Help me to understand...

I've had service with Sudden link for roughly 3 weeks; have experienced 2 outages, and speed issues. I recovered the OS yesterday, and thought that fixed the issue. I went to do my updates today (running XP SP1 at the moment) from M$ and received an error that stated the firewall could be causing my problem. I used the speed test of choice for Sudden link and it shows my upload is 9k (should be 256).

I don't know what most of this means, and neither do the phone techs I talk with. Maybe somebody from this site or Sudden link can help???

Problem using online backup

I'm in Abilene, Texas. I'm trying to use MozyHome from mozy.com. It backs up your computer to the their servers on the internet. I've got about 80 gigs of data to upload.

I know it will take a long time to back up, but I think Suddenlink is shaping/throttling my connection.

After I get about 20MB uploaded, I get a TCP reset packet. Mozy's support says the reset packet shouldn't be coming from them.

I guess I understand how me uploading _tons_ of data can look like I'm p2p'ing something, but I'm not. Is there some way around this.

Terrible latency at peak evening times

I've had this happening for a while now (weeks) and am scratching my head in trying to get it taken care of.

Initially my DVR started "dropping out" every once in a while while I was watching digital channels or playing back something recorded from a digital channel. The sound would cut out randomly and the screen would pixilate as if I was tuning the channel in. After a couple of seconds this would clear up and both the sound and picture would resume as normal. This might not happen for 3 days or 10 times in half an hour, it seemed to be completely random.

Then I started noticing my ping times would start getting much higher than they should be, at some point in the high 1000s to some sites, game servers and voice servers.

We had someone come out and he diagnosed the DVR as the issue and replaced it, but we had exactly the same issue after he had left. After exchanging emails with Pete Abel through this site we had someone else come out last week and again, he tested everything he could test (pole, wiring, etc.) and he could find nothing wrong at all.

After he had left, sure enough we had the same issues on the DVR and tonight my ping times to my Ventrilo (voice chat) server are hitting over 1000 at times and my ping to WoW was 1600 about an hour ago.

I'm simply at a loss as to what to do next, other than switching to another provider (which I am considering). From one night to the next I have no idea whether my Internet will be in a functioning state. It was fine last night but I had the aforementioned massive pings tonight, so it varies day-to-day.

Perhaps there is a problem further down the line than my house, as clearly these issues are being caused by something, but now two Suddenlink people have found nothing wrong with the connection at my house and I'm thinking that's because there is nothing to find.

Switching to DSL is a problem because we will have to switch our telephone service back to AT&T and they will only certify our house on their lowest speed plan.

Does anyone have any suggestions or can even corroborate my experiences? I'm getting very frustrated at this point.

I even changed the modem cable tonight to see if that was the problem (I was 99% sure it wasn't) and that had no effect.

This is a summary of 200 pings to my Ventrilo server done a moment ago:

Ping statistics for 69.12.52.194: Packets: Sent = 200, Received = 189, Lost = 11 (5% loss),Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 80ms, Maximum = 456ms, Average = 203ms
And a tracert to the same:

And finally, a Line Quality test from here at dslreports. It doesn't make good reading: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2423827

I only seem to get this problem between peak hours of 6pm and midnight. It never happens in the morning or the afternoon or in the middle of the night. Evenings is the only time I have experienced this...so perhaps my area is oversubscribed?

Suddenlink Throttling Bandwidth?

Many of the games I play require the use of bittorrent to download the game itself, expansions, and patches. Bittorrent is widely used by these gaming companies, along with other software and media companies, to reduce the amount of bandwidth they have to use sending out all of these files.

For two years I've not had any problems using bittorrent, but as of ~1-2 months ago, any time I use it, I cannot get very good speeds at all on the torrent itself, and my browsing speeds become abysmal. Browsing becomes so slow that nearly every other page that I try to load times out - this with bittorrent downloading at speeds even as low as 5k/s, with uploading limited to 1k/s.

I went through a number of steps to diagnose the problem:

- I tried a different bittorrent program; that didn't solve the issue so I reverted back to my favorite, utorrent.

- I tried my laptop, same issue.

- I bought a new modem. Didn't solve the issue.

