How can we afford not to go 100% FTTP/FTTH ..

Thing is, I don't know how Fairpoint could afford not to push FAST technology.

I feel, tomarrows services will belong to the carrier who both offers it all and offers it great (as in reliable).

In general, customers who buy any one given service but has an interest for the other will usually take all of them to get a good package deal.

The reason I say this is cause I can't see why any of these companies wouldn't immediately see the need to go the fiber route. After reading the thread, I think, for instance, AT&T's U-Verse system is one that seems to be problematic and if Fairpoint is just thinking DSL, maybe with DirecTV co-marketing, that combo will likely never compete. Even if there was ever some kind of wireless solution, I can see it as problematic as the fringe area issues plaguing the new digital tv reception.

Ok, maybe it may happen once in a while, maybe it wont be that bad but the real issue is, once cable upgrades its network to full fiber and no one else does, I think they will swipe every customer one by one. Think about it, would you rather pay $95/mo for the best of all services or $85/mo for so so internet speed and chancey, possibly pixelized HDTV on your $3,000 set.

If every customer went to the fiber alternative, that would be it, the other network would theoretically have no customers; so I go back to what I say to begin with. I don't see why companies shouldn't be banging down the doors of fiber manufacturers to build it out yesterday, my feelings anyway.

Fiber being strung in Houlton, ME

I have no idea if this has anything to do with FairPoint or not, but I've been seeing fiber strung all over town here lately, or at least what I believe to be fiber. I plan on getting some pictures to post, and I plan on trying to ask a worker next time I see one.

But anyway, I'm guessing that this doesn't have anything to do with FairPoint, rather a local ISP (which I do know has 'future' plans for fiber) considering all the work is being done by the contractor "On Target". Their website lists their ability to install/repair/splice fiber optics, in addition to copper, but I can't imagine a reason for hanging new copper all over town. I've seen them just about everywhere, and there are wound cables hung on many sections of existing copper/etc that they haven't yet gotten around to finishing, I guess. Haven't quite made it to my neighborhood yet, but they're getting fairly close.

So anyone have any thoughts about this? Might this be FairPoint? I can't imagine in a small town in northern Maine, but who knows. Like I said, I'm going to get some pictures so someone can verify that it is indeed fiber. Should be able to snap a few tomorrow.
