Email updates

Looks like email has been going through a Postini email server since yesterday afternoon. At first, Postini handed off to a dslextreme mailserver but recently I have been seeing Postini to a Google server to dslextreme. Also, although most of the email sent on Wednesday was bottlenecked at the dslextreme mailserver as George said, there were a few emails sent on Wednesday that arrived only today. Examining the headers reveals that the bottleneck was caused by a handoff from one Google server to another Google server. Hopefully this will not be a problem in the future. For those that don't know, Postini has been owned by Google for about a year. Looks like using Google apps involves using the Postini spam filter.

Since the Postini spam filter went into effect yesterday afternoon, I have received zero spam emails instead of the usual 30-40 per day. Apparently these spam emails have simply disappeared. I have no desire to see them so from that perspective this change could be considered a success. All the emails that have made it into my Inbox have been legitimate. However I wonder if any legitimate emails got filtered. I have been critical of dslextreme spam filters in the past since I could see that they were identifying legitimate email as spam even at the lowest setting. So I am a bit skeptical that Postini is perfect in this respect since we apparently have no way of accessing the rejected email (nor do we know what rules Postini is using to make its choices). Several people expressed concerns about this in the other thread without receiving any response from dslextreme.

Misleading Sales Reps @ DSLExtreme

Heres the story:

Clicked to Chat with a sales rep in July about ordering DSL in a ATT Territory in Illinois.

#1 question was If I order 1.5/384 can I upgrade at a later date. Their answer was yes. Ordered and 1.5 was setup and worked.

Fast forward to today:
I find out the line is capable of 6016/768 and ask Billing to upgrade me. They flat out refuse saying Im in ATT TAS Territory whatever that is, the only thing they can offer is 1.5/384. When I question about the Sales Rep telling me I can upgrade the supervisors response was:

Prequalifications do not always tell us what network you are in. It is possible they did not know you were in a TAS area. I apologize for the inconvenience, but unfortunately, there is nothing we can do.

OK so lets revisit the Sales chat. I specifically asked If I could upgrade and was told Yes.

Now I do really wnat a faster internet and yes I just signed up and have 2 of 12 months down however the fact is that the Sales Dept mislead and misrepresented the information and now DSL Extreme wants to collect $200 Service or $250 Early Termination Fee.

I see theres over 122 Complaints against DSLExtreme with the BBB.

Be very weary of ordering service with DSLExtreme. They will lie, cheat and steal your money.

(Follow up) Thanks! & "Is Covad 'Comcasting' me?"

First, I'd like to start with a great big THANK YOU to all of the folks at DSL Extreme. I'm finally up and running smoothly, after numerous snafus earlier this summer.

I know that my setup was a rather lengthy, irritating one (as evidenced by the 40+ calls I was told that I had logged against my account), but I'm pleased that I'm finally up and running. Two days ago, a rep called and confirmed that he could fix the last of my issues (my port speed was incorrectly provisioned at 2 mbit instead of 3mbit). I'm happy to say that I've now got a stable connection with no issues whatsoever. I'm also pleased that I'm paying almost 40% less than I was with Earthlink for a service that's 2x as fast.

So in short: Thank you DSL Extreme. Your techs worked hard and fielded a hell of a lot of calls from me, and I'm very impressed by all the hard work you put in.

Now, rather than creating two new topics, I thought I'd ask my question here: does Covad engage in any sort of deep-packet inspection or traffic manipulation? I know that Comcast got in hot water due to their forging of RST packets, and I was wondering if Covad has been known to do anything similar. I ask because recently I've noticed behavior that seems very similar to such forced interruption.

Whenever I download something from Rapidshare.com (and only from rapidshare.com), I notice that I can only sustain 2.5mbit of throughput for 10-20 seconds, after which my throughput drops to 0, where it stays for a couple seconds. During this time, I can initiate _no_ outbound connections, nor do I receive any inbound packets (DNS requests fail, ICMP packets are lost, etc.) The connection will then be re-established, and my download speeds will climb, only to be dropped shortly thereafter. In some cases, I am able to sustain a transfer without interruption, but only at about 800-1200kbit. Normally I would figure that this is an issue with the server that I'm transferring from -- except in this case, I'm pretty sure it's not. If I tunnel the connection through SSH (via a server of mine elsewhere), I experience no such issue -- no drops, and no reduced throughput (some overhead from SSH, but other than that...) Same server, same download -- the only difference is it's encrypted. This is what got me wondering -- such a difference was a telltale sign of DPI/RST-injection with Comcast, and I can't help but be curious as to why I'm seeing similar behavior.

I'm certainly not accusing Covad/DSL Extreme of pulling any tricks, as I know there are many possible reasons for this (different routing, an errant switch, etc); I was just curious if anyone has heard of Covad doing something that might explain the above behavior.

SMTP server

Hi,
I'm trying using the dslextreme smtp server to send mails with my thunderbird client. However, I would like to put the from address to be from @cal.berkeley.edu domain. Since the berkeley account is just a mail forwarding service, I can't sent it through the berkeley servers.

Currently, I'm getting the error "The server is unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections"

However, when I do the same thing for another account @stanfordalumni.org account, there is no problem.

Is there a way (doesn't have to be a dslextreme solution) to send mail with a from address different than the smtp server domain?

