[Notebooks] Dell XPS Notebooks

How is the build quality of Dell XPS notebooks? Strong?

How is the technical support? Is it in India?

The reason I'm asking is that there are major issues with the Gateway notebook that I had (P-7811FX) has major issues. The screen has issues, it overheats, etc.

Hotel Network Cables

Seems like I am spending more time in hotels than I care to. Anyway, a lot of hotels that have wired ethernet usually have a cable in the room already. My problem is that they are almost always TIGHTLY wound around some little stand and weight thing. Try to undo it and you find more kinks than a headbanger's hairdo!

From what I remember from my data cabling class (part of the AS program), you shouldn't bend ethernet cable like that. I usually end up unplugging their cable from the jack (and they have those "anti-theft" short tabs to keep you from removing it w/o a small flat head screwdriver or knife) and plug in my own cable that I carry with me. (A nice 12' Cat 5E patch cable made for me by an IT guy from a job I was on. It's yellow too!)

So, am I doing anything by using my own cable?

[Notebooks] Gateway P-7811FX Review, a bit 56k unfriendly

Gateway P-7811FX Review

As other readers in these forums probably know, I bought the new Gateway P-7811FX notebook PC that's now on sale at Best Buy for $1249. Which at that price, it's a freakin' bargain for what you get as far as specs.

By the time I got done buying it I spent around 1.5 grand. I bought the 2 year Accidental Damage Service Plan, just in case I drop this thing.

Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for... the juicy specs!

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26 GHz)
Memory: 4 GB of DDR3
HDD: 200 GB Seagate 7200 RPM with 16 MB of Cache

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
Weight: 9.2 lbs

Some screen shots...

At first glance...
This notebook is not only fast, it's screamin' fast! The processor alone in this thing is fast. Multitasking is not going to be a problem with this notebook and with Windows Vista 64-bit it really leverages the power of this processor along with its heaping amount of RAM.

Boot up times are great, you hardly have to wait for it to boot. It's like you blink your eye and it's done.

I'm not going to lie, it's heavy. Clocking in at a heavyweight 9.2 lbs. you know that it's a clunker of a notebook.

The graphics card, well... sorry, I haven't had the chance to test this yet. I plan on picking up Hellgate London soon and play it on this notebook. But considering that the graphics card in this thing is no lightweight I'm sure that it'll play some beefy games with no issues.

The screen is great, the only problem is that I had to take the resolution down to 1440x900 from its native resolution of 1920x1200. Sorry, I'm nearsighted and it was giving me a headache having to squint a lot.

Anyways, that's the end of my review. If you have any questions please do post below, I'll be happy to answer them.

New mid-range laptop

Looking for a mid-range laptop. I'll be using it mostly for software development, but a little gaming too. I don't keep up with laptop graphics cards, but I did know I wanted a dedicated card and 4GB of system memory total (I'll have a 32-bit OS so no more RAM is useful). I found this laptop. I've had good luck with ASUS boards in my desktop builds in the past, but never had any experience with them in laptops, just looking for any opinions or advice if I can get a better deal elsewhere. I'd like to keep it pretty powerful, and battery life isn't critical. I just hate having to sit around while my IDE's load and get their shit together when I'm coding. Here's what I'm looking at atm:

Oh, and will probably be purchasing in the next 1-2 months, if that makes a difference.

"Cheap" notebook surprisingly useful!

My wife's 4+ year old Sony Vaio notebook bit the dust this week :( I am not 100% sure what went, but the best I can tell is that it is a motherboard issue. It is not the ram (switched with known good chips), and I do not believe the hard drive, nor the LCD/backlight. or power...so if it is the motherboard, not worth the $ to fix.

So, my wife was in need of a notebook, but absolutely refused to pay much, and her needs are very pedestrian: email/surfing the net/on-line banking/on-line games (not video-intensive). She stores very little, does not download music/videos etc., almost never burns CDs (or DVDs).

So, she found an Acer 5315 at one of her stores (Radio Shack), and it was down to $419...then kick in her employee discount, under $400. When she called and asked if it was an ok notebook, I've got to tell you that I hesitated, as it is only a Celeron 550M, 1gb ram, 80gb drive, and a DVD/CDRW optical drive w/Vista Basic. For only $100 more, she could've gotten something with a dual core AMD Turion, 2gb ram, 120 or better drive, and a DVD Writer, but she said she did not need even that...ok...

Well, I picked it up from her store and brought it home to set up, and to my surprise, it is a pretty "usable" little feller! :o

I had a spare 1gb chip laying around (at least the 1gb came on a single chip, not 2 512mb chips). After sticking in the extra ram, and setting it up, getting rid of the obligatory Nortons, and MS Office "trial" offers, I tuned it up and gave it a "run". Not bad at all! Surprisingly decent keyboard, good layout, decent (typical 6 cell) battery life, very good WiFi, and as long as burning CDs is sufficient (for her it is), it is a very decent little notebook! In fact, the 15.4" "Crystal View" screen is every bit as good, and even better than many I've viewed!

Once properly set up, the Celeron 550M, though certainly a minimal CPU, has plenty enough horse-power for normal functions. Yes, it would bog down quickly if one does a lot of multi-tasking, but for many "average" users, this is really a decent lappy! The Celeron 550M actually does a good job with Vista Basic, as long as it has 2gb ram to work with.

Now, this is not a notebook for gamers, and heavy multi-taskers, but for a basic notebook, or as a back-up machine, I am pleasantly surprised! Would I get "excited about owning one of these? Nah, but the point is that youcan do a lot of basic notebook computing very inexpensively!

I am overall impressed at the build and quality of this Acer, very nicely put together for a cheap price. Next time I am looking for a notebook I will consider an Acer (although on the higher end).

[Notebooks] Schematic for HP DV9009cl

I suspect I have a power supply problem since the HP died a sudden death with no 'lights' except the one at the power plug.

I have experience [past life] fixing electronics but only when provided with a good schematic.

HP only wants to install a new PS for over 1/2 the price of a new laptop. It is out of warranty.

Our local computer repair shops only laugh at this question..but they didn't come from the 'old school'.

Thanks, privatepilot
