[Satellite] Question for Satellite Users

Let me set this up a bit.

I'm currently involved in a thread in the Cox forum about poor HD picture quality delivered by Cox. My two biggest issues are macroblocking during motion scenes, and a general lack of definition in the picture, sort of like what you get when you overcompress a JPEG image. Since this phenomena has been reported by both me and another fellow in another city (but in the same market), and I have also seen it at my parents house, and we're using three different types of HDTV's (me with CRT, the other two Plasma and LCD), and given the RF according to the boxes are well within spec, I believe it is due to overcompression by Cox.

Now the question: several users insist that its not the fault of Cox, but its the broadcasters fault. They claim that if Cox is delivering a channel that is experiencing macroblocking and poor definition, its simply because they got it that way and they are just passing it along, untouched. I don't believe that at all, so my question to you good folks who use DirecTV or DISH is, do your HD channels, especially History, SciFi, ESPN/ESPN2, ABC, CBS, NBC, USA experience these same symptoms? If your channels do not exhibit these same problems, then clearly the broadcasters are not at fault. Thanks in advance for reading and posting.

Free Satellite Signals?

Is there such a thing as free signals to my satellite dish? If yes, what kinds of signals do they carry (ClearQAM, ATSC, etc) and how can I determine which ones are available in my area?

I live in Phoenix Arizona. I will be adding a TV tuner to my PC, and I'm interested in receiving anything I can get free and legal (from my antenna, from my COX cable, from the dish on my roof).

Ceton is set to take over the CableCARD PC tuner market

http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/09/11/ceton-is-set-to-take-over-the-cablecard-pc-tuner-market/#continued

This has been posted over in other forums and I have been reading about this tuner for a few days now. All I can say is if it does what they say it will do, then say goodbye to every STB and the MDVR in my house. Good riddance to the crappy guide limited DVR storage and buggy interface. I have my WMC units already in place so I am set. Question is how well it will stream live tv over the network. I have no experiance with extenders, anyone? How well do they work... I mean the thought of only having to rent 1 cable card.... WOW!

I did the math and Dish will be much cheaper then comcast.

Is buying direct from dish the best price?
I want to add a second HD box, should I rent or buy one from Ebay?

Since I already have cable TV in the house, will they use my existing run of cable?

DirecTV one pole solution?

Currently have a Ku-multisat dish feeding a SD-DVR. Want to upgrade to Ka/Ku-multisat and HD-DVR. I'm also a HughesNet subscriber (98cm dish). Both dishes mounted on one 8' Sch40 (steel) pole set 36" into concrete (w/anti-spin bar). Four new Belden BC1829BC cables (3GHz/BC/flooded) and a new 10ga solid copper ground wire run to the exterior wall in a 25' trench. Cables/ground wire enter/exit trench through PVC weatherheads and conduit. No splices, indoor cable block, ground wire goes back outside to service entrance common ground. Installation actually exceeds HughesNet minimum standards - which by themselves generally exceed those of DirecTV. No mutual interference between dishes, DTV transponder signals typically run in the mid to high 90s (a few @ 100).

Problem is that a local installer said he wasn't permitted to put an upgrade dish (Ka/Ku-multisat) on the pole with a 2nd dish. He wanted to install a 2nd pole (I just dug the old one out last month) and mount the DTV dish independent of the HughesNet dish. I feel that is totally redundant, when everything he needs is already in place. Plus, I don't want the yard dug up again, and I don't want any more holes drilled in my metal roofed brick house. All he has to do is replace the old dish on existing (approved) pole, connect it to existing (approved) cables and ground wire, replace old DVR, commission new DVR. I'd call that a plum job, all the grunt work is already done for him. A one-pole solution.

I emailed DirecTV customer support to ask why, but - not surprisingly - their response had absolutely nothing to do with the question. Anyone here run into this "one dish- one pole" thing before?

Dish Vs Direct TV [getting fed up with Dish DVR]

I am reaching the end of my rope. I am a long time customer of Dish network, we have been using them since '94.
About a year after moving to Ohio, we decided to get the dual tuner/DVR package.
The first tuner lasted about 2 years, the last year we had to do a lot of resets by turning the unit off.
Now the second DVR starting to act up. Like right now, Tuner one is getting local channels, tuner 2 says "you can watch non-local programing" when we try to watch local programs [The message doesn't appear all the time, but it seems to be popping up more and more].

Ok my question is this:

Does Direct TV have better Dual Tuner DVrs?