- When visiting family in Oklahoma I used my mom's cable internet there on my laptop. Everything worked fine, with bittorrent being fast and browsing still possible while it was active.

- Called suddenlink to check my connection. It's adequate. I was then told that there's really nothing else that can be done - the connection was good - everything worked great when I was not using bittorrent, on both computers, and using both modems. I was told by a representative to discuss the issue here to see if I could get any answers.

Obviously it wasn't my issue.

I had recently read about companies throttling bandwidth usage that affects programs like bittorrent and the subsequent lawsuits brought on by customers, so I have been suspicious that that was the problem. It turns out that I know a few folks here who work at suddenlink (and even one that I didn't know!) tell me they suspected this to be the central issue as well because they use bittorrent and it has become basically useless within approximately the last 6 months.

It's almost as if bandwidth is limited based on the number of peers connected, though I have limited the number in my bittorrent software significantly and still get horrible speeds.

While I can understand the rational of throttling bandwidth for programs like these, I don't understand why such an issue would not be disclosed. I am not getting the service that I'm paying for when I use a specific downloading method - I am not getting near the bandwidth I should be getting. And I am getting very upset about this issue. I don't think legal action is the best course; a disclosure and possible change in the way bandwidth is allocated and charged for is the best route. I'm hoping that will happen if this is the central issue.

I live in Lake Charles Louisiana and would like any feedback from suddenlink representatives or users on this issue.

This problem needs to be escalated and handled. I am sick of paying for a poor performing service when I should be getting high quality high speed internet.

Remote Desktop

I just changed my isp from verizon to suddenlink and it was for the sole purpose of using remote desktop with my vista business pc. My setup is a linksys wrt54g router that I have given an internal static ip address to and have forwarded the port 3389 to the static address. And the modem that came with the initial setup from suddenlink. I wish i could give a model number but I just don't see one.

Anyway, within my own network I am able to use remote desktop without any problems at all but when I try to use it outside of the network it won't work. I am extremely frustrated with this and any help would be appreciated.

Is there something specific that suddenlink blocks or does not allow? If so how do I fix it?

Thanks

WV Users, Would you recommend Suddenlink?

Well as the topic states, I'm looking to switch ISP's. I'm in the SW part of the state (Princeton/Bluefield area) and have little options for internet. Currently I'm on a spotty DSL service at 40 a month, I can pick up the 6m package from Suddenlink for 30 a month for the first year and 40 a month after that. Also I have read that I shouldn't use the stock modem, but buy a different one, would you recommend that.

Any help on outages/etc is greatly appreciated.

Post 12meg Account Speed Test results here. 7-2-08

Ok Folks, Let try something new today. The immediate response I will get from a tech that comes out to my house is " Lets run a speed test that dont hit the bgp and peer out" Tech's who even can comprehend this is slim to none, anyway's it it not the tech who is local that is to blame. Ok, well if that what they want, then lets give it to them. The first link is a way to setup a SID name. So even if your IP changes, you can still pull historical stats from the SID name on the database reports link. Please use the same one each time you run the test.

The other link is database that you can put your SID in and set the date back a few months to see all that is still stored on file. So, if this helps at all to get my speeds somewhat consistant, the I guess what Sen. Byrd said about SL bringing WV from the gutter in terms of avg. speeds may still hold true, but until then, looks like that pat on the back was a little premature since we are actually in the "alpha" stages of testing. Shouldnt we be getting paid for that?

SID Speedtest:

Database Reports

Now, this has been around since the start of their launch of the test site, usually goes back i think 45 days? But, it may not be around if this rub's salt into the wounds....

Suddenlink HD Sound Problems

I have SL extended basic cable in East Texas... no HD cable box or anything. I get a few HD channels on my new Samsung LCD HDTV. On those HD channels, there are sound problems where it makes this weird noise. It's like the sound can't keep up or something. The voices are slowed down and distorted.. and the voices are hard to understand almost like they're robotic. This happens randomly and is really annoying. It doesn't happen on the non-HD channels, when I play a DVD, or when I play wii.

Has anyone else experienced this? Will it go away if I upgrade to more HD programming?
