Email-unless-I-upgrade-to-new-version

Power Issues with Surge Protectors and Cable/DSL Modems

OK so my question has to do with the use of surge protectors and cable/dsl modems.

My question has to do with the power cord of the modems. Not the coaxial cable going through.

Can a surge protector impede the flow of electricity to the modem to which the modem will end up having an intermittent connection problem?

As far as I have been told modems are sensitive to the flow of electricity that a surge protector can make it so the modem is not receiving the right amount of electricity that will take it as a signal to turn off. But because the modem is getting power it wants to keep turning back on.

This is assuming that all other variables such as signals and cables connected properly.
