Traffic detours btw BC & Washington state

If you are driving from Vancouver to Seattle, be prepared for traffic detours and major delays for weeks/months. A truck driver going from BC to Washington took out a bridge on I-5 and 4 lanes of traffic are now blocked.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/state-patrol-i-5-bridge-over-skagit-river-collapses-in-nw-wash-vehicles-people-in-water/2013/05/23/ef618aaa-c41c-11e2-9642-a56177f1cdf7_story.html
The bridge is used by an average of 71,000 vehicles a day, so the roadblock will cause a major disruption in trade and tourism between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The department also is recommending detours using state Routes 20 and 9 that add tens of miles to a trip. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible, especially over the Memorial Day weekend.

Cynthia Scott, the wife of truck driver William Scott, said Friday from the couple’s home near Spruce Grove, Alberta, that her husband saw the collapse. The Washington State Patrol said the truck driver works for Mullen Trucking in Alberta. The tractor-trailer was hauling a housing for drilling equipment southbound when the top right front corner of the load struck several trusses on the north end of the bridge, the patrol said. Scott voluntarily gave a blood sample for an alcohol test and was not arrested.

Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste blamed it on the too-tall load. The vertical clearance from the roadway to the beam is 14.6 feet.

Greed is good for some

So I'm sitting here reading the morning paper on my tablet, and see a puff piece on the Rolling Stones and their Toronto shows.

Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to check you out ticket prices. They start at $165 and hit $650!!!!!

++++ of course.

Holy moley, by the time its all said and done some people (with more money then brains) have shelled out the the equivalent of a mortgage payment to see some 70yr olds fill their coffers . They were past their best before date at SARSstock, let alone a decade later.

I'm not a huge Stones fan, and the only groups I'd shell out more then a 100 bucks to see would be Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd, if which neither will ever happen.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

Canada ranks 3rd last in paid vacations

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2013/05/24/vacations-canada-3rd-last.html?cmp=rss

quote:Canada ranks third last among economically advanced countries in the amount of paid vacation time it guarantees its workers, a new U.S. study indicates.

The country, which for the most part mandates 10 vacation days annually, ranks ahead of only Japan and the United States, which is in last place.

Japan also requires 10 days paid vacation for workers, but unlike Canada has no paid statutory holidays. The U.S. — the "no-vacation nation" — doesn't guarantee any paid vacation, the study says.

"In the absence of government standards, almost one in four Americans has no paid vacation (23 per cent) and no paid holidays (23 per cent)," says the report, which was published in Washington by the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Sadness

Whenever I visited my cousin Michelle in Saint John, New Brunswick... Matthew was always visiting. He was like a second brother to Jaden (Michelle and Donnie's son) and was his constant companion. He lived two doors away from my cousins, the Merzettis. Despite the fact Muscular Dystrophy had robbed him of the youthful pleasures most his age took for granted he always smiled. And was extremely pleasant...

I am saddened to hear he passed on Wednesday. Jaden and his older brother Julian will be pole bearers....

How to BBQ a steak like a steakhouse

I'm in a good mood tonight so I'll share my recipe for a BBQed steak here.

First of all the quality of the meat counts. If you don't have a trustworthy butcher shop near you I recommend the Costco AAA Strip Loins. They come about an inch and a quarter thick. The crap you get in your typical supermarket simply doesn't compare.

Now I use a combination of Montreal Steak Spice and a spray on marinade called Smokin' Grill which went off of the market about three years ago.

Not to worry though!!! They put the list of ingredients on the label so I've been making my own for the past three years. Here's the recipe.

In a clean, food grade spray bottle combine the following ingredients.

4 Oz Water
2 tsp Liquid Smoke
1-1/2 tsp Tabasco Sauce
1 tsp Soya Sauce
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp Balsamic Vinegar

Give the bottle a good shake. It will keep in your cupboards without refrigeration for years.

Now, as for the steaks, fire up the BBQ to preheat.

Sprinkle a tablespoon of Montreal Steak Spice on each steak and squirt on about a teaspoon of the marinade per steak as well. in a clean bowl, mix up the steaks so they are evenly coated with steak spice and marinade and allow to sit for about 3 minutes.

Then toss the steaks onto the fire, reduce flame from high to medium and cook for about 4 minutes per side to your desired level of doneness.

Give this recipe a try and you will never waste money on a steakhouse again. Your guests will swear it's as good as any restaurant's.

Enjoy your summer...

Bon apetit... ;)

[Weather] Frost Warning (again)

EC has put out another frost warning for tonight, cover or bring in your plants. It could extend throughout the weekend.

Unfortunately it must have dipped down to sub zero temperatures last night, I lost 3 basil plants, and a stevia plant also was damaged.

--

OT - stevia is neat stuff, it grows like a bush though its somewhat fragile and prone to loosing branches in high winds. Useful as a sweetener in tea and other drinks, and doesn't have a gross after taste common with artificial sweeteners. The down side is the plant leaf itself has a real greenish-vegetation taste, though this can be reduced by not crushing the leaves, or using whole dry leaves.

Judge will not certify class action suit for G20 detainees

Replacement batteries for APC UPS?

After a power failure this week-end, I came to realize that the batteries in all of my UPSes were not up-to-snuff; they did not last near as long as they should have. The sticker that I put on them when I last replaced the batteries said Oct 2007.

Looking for replacements, I came across this outfit in Toronto. Has anyone ordered from them? It makes me a little nervous when I try to research their shipping and return policies on their web site and find this...
