[CA] Router forces request for static IP?

I'm having connection failures that I strongly suspect are due to a failing modem. However, Cox tech support tells me that it's due to my router forcing the modem to request a specific static IP, which may or may be available at the time.

I suspect that's not so, because I get a different IP address each time I power up the modem after a fairly long shutdown (at least a minute). Furthermore, I experience the problem with the router disconnected.

The key seems to be to connect the modem directly to the cable with absolutely nothing else connected (no router, no splitter, no TV). When I introduce a splitter (I've tried several), things get dodgy. Since I like to watch TV, I need that splitter. :)

Is it even possible for a router to force a modem to request a specific, static, IP? Or is tech support blowing smoke?

My modem is a Motorola SB5101 Surfboard and my router is a Linksys WRT54G, Rev. 5, with DD-WRT firmware installed (the router was almost unusable with Linksys firmware).

I hasten to add that I've used this setup for quite a long time with essentially no problems. This misbehavior has only started in the last few days.

TIA,
Larry

[VA] slow speeds in fairfax county/herndon area

Noticed a severe drop in bandwidth in the past couple of days, although in working with the speed test tools on this page I am finding that I get wildly different--and somewhat counter-intuitive--results depending on geographic location.

For instance, my speed on the Parsippany, NJ server (which appeared wide open at the time) was .5 mbps. On some server out in CA I hit 7 mbps.

I tried out a number of other sites (linked off of dslreports) and received some outrageously high number from the Newport News VA (Jefferson labs) test, although on the whole far more are grouping at the low end, in the sub 1mbps range.

Curiously, in many of these tests my upload speed was matching or sometimes as much as doubling my download speed.

I am accustomed to downloads in the 12 mbps range, so I am a little baffled, and in fact very annoyed, because my netflix streaming is all jacked up by the inconsistent connection.

This is my first post here and I confess unfamiliarity with which logs I ought to post and so forth. Would appreciate any info on whether anyone on here is aware of some sort of problem on the interwebs on the east coast or that Cox maybe is having an issue or whether there's something I ought to do on my end.

Thanks in advance,

-Jason

[AZ] Ahwatukee Foothills 20MBit to 1.5MBit

I've been consistently getting 15Mbit to 20Mbit speeds downloading for several months now on the premiere package...however last night I was only getting 6Mbit and this morning it was down to 1.5Mbit.

Just wondering if there is known issue or some work being done in our area? Hopefully an upgrade so I can get 30mbit like that user near Ocotillo and Ironwood :)

BTW, I'm near 24th Street and Pecos Road.

Thanks for any info.

I've tried all types of things to get my tv cards to get QAM and nothing works. So, I have to ask, is QAM available in the New Orleans area and if so, will it still be here in Feb. after the switch?
My equipment IS set up correctly but scanning never picks up any QAM stations. Many others in areas outside La. have no problems.
Thanks
