Motorola 5100 Modem

I have a Motorola 5100 modem, looking at comcast site, it is still ok to use on their 16mb tier.

But this morning I had a rep on the phone tell me it isn't.
My speeds are a consistant 6 to 7down and a little over 2 up consistently.
Never close to 16.

Anyone out there know if this modem is compatible with this tier.
Its still docsis 2 from my understanding. but just doesn't want to get near the speeds I should be getting to.
Level of the modem are good or I would post them again. In fact they are posted in another thread here from mid last week. 40/39 down, 33 up

Anyone have this modem and get close to the 16 down? (whats expected, I know I'm not gonna see 16, but even 10-12 would be nice) Not a consistant 6, maybe 7 down.

Thanks for any response

My comcast experence

Comcast's so called help and support is a joke. It's a bunch of college kids reading a web based FAQ and when that fails they use the line "We need to setup a appointment for a tech to come out". Here is my story.

I decided to switch from AT&T to comcast. This would let me save about 20 bucks a month, even though I never liked the cable company. I signed up for the HD TV package, VoIP and internet. To save a bit on the install fee I only wanted them to install the phone since I didn't have the proper tools and leave the rest to me. A contracted installer shows up and I point out where the phone jack and cable jack are located in my home office. I went into the living room to read a magazine while the cable guy did his thing for the phone. About a hour later he tells me it's ready to go and I just have to sign my name away, I sign on the dotted line and he leaves. Twenty minutes later I turn on the TV and it hits me, he forgot my HD cable box then I soon notice there is no picture. I check the other rooms and they're fine. I went to the office and noticed he also didn't leave a cable modem. I took a look at the phone's modem and found out it was one of those Motorola two in ones and he even setup the internet. He plugged the cable modem directly into my PC and disconnected it from the router. I looked at the work order and sure enough I got screwed over. He charged me 50 bucks per line that was ran, he ran three lines, two cable and one phone, I was quoted 90 bucks for the install. I called up comcast and they basically told me oh well. for the install and they will send some one out with in a week to drop off the HD box. Finally after two days I went up to the local "comcast store" and picked up my own box. I got home and hooked up the cable box, it included everything but the HDMI cable!! Had to turn around and go to wal-mart for a HDMI cable and while I was at it I went for a optical sound cable. Got back home and finished the install. Still no picture at all I started troubleshooting and found out I had a drop-amp on the side of the house. I disconnected it and then had to go back to walmart for a splitter and a small coax cable. installed a splitter and finally regained signal for the living room. I called up comcast to complain on the repairs I had to make and there was HDMI cable and they said "We do not include the HDMI cable", yet you can buy the box directly from Motorola and it comes with a 3ft HDMI cable. They said they would knock off two days off the bill. Since I got the TV portion fixed I went to fix my network issue and connect the cable modem to the router. Ran into another huge problem. The MAC address on my computer's NIC was registered to that modem. I had to go out and buy a new router that had MAC address cloning abilities and a new NIC for my PC. I had to loose the 5 port USB card in my system to use the new NIC since my motherboard only has one PCI-E 16x and one PCI. I called them once again and they told me they will wave the first month, they never did. A week later I had to fax a paper and found out my fax machine had no signal. Come to find out the idiot hardwired the Cat5e cable from the wall. He couldn't be bothered to install a 5 cent RJ11 connector or use 4 spade connectors and splice into the socket. Once again I had to roll up my sleeves and fix that issue. Went to radio shack and bought some spade crimp connectors, reinstalled the socket and was back in business.

So lets see here, $250 for a crappy install and about $100 in repairs including gas/wear and tear for the vehicle.

[Connectivity] Comcast Download Speed normal but Upload speed ve

So I have comcast triple play which means I have their Arris modem. Last saturday I noticed some lag in my internet and found that my upload is under 200kbps or it just errors out during speed tests. A technician came the next day and replaced my modem and everything was back to normal for 3 days. Then starting wednesday my upload started being very slow again? Is there an explanation for this since I have brand new wiring and modem?

[Speed] Equipment Power Cycle Needed every 3 days

I'm on the 12/2 connection in a Docsis 3 area. What happens is my speed is great for about three days, then my download speeds won't go above 4Mbps. The only way for me to correct this is to power cycle both the router and modem. I think that this is an internal networking issue, but I'm curious if I would experience the same issue if I upgrade to a D3 modem. I just power cycled both router and modem this morning, I should have run more tests while things were "broken." I will let it happen again and post my results once again. Thoughts?

[Speed] Promised 12MB but getting no more than 4MB!

I have been a Comcast customer for little over 2 weeks in South Florida. However, I have had so many problems and I am just talking to the air with their customer service. All they do is send me a technician and technician checks the usual stuff, finds nothing and leaves.

Maybe I am wrong so, please put your comments here.

I have triple plan and my internet speed is 12MB. Well, it is supposed to be. I have been trying to explain them that I am not getting more than 4MB and sometimes get 5-6MB. My previous internet provider was supposed to give me 8MB and when I checked my speed here at DSL Reports, it would show 6-7MB usually but never below 5MB. I am aware that I am not supposed to get 12MB but I expect at least 8-9MB.