Thanks

Hi George,

I think I may have found a way to show my trouble. It's a particular ip hop 7 on the tracert to my fav game server. the scale on the botton of the graph is the hop numbers. Its constantly bumping up and down making gaming very fustrating. Can you please take my back off the ATT route?
Slow Connection: Switched from ATT

I just switched from ATT to DSL Extreme.

It took a bit of searching but I found out how to finally connect everything back to my network.
But what I did notice is that my speeds are close to half of what I was getting with the same type of plan.

Is there a ramp up period still?

Thanks

[Line Problem] Erratic DSL Performance and Intermittent Noise on

A few months ago I started experiencing a combination of problem symptoms:

-	frequent periods of intermittent hiss, crackles and pops on voice calls on the voice line shared with DSL but not on my primary voice line
-	dslreports.com line monitoring shows frequent periods of packet loss and erratic high latency
-	When I noticed performance degradation (slow refresh of web pages, etc,) I would see occasional high latency and packet loss when pinging from my desktop system through my home router to the gateway IP address.

Disconnecting the DSL line from the DSL modem seems to immediately stop the hiss/crackle/pop on the voice line shared with DSL (I will call it LINE 2).

Usually my DSL line shows good performance. Last week Dslreports.com speed test from my residence in San Jose to Megapath measures 33 ms latency, 4259 Kb/s download speed, and 635 Kb/s upload speed.

Question: is it possible that the Broadmax LinkMax HASA 300A-2 DSL modem is failing and generating noise within the analog frequency range? I don’t have access to another DSL modem to test this hypothesis but I am tempted to buy a replacement.

Configuration:

There are two analog lines to the house. The AT&T DSL service is shared with an analog circuit ( LINE2) which I use for FAX and occasional voice calls.

The shared line is connected to a AT&T-supplied splitter (labeled SPS-SA1-SR1) at the NID. The DSL output is wired directly via a twisted pair CAT5 to the DSL Modem, a Broadmax LinkMax HSA-300A-2.

The DSL Modem is connected to a X86 PC running a Linux-based router (downloadable from www.contribs.org).

My ISP is DSL Extreme.

The analog output from the splitter is wired via a second twisted pair in the same CAT5 cable to a Leviton wiring box patch panel which goes to retrofit wiring (home run, all CAT5) and back to the NID where it connects to the original analog phone wiring.

As a result of the problems, I wired the analog line LINE 2 from the splitter in the NID through a Leviton DSL splitter in the Leviton wiring box with nothing connected to the Leviton filter DSL output. I was hoping that the two in-series splitters/filters would reduce the noise on voice calls, but I have not noticed any change to the LINE 2 noise or DSL performance, other than an attenuation of the LINE 2 dial tone loudness, which used to be louder than my primary voice line to about the same level as the primary voice line dial tone.

Finally, I added a DSL filter at the wall jack in the room where the LINE2 voice line is used. This means two splitters and one filter in series does not stop the intermittent hiss/crackle/pop.

Dsl down during peak hours - flakka

[Mod note: Split from http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20994126-Dsl-down-during-peak-hours . sash]

said by uid://742598 :yomero & flakka -

When you lose your connection what is the status of the DSL or WAN light on the modem? The DSL light goes out and stays off until it decides to go back on again.

said by uid://742598 :Does it begin to flash? What type of modem are you using?Nope, just turns off. The LAN light is on, but no internet, no staus light as well. It's the D-Link 2320B you guys supply. Fairly new I might add. I haven't had it for more than 7 months.

said by uid://742598 :What what you are describing, you are in fact losing sync on the modem. A loss of sync wouldn't indicate a problem within our network like and overloaded router but rather an issue between the DSL modem and the phone companies central office. Typically when it occurs at the same time everyday it is because something that is on during that time frame is causing interference and causing your modem to lose sync. That can include things like a halogen lamp, dimmer switch, street light. I have also seen people sprinklers come on and get the MPOE wet which causes the line to lose sync. We've (AT&T & I) have tried everything we possibly can to figure it out. Again, this doesn't explain why it's happening when I was with a different ISP. It only happened when I switched to you guys.

said by uid://742598 :How long is the phone line between the modem and wall jack? 8 Feet.

said by uid://742598 :Have you tried a different phone cable? How many phones do you have in the house? Yes, I've tried four other cables. Still the same thing. I have one phone in the house, and it's the same one the DSL line is on. I have a brand-spanking new phone line coming in from the telephone pole that AT&T replaced as well.

said by uid://742598 :Do all of the phone have filters on them? Yes, it's filtered. And I've tried many of them as I previously mentioned.

said by uid://742598 :Can you try to unplug all of the phones during that time and see if the service comes back? Already tried that, chief. It only comes back when it decides to. I could be at it's mercy for hours at times.

said by uid://742598 :Do you have an alarm, TV box, or any other devices that connects to the phone line? If so do those have filters on them? Nope. Just the phone.

said by uid://742598 :Do you have access to the MPOE? If so can you try connecting the modem directly to the MPOE to see if the line remains in sync? It's fine when it's connected outside. The last AT&T person that was here sat out there with me for 15 minutes. He actually said the connection is very solid.

Even checked the inside wiring since I'm insured. I told them to make sure everything is fine and to do as much as they can since I'm paying for it.

I don't know what else to say.

Here is a screenshot of when it goes down at the specific time. See how every single day it happens at the same time frame?
