business starter package, $10 gig overcharge?!

I signed up for business starter package, thought I'd give it a try.

Got my first bill today (btw, it was wrong) and on it states :

"Internet bandwidth limit (upload/download) exceeded (per GB) - $10.00"*

* Bases on High Speed Internet Service you subscribed to.

Is this for real? $10/gb overcharge? If this is true I'm calling up tomorrow and telling them to remove everything. what a f****** ripoff!

Throttling of NNTP traffic ??

Hi there,

Up until Thursday of last week I've noticed my NNTP traffic over port: 563 is consistently being kept to 256KB/s, before it would usually be within the of 1700/1900.

For sh*t & giggles I hard reset my cogeco modem, bypassed router, used 3 separate notebooks running, OS's (vista x64, backtrack 3 *nix xp sp3...) all max out at, 256 max! I tried using a friends usenet provider also, encrypted SSL & un-encrypted same result, 256Kbs. Went next door, neighbors cogeco connection maxs out at 500Kbs.

I took all 3 of my notebooks to work, was able to max it out at 2000 without any software config changes, other then the different dhcp ip lease.

Although I do not trust web speed tests, up/down bandwidth is reporting expected levels for cogeco standard from home, no speed issues downloading directly from ftp sites, or straight from the web..

Contacted Cogeco tech support, they advised modem line quality tests were fine, low latency, they insisted that its a pc config issue. The supervisor I spoke with advised cogeco does not throttle nntp traffic at this time.

Several other colleagues from work are reporting similar caps when downloading over usenet, encrypted & unencrypted, doesn't seem to be time specific middle of the day, middle of the night. Most seem to be capped at around 500.

I am wondering how many others are experiencing this?

[Niagara] What a JOKE!

We just got Cogeco.. I was all excited until I got this for a bandwidth test...

Speed Test #82398069 by dslreports.com
Run: 2009-11-23 23:55:34 EST
Download: 8639 (Kbps)
Upload: 1039 (Kbps)
In kilobytes per second: 1054.6 down 126.8 up
Tested by server: 7 java
User: 2 @ dslreports.com
User's DNS: cgocable.net
Compared to the average of 341 tests from cgocable.net:
* download is 9% worse, upload is 10% better

The funny thing is.. When they were here today, it was great at about 14000Kbps down.. Where it's supposed to be.. then tonight I started noticing lag in some games and downloading of the web.. I got rid of Bell because of this.. IS THERE NOT A RELIABLE ISP ANYMORE????

[Burloak] Confirming $30 max charge for overages

Hey there,

I rent out two of my bedrooms to 2 other guys, both also heavy internet users..we've been trying to stay within 60 gigs, but I'm not sure what they did this month, but we hit 60 gigs Nov 11, so we are well over right now, I'm at $21 in overages. If the max charge for High speed Standard is indeed $30, then I might as well tell them to do whatever they want the rest of the month.

But reading on Cogeco's website, I noticed their message "If the Customer exceeds this limit, the Customer may be charged up to a maximum of $10.00 per 1 Gigabyte for both upstream and/or downstream traffic."

I'd hate to download an additional 50 gigs and find out I now somehow owe $500 .. can someone confirm it is a max charge of $30? Or even better, show me the page on Cogeco that says that? I've searched through the forums, but haven't found any hard evidence?

Thank!

[Windsor] Cogeco super slow at night.

It's fine in the day, I'll get like 10 mbps during the day time but when it's peak times (7:00pm ish) this is what happens. It gets worst as the night goes on as well. Downloading stuff becomes absurdly slow. It's very annoying.

[Eastern Ontario] Cogeco Domain Registration - Support lack of k

Long story short - One of my customers has their e-mail and web site hosted by Cogeco. Cogeco is a reseller for tucows, Cogeco registers the domain with tucows and charges my customer. Cogeco then does the dns, e-mail and http. Fair enough, all good so far.

I want to transfer the domain, but the Administrative Contact e-mail is wrong. In my 3 calls to Cogeco Business support, including escalation to a Supervisor, I am being told there is NO WAY to change the Administrative e-mail record. WTF

This is simply not true, (everyone knows that, except Cogeco support) as per tucows faq:

http://helpcenter.tucows.com/index.php?lang=en&catnr=28&faqnr=337&prog=TFC#How%20do%20I%20update%20my%20admin%20contact%20info%20before%20my%20transfer?

And the page to do it:

http://adminchange.com/

It also appears Cogeco will not supply your domain management user name and password to you either... but I didn't push too hard for that as I was already mad. I could complain to tucows, but why bother?

I might have found a bug in Cogeco support staff training or procedures.

Hopefully, this will stay in the forums and be search-able by the next cogeco domain customer that gets frustrated.

[Niagara] Customer Service

I am totally upset with the customer support. I convinced my father to switch to Cogeco internet because of the service he is lacking with Bell. A guy from PVS came to the house and told my Dad's wife that he couldn't install the internet because there was a problem getting to the main cable. He then left after 15 min of waiting for my Dad to show up. My father then called Cogeco and they fed him a pack of lies, saying that the installer was instructed not to drill holes and that he waited around for 30 minutes for my father to arrive. The supervisor on the phone was totally uncooperative and would not ask the installer to come back. She said there are no other options other than my father would have to wait until tuesday for someone to come and do the install. Unfortunately this is not a very good impression to an existing customer of Cogeco.