So, they sent the first technician. He says why are you checking DSL Reports? We do not check there, we check http://www.speedtest.net/ or http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ for tests. When I check these two sites, my speed is well above 12MB, like 18-20MB and upload is above 2MB which is supposed to be my maximum upload speed. Then I showed him my speed here which was 3700Kbps and he was like this is wrong. I said look my upload shows 1800kbps, that is working. Then he was like you know too much but finally agreed that something was wrong. He left and problem of course did not go away. Then today another guy came, same thing. He said you have to check the sites we tell you and if it shows good speeds, then you are good :) I said look I need good download speeds because I sometimes watch live stream sports online. He said we have a plan for that you need to pay extra and get 50MB then. I said I do not want 50MB, I want 12MB :) He asked me "so what is your solution?" I said if Comcast reduces my bill by $20 each month, I am happy with my speed. He said they can't do that. Duh!

Anyway, do you guys think am I wrong in my case or should I just go with what they say :) I mean I want faster speeds but it looks like I am going no where with them!

What is your suggestion? Unfortunately, I cannot change a provider as it is too much hassle at time being but any other suggestions are welcomed.

Btw, I am using Mac OS Snow Leopard with a Macbook and I have not messed with my computer since I left my old provider which was working like it was supposed to.

Thanks!

Edit: I have the Linksys WRT54g2 wireless router. I also tried the speeds tests directly connected to the RCA Thomson modem with same results. Also here are my modem's status.

Came from FIOS to Comcast and.....I'm glad I did!

I currently live in MD and the area has both FIOS and Comcast. I dumped Comcast for FIOS due to the speeds but the pricing was EXPENSIVE with fios and when I heard about the docsis upgrade in the area with comcast and right when my contract with verizon was done, i was off to comcast. and wow....the speeds are great. dont get me wrong. FIOS is amazing but im a broke college guy and 80 bucks for 25/15 vs 50 for 50/10 sounds like a deal. 50 bucks for 50 megs sounds awesome. and it is. i do wish though that the modem would be a little more superior. i have an ambit u10c035. ive heard its not a bad modem though. anyways..heres my speed results.

[Connectivity] My area's Comcast + Xbox Live = :(

Copy and paste from the forums Comcast banned me from because I said "Comcrap":

I have spent a few thousand dollars on new equipment such as ethernet cables (Cat6a 550Mhz), Xbox 360s, PS3, TVs, Monitors, Routers, etc and still the problems turn on when I connect to the internet. I get the same results when directly connected to the modem as I do connected to my $200 gaming router.

If any of you are experts at understanding how Xbox Live should run on one's gaming setup then you would understand that something is wrong if you were to come over here and see for yourself. I've been on Xbox Live since beta days back in 2002 and just this past year or so my internet connection has been horrible on Xbox Live. All logic from my perspective points at the connection I am getting from Comcast as the problem.

The main issues are: overall slowdown when connected to internet (as in EVERYTHING is slowed down), seldom get host in ANY game (despite paying for a faster upload speed on paper/pixels then the majority of Xbox Live users), when I do get host it is incredibly laggy for myself with people pausing/skipping all over the place, general lag in every game, and trouble finding matches. Yes, all while connected to Comcasts modem. I have tried the newer DOCSIS 3.0 SB6120 modem, the older SB5129, and the eMTA and get same results. Hurray...

All of this **bleep** highly decreases enjoyment when playing, increases frustration and has led me to seldom play X360/PS3 video games any more (because for me in order to really enjoy games today, you have to be connected to the internet).

This is quite a comparison to a year+ back when everything was running normal on the 'ol 8Mb/2Mb Performance Plus tier Comcast offered back then. Back in those days I would get normal lag that was caused by other players with crappy connections but there was still a normal consistent result to being connected to the internet and playing on Xbox Live. Now one could say it is inconsistently consistent.

All in all, these past 12-14 months have felt as if the internet connection I am getting from Comcast has been robbing me when playing online. Robbing me from a fair playing field, and robbing me from games running like normal (due to being connected to the internet connection from Comcast). Two things that no customer should have to experience for this long if any time at all.

So if any of you are experts in this subject please tell me why I get the above when connected to the modem.

What in this Universe could/would cause this?

Btw, since I have been dealing with this for months and have had little help from Comcast in actually fixing my connection issues I have decided to purchase a capture card and another monitor (I have to spend all this money myself to try and fix things...). So I can try capturing gameplay of me playing and then uploading it to youtube so everyone can see that things are not running like normal. I will be directly connected to the modem when I am able to capture.

Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116400&Tpk=VX2260wm

Capture card: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

This sounds pretty similar to my situation except his is with TV instead of internet: http://forums.comcast.net/comcastsupport/board/message?board.id=CTV_Pic_Quality&thread.id=771

"If the signal strength is good, then I am obviously imagining these **bleep**ed broken channels, and am hallucinating the pixellation and audio/video dropouts on every single **bleep**ed channel. This is absolutely ridiculous, and I am disgusted with the "service" that Comcast allegedly provides. Since no one else is having a problem, and since they blindly followed a script which showed no problem, then obviously there is no problem, and any difficulty I have is my own problem."

[Speed] Suddenly...Faster speed/really strange Location chan

First the speed...So I was downloading a legal torrent of a Phish show from etree and suddenly today I am able to pull consistent 1.2 to 1.4MB/sec download speed. Until today, I had never seen anything over about 800Kbps for a sustained transfer via bit torrent or HTTP Download.

Secondly, on speedtest.net and whatismyipaddress.com it now suddenly shows my location as being outside of Wichita Kansas, but I live in Lancaster, PA. I found this to be very strange.

Anyone know if there has been work going on in Lancaster, PA?
This is what I pulled today,

As you can see, it shows my location as being ~1200 mi from Philly, which I'm more like 70.
