Software to manipulate quantization tables?

I just bought a new Nikon D90 camera -- the first higher-end consumer camera I've ever had. A friend of mine was telling me that every picture I took can be traced back not only to my camera, but to roughly when I took it -- not on the date and time in the ECIF data, but a shutter count that acts like an odometer. He said folk could trace it back to my camera, at least to the model, by looking at jpeg quantization tables that are model specific.

While I guess there's no big issue with someone tracing a photo of my cat I post on my website back to my camera, there's something about the libertarian side of me that just doesn't like the idea.

Does anybody know of software (as always, preferably open source) that will spoof the quantization tables so that doesn't look like my D90? I guess I'm looking for the photography equivalent of macchanger software...

Thanks!

Battle of the 50 f/1.4's.

Sigma wins over Nikon and Canon....but not by much. The downside of the Sigma is that it is HUGE compared to the Nikon or Canon equivalent. The Sigma looks pretty damn tempting though.

Going to buy the Canon 1D MarkII

One of my goals when returning back to California this winter is to get back into serious photography.

Step 1 (just about as far as I've planned so far), is to get another camera collection started.

Instead of the new 50D, I think I'm going to get a used copy of my favorite camera of all time: the Canon 1D Mark II. It will go with one of my favorite lenses of all time: EF 17-40mm f/4L.

From KEH, I can get the body in Bargain shape (which I hear is more of a way to clear stock than anything, and the quality is actually great) and the lens in Excellent shape for $1940 + tax.

One thing I'm going to try to make sure of before purchasing the body is the number of shutter actuations. If the number is under 60k, I'd be pretty keen to get it. If not, I'd save up for an Excellent shape body, which would cost a few hundred bucks more.

Need Giclee printing recommendation

Looking to get some 5x7 prints on canvas with a wood frame... Lots of places do this, but I'd like a recommendation from someone who has used a shop already and is pleased with the results.

I have 3 prints, 2 copies each to make.

I started talking with someone at wowgiclee.com, but on calling him to finalize things, the number was disconnected, which kind of sets off some alarm bells with me...

Thanks!

Scanner Recommendations For Family Photos

My family is scattered all over the country. Following my Mom's death two years ago all of the family photos came into my brother's possession. His wife did a lot of work sorting them out, but others in the family are asking after copies of particular prints, and still others are interested in seeing the entire lot. So my brother shipped them to me, and now I need to buy a scanner to get these digitized and online so everyone can have access to them.

The material is mostly prints, some negatives, and some over sized prints that have no negatives. I need a good quality scanner that can deal with all three of those and produce pretty high resolution files that can be printed at multiple sizes. My current scanner is many years old, wasn't very good to start with and most certainly is not up to the task.

I'd like to keep price down to $200 or less, but if you have a good suggestion that is a little higher, I'll seriously consider it. I only want to do this project once. :)

Meade DS-80 telescope

Just bought a Meade DS-80 at a garage sale with the Autostar. Asking price $20, paid $15. I figure if I spend another $300.00, I can get the DSI II one-shot color camera and start into Astrophotography. I have just(20 minutes ago)tested out the telescope(I think it was Venus) and it seems optically functional; crisp, clear images, etc... I have to make a 12V DC in for the Az/El motors and HBX controller(battery pack broken).

This will be my first foray into two new hobbies: astronomy and astrophotography. Wish me luck. ;)

Question: has anyone here used this type of setup? I'm not looking for greatness all at once. Just want to start small and build from there. Any comments and input would be welcome. Thanks in advance. :)
