[HSI] Modem Incorrectly Provisioned?

Ever since I called CS yesterday to resolve another issue with my modem losing sync I seem to be capped at 5m speeds, I checked the my account section on the charter site and it says I should be on 10m, as I have had for months now. Could one of the techs on here check to see if my modem is properly provisioned. I will send the MAC in a PM to whoever responds. Thanks.

[Upgrades] Botched install call

I had an install of the HD upgrade scheduled for 5:00 to 7:00 PM yesterday. The automated phone call came the day before and confirmed it. I'd scheduled being off work to be available. With the problems I've had in the past, I called about 4:30 and their ANI (Automatic Number Identification) told me there was a call scheduled as soon as I keyed the 1 for ENGLISH.

No one came by a little after 6:00, I called and reconfirmed. No one came by about 7:15 when we finished supper and I called and reconfirmed. Still no one here at 8:00 and I called and spoke with option 4 person ... yes, still on schedule. No one showed at 8:45, and I took option 4 again ... I want to emphasize that everyone was VERY courteous ... oops, I'm told, tech (a contract tech) reports no one was home, house was single story with brown door, no shutters, and a NICE mailbox ... and the install was cancelled, rescheduled.

INTERESTING ... house number is in 4" high numbers on the mailbox post and at front door. Front door was open with a full view glass storm door. I have black shutters. Mailbox is ordinary. HEY, it is single story at the front. Tech and supervisor report calling and getting a busy signal ... the only time the phone was in use was for my calls to Charter, but hey, it is a Charter phone line, and who knows.

I wish this was the exception, but it does not seem to be.

They've rescheduled with a house description in addition to the address. (This is a 250 lot subdivision, and I am near the entrance; see a Charter vehicle 2-3 times a week, it seems.) My cell is also going on the work order as backup contact number. I wonder what will happen?

Just venting ... George in "Greer"

DVD recording with copyright issues

Purchased 2 DVD recorders last winter for the sole purpose of recording TV programming and all was wonderful until the start of the new fall TV season. Gradually began having problems with the recorders shutting off at random times during timed recordings of Fox, ABC and NBC. Received message: "Copy-protected. Cannot record." The only network we can successfully record now is CBS. Is anyone else on Charter having this problem? Anyone have suggestions to work around this? I fear we've wasted $400!

[HSI] how to add additional CPE to resendental acount?

Is there any way to get Charter to allow more than one CPE? I dont need a static IP I just want 2 public facing DHCP addresses. I have 2 xbox 360 and want to be able to play on line with both at the same time. This is not possible through a nat, (both xboxes expect traffic on the same port).

Or do I have to go with Charter Business?

[HSI] Once upon a time...

...in a small neighborhood in southeast Louisiana a boy 15 years old got the internet. This dial up internet wasn't very fast but it was still access to the world! As time passed, new things came out like online games and live video chat. Oh how he would love to someday speak with his family in the far north with live video. Anyway, as this young boy found out about better internet, he would call the cable and phone companies asking for better internet. Everytime they would tell him its not available. More years passed and the boy grew depressed in the advancing technology not reaching his area.

Today, the boy who only wanted better internet had a birthday and turned 22 years old. To this day he can call his cable and phone providers and get the same answer he got 7 years ago... "service unavailable." The boy, who is now a man, has given up all hope that better internet will ever be available in his area.

The End

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with webmail this morning. Worked fine last night (last checked it around 11 pm or so) and this morning, I get an error message when I attempt to sign in. I intend to wait until the afternoon to call it in since I know there can be spotty problems with it, but thought I'd throw out the question in case anyone else having problems.

Charter is now blocking POP3/SMTP

Neither Outlook, Thunderbird nor basic telnet to port 25/110 works anymore.

Charter seems to be blocking POP3/SMTP to any non Charter mail server now.

I am in Southern California in the San Gabriel Valley, city of Walnut.

Anyone else encountering these issues?

I inform them that they are blocking the ports, I try to explain that it has nothing to do with their mail servers, I am using my own...but they are clueless...I don't fault the support people, I fault Charter...FIOS here I come.

Adding Internet Service

Hopefully you'll get a kick out of this. It was amusing to me as it happened. It's unfortunate that I began this conversation assuming I would not be successful.

