| Woohoo, Very first message :) Well, AEI still struggle... Nexxia, Bell, or this ISP. Man I just wish it was that easy . First months was good (around July to september) and then ---- only crap . No one incuding me seems to not get a hold of supports. Answering machines take care of the business and they don't really bother to reply back, not enough time they claims. The last weeks of October, all people had only one concern: Nexxia. AEI made a large publicity about this saying that Bell/Nexxia are responsible for their problems. Now that the "fix" are done (or almost), still have slow speed and bad pings. When you have past these events to then from now, believe me you take some serious decisions, and believe me these decisions aren't hard to take. [text was edited by author 2002-10-24 14:25:57] | |

| Top of the line provider ?????
After six weeks of disconnects, unuseable connection during prime time, high pings, having to play with MTU to be able to browse the web, phone calls to their answering machine, no reply, emails to sales, support, and accounting, still no reply, a visit to Denis at their Montreal office where I was promised corrections on my account ( no correction was ever done), I guess I'm now fed up with AEI. Top of the line provider my a*s...They take the money on my Visa card as if nothing ever happened, for that they are fast!!!!! I sent them today a final email where I ask them to do the corrections on my account ( one overcharge for September was supposed to be credited, according to Denis) or else, I will call Visa. And then call my bro-in-law and two of my friends, who signed up in October. I never ever saw such a bad customer service, anywhere, ever. And I've seen a lot, I'm 48, and work in sales since 26 years.
To add insult to injury, I had quite a few disconnects again, yeaterday and today, and lost any capability of web browsing this morning for a few hours. They fixed everything?????? Yeah right!!!! They lie, they lie, they lie...that's when they don't hide...! My patience has it's limit, now the pressure cooker is exploding. Enough is enough. They figured out that most people will stay instead of going thru the painful process of cancelling them and starting all over again with another ISP. The few who tried to cancel had no luck either, their emails were not answered, and they had to reach sales to be able to cancel, because accounting was plainly hanging up on them. SHAME ON AEI!
I feel better already. Thanks.

| Got Speed?
I ordered AEI ADSL at the end of September 2002. My modem arrived within a week, and I hooked it up to find absolutely HORRIBLE speed. this was one of the lowest -> »/speedtests/97···36739013
The beginning of October was a very bad time for AEI and I seriously considered returning my modem and cancelling. Especially with the horrendous tech support (forced to leave a message) they (still) have. The stories floating around were that it was a Bell problem. Apparently it was with Bell's nexxia network.
I'm glad I stayed, because once whomever was responsible for the horrible service got their equipment fixed it has been smooth sailing ever since. Average speeds are between 2800-2900 down and around 680 up. The service is supposed to be 3500 down and 800 up, but it's pretty close. »/speedtests/28···43327797
My one complaint is with the (non existent) tech support. I really hope they get this worked out.
Way to go AEI! Good speed for a good price!

Yesterday was wasted because of no connection. I,m on high speed dsl with AEI internet. I live near Carleton Place, outside of Ottawa. They told me it was bell having problems, did any one else have problems or are they shooting some bull.......... My connections and speed have been up and down for the last two months. Before that I was on Dial-up for years and no problems. I have had almost enough, they screwed up my payment account and lost my password and on and on. Is this only me or is this common on high speed. Would like to see some other reviews on AEI.

| THE WORST PROVIDER IN THE WORLD I have to admit....
AEI is easily the WORST GODDAMN PROVIDER IN THE WORLD!!
I *STRONGLY* urge all users to cancel with them immediately! and those who are thinking of even considering them... don't!
I have never had such a frustrating and horrifying experience in my life! Their support department is an answering machine.. I left SO many messages and sent SO many emails and never got any replies! From the first day I couldn't use the internet between the hours of 5pm-11pm. Now, like most people that's the only time during the week that I can use the internet at home! I'd go home everyday and NOTHING would work... couldn't even use instant messenging. Support lied and lied and lied and nothing was fixed... I gave them a month, stupid as I am, and nothing! Finally I send the cancellation and guess what? I get a phone call from support. Too late. However, they have "rules" about cancelling.. you have to cancel 1 week before the end of the month or you get billed for the whole next month!!! SO now i'm stuck with a bill automatically charged to my credit card when I've already changed ISPs.. Lovely... I've been trying to reach a manager alllllllll week and nobody calls back ... ARGH!@@#%@#
Absolutely ridiculous. I've been with SO Many providers and never ever even close to as many problems. I'm with Istop.com now and these guys are amazing... great prices, and the benefit of having a static IP address is definitely worth the extra $4 a month!
AEI, go F*CK yourselves!
Sorry for the rant everyone =) Had to get it out somewhere... the answering machine at AEI just doesn't work! [text was edited by author 2003-03-17 14:14:12]

| Re: THE WORST PROVIDER IN THE WORLD i agree, AEI is plain bad, sometimes you just know their server went down for 20minutes but all they'll say is "have you checked your router? have you checked your modem?" and that's when they actually call back. Technical support is horrible. i'm currently considering magma, looks good, maybe i'll give them a try. I would go back to Sympatico since they removed their bandwidth cap but i didnt buy a modem for no reason.

| Bandwidth Throttling? Ok guys, this is pretty weird. I have a linux based gateway with 3 nics, its my own network design, has DNAT, masquerade , multiple IP's etc ... it works good.
yesterday i get up, reboot te gateway and ... one of my 2 IP's is in a TOTALLY different netblock, 216.221.32.0/19 ... what ever i do ... one of both is in there.
another fine coincidence ... my upload is put to a crawl ... ive done quite alot of speed tests here ... i usually get 650 ... in the couple tests, ive seen 19kbps!!! 19 kilobits!!! thats like 1.5K upload! pathetic!
anyway ... i just did another one and got a promising 390 ... should this be only temporary? should i hope? or should i just cross my fingers, and wait like a dummy on the phone?
cheers
lep.
i also wonder if anyone else has an IP in 216.221.32.0/19 ... and if so, what kind of service do they have.