If anyone has suggestions on how to simply purchase service without any hassle, let me know. I am not going to take off work and wait around all day for someone to show up and see that the cable is already ran and attached properly and charge me $50 for the privilege. I started out pulling and terminating RG62 (for Arcnet) in the late 80's. I'm pretty sure I can attach coax to a modem.

9PM online chat from last Thursday:

Thank you for choosing Charter Chat Live! A Customer Care representative from HSD Support will be with you shortly.
You have been connected to TTD Pia .

TTD Pia : Thank you for contacting Charter. My name is Pia. How may I help you today?

My Name: I subscribe to Charter Cable TV only currently. I have a Surfboard 5101 connected here. Can I give you my MAC Address and order internet service now? Painlessly? Without an "install charge" of $50 since I've obviously already installed it...

TTD Pia : There is a separate installation charge for our internet service. Technicians will be sent to install service, unless you prefer the install the internet yourself. You will need the self install kit for that. To assist you better, I will transfer you to our Sales Support. Please stay online.

TTD Pia has left the session.
Please wait while we find an agent from the CHAT - CVGS - Ask Charter Sales department to assist you.
You have been connected to CVH Erica .

CVH Erica : Thank you for contacting Charter Communications. My name is Erica. How may I assist you?

My Name: I subscribe to Charter Cable TV only currently. I have a Surfboard 5101 connected here. Can I give you my MAC and order internet service now? Painlessly? Without an "install charge" of $50 since I've obviously already installed it... Don't want nor need any install kits or professional install services.. It's hooked up, just want to pay some money and have the bits flow please...

My Name: Cable MAC Address: 00:ff:ff:ff:ff:7c

CVH Erica : One moment please, while I check on this for you.

CVH Erica : My Name I do apologize but can I please transfer you to our internet support department to look into this for you. Again I do apologize, I don't want to give you false information. Can I transfer you now?

My Name: why? I don't need support I'm trying to simply order new service...

CVH Erica : Can I please have your address, so I can pull your account and see if you qualify for a self install. Do you have a cable modem already?

My Name: My Address, Sometown, TN 37999 Yes, as previously mentioned, I have a Motorola Surfboard 5101 already connected. Already talking to the Charter CMTS, already has an IP of 97.81.62.62 which don't work because I've not paid you for service yet.. I simply want to do that...

CVH Erica : Thank you, one moment please.

My Name: Qualify for a self-install? Heh, I beta-tested Charter cable modem service here in 1997(?) and hooked everything up myself then... Pretty sure I should "qualify" ;-)

CVH Erica : I do apologize for any inconvenience, but if you are not a Charter tech, you are not legally allowed to remove the tap from the line at the pole. To have this done, we must send a tech and it's a fee of $49.99 that cannot be waived nor is it negotiable.

My Name: Excuse me? Are you accusing me of something? I've not touched any "poles", I took an existing coax cable where cablemodem service was previously attached and screwed the F connector onto the modem and plugged the power cable in.

CVH Erica : Oh, no I'm not accusing you of anything. Our policy is that a tech has to come out to remove the tap from the pole. I didn't mean anything about what you did in the past.

My Name: I subscribe to Cable TV service from Charter already, the cable is already split at the side of the house with one leg going to the TV and the other to my computer desk, where I just attached it to a modem.. Where it SUCCESSFULLY negotiated sync with the Charter CMTS and is happily communicating with it now.. It simply is not getting a valid IP because I've not paid for_internet_ service yet...

CVH Erica : Unfortunately, we would have to send a tech out to your home to hook up your internet services. I am unable to set up the service with out a tech installation, the system will not allow it.

CVH Erica : Can you please verify the last four digits of your social security number so I can discuss with you the services you do currently have?

My Name: Heh, OK... Hopefully you realize that's rather silly... And that's part of the reason Charter has had some of the lowest customer satisfaction ratings of all the big ISPs.. Oh well, thanks anyway... No thanks, I'm happy with my other services from Charter, they are very minimal and don't cost me a fortune...

CVH Erica : Is there anything else I can help you with today?

My Name: No... thanks

[CATV] Using a Drop Amp on Charter

Would Charter be upset if I attached this drop amp to my cable line? I picked up one of these on eBay for $10 and have the power supply for it. The unit is brand new in the box and sells for about $150-$275 on the Internet. The unit is intended as part of a sophisticated and very expensive GE home security system.