| AEI is horrible!!! Hello,
To reply, I switched to ISTOP. I've been with them for over a month now and I must admit that they are incredible!!!
I am located in Montreal, but this provider is based in Ottawa. Their prices are incredible and their service is terrific! They provided me with a static IP ($4 extra a month) and they even did my reverse DNS without complaint or charge! and quickly to add (8 hrs.)
If you switch from AEI, I strongly recommend Istop. AEI was just downright disgusting.

| So far so good for me
I have the 1.2 mbps unlimited.
The only thing I can complain about is the mixup with the billing address and shipping address of the modem.
Aside from that, all good. They informed me by e-mail of a double billing before I got my cc bill. They managed to get it corrected before the cc company sent out my bill. So they took precautions to advise me of possible problem with billing but managed to get it sorted out anyways.
Speed is good and no service drops.
Just thought I'd mention my experience since it was good, and I usually just make the effort to post when things don't work out.

I have been with aei now for 4 months now and have not had any problems with there service and I have had no problems with there tech support. Or with there service persons at the company. Well that is my two cents and i hope that all that read this go with this company for they offer unlimited downloads for $30 a month you can't beat that. i would like someone to find a company that offers unlimted downloads and uploads for that cheap.

Basically the router is configured to forward ICMP requests but not to send an ACK (acknowledgement) packet when it receives the request.
This is done to help prevent DDoS attacks and also to lessen the load on the router. -- I love the way you look at me, I love the way you smack my @$$, I love the dirty things you do, I have control of you...

1 edit | Unlimited, right
Been with them for almost a year. Mistake with accounting from bill one. I was using their unlimited dialup until DSL was connected, and they had the guts to charge me $1/hour for the 35 hours i was connected during that time.
Then there's the recurring dns down, routing problems or authentication server down.
'sides that, I have to admit I got my full 1.7M/380k. Seems I'm just a lucky SOB.
Except around november, upload speeds crawled to about 0.01k/sec and eventually transfers timedout after 60kb transfered. That was, for everything BUT p2p. Had to call them 3 times to get this fixed. Once they did, of course they never replied saying it was fixed. It lasted over a month. Downloads during that were not affected at all.
And recently, my account was put on auto-lockout and I had to call them to know why. And had to be transfered to about 5 different persons. Turns out I had transferred in the past 4 weeks "more than Unlimited".
Fsckers.
I still believe 85GB is lower than unlimited.
Looks like i'll have to do some shopping armed with a dictionnary.

Well here's the answer: THEY'RE TRAINED TO DO THAT!
The manager's mantra is "The building's on fire, we still have and never will have any problems at all". They'd rather spew BS than admit their mistakes. So don't expect technical support from them, for any tech that expects to keep their sanity leave that place after one week of work TOPS!

1 edit | Still the worst ISP in Montreal, maybe in the whole country
This time, I give up. After so many years going thru their mediocre performance, their blatant lies, their total lack of customer support, I can hardly wait 'til monday to call them and cancel. I've been one of their first customers in Montreal, their new office on Drummond street didn't even have all their furniture yet and they were painting the walls, that's a long time ago... But now enough is enough.
The last few days, I've been logging on a Teksavvy test account to try, and their customer support is lightyears ahead of AEI. And I'm not even a paying customer yet. Speed: from 200kbps (AEI) to 2500 kbps ( Teksavvy). Same twisted pair of copper wires, same hardware, etc. And as far as I can tell, my house has not moved closer to the CO.
Adieu, AEI, adieu, Denis, and I wish you good luck. You will need a lot of it in the years to come to stay in business. Actually, I don't even think you deserve to stay in this business. I'm sorry but I gave you so much money for so little service for so many years, and I know I will have to fight hard monday to cancel without a hitch or without being charged for the coming month. This time, I'm ready for a fight.
People who consider going with AEI, you've been warned. Ladylay

| Re: Still the worst ISP in Montreal, maybe in the whole country You're among the few lucky ones. I finally called Denis yesterday to cancel and the process was smooth. I feel sorry for the guy. He's a gentleman, we spoke for maybe 15 minutes, and I've been with them for almost 8 years. He was sad I was leaving, I was among their first customers, but he understood. It was like a divorce yesterday, but not a bitter one. He agreed that they had problems and didn't try to hide or whatever. But he always has a tendency to blame Bell for his problems. He also said he will buy new equipment.
I could live, and did, with intermittent slowdowns, but every single evening, for the last 2 months +, crawling near dialup speed, made me give up on them.
For 4 days in a row, I switched my router logins from AEI, to Teksavvy, to Sympatico. And only with AEI did the speed fall consistently to ridiculous levels. Resetted the modem everytime, just to make sure it was not hardware related.
AEI also has to do something about tech support. Being bulled about the number of phones in house, extensions, etc, I didn't need that. Last time I told the guy : look, don't bs me, my house didn't move away from the central office, I have 1 phone hooked up, and a b1 login ( sympatico login borrowed from friend) brings my speed up tenfold.! But they still didn't fix the problem, weeks later. Too bad. Again, I'm not mad at them, I'm sad.

I wish I could edit the first post and remove the thing about not deserving to stay in business but could not. I was harsh and bitter at the time. AEI has a lot to do to catch up. They don't necessarely deserve to be wiped out of the market but they better react now.
