Question About Upconverting DVDs

Hi,

I just bought a Samsung 40in 1080p 120hz TOC TV and right now I have a Philips DVP3962 dvd player. I have it hooked up with an HDMI cord and was watching some movies on it at the upconverted 1080i setting. But the video moves a bit faster than it normally should, but not by much, just a little. Is there anyway to change settings so it's back to it's normal speed. Thanks!

Media players

Hi, folks. I'm looking to get a media player as a Christmas gift for someone and wanted to know if anyone here had first-hand experience with (hopefully) both of these units. I've been reading a lot of first-hand accounts over on AVSForums and it still seems like a tossup. Even if you only have experience with one, I'd like to hear what you do and don't like with your unit. Thanks.

Does pausing a CD player do any damage?

I am trying to help my mom here - she thinks it will harm the CD player to put it in "pause" mode for a half hour or so. From what I googled, it sounds like the only "problem" with that is that the machine is running and so will not last as long. In that case, a half-hour pause wouldn't be a big deal. I'm wondering if this "theory of danger" is a carryover from cassette tapes getting worn out if left in "pause."

She listens to audio books on CD and while she tells me she is getting pretty good at fast forwarding, this seems unnecessary hardship for her (in my opinon.) However, my brothers (who know everything ;-) have told her it's not safe to pause.

Any thoughts? Thanks so much!!!

DVR to PC

I remember hearing some people mention that it is possible to record shows recorded on a Comcast DVR to a PC using a firewire cable.

Problem is, none of my systems have firewire, is there any way I can do this through USB or any other type of connection? Or read the harddrive on a PC? I want to get some recorded episodes that I want to keep off of that thing without basically doing an analog copy over composite, yes composite, my equipment is old, it doesn't even support s-video.

The best software and format for capturing video?

I'm about to take on several large projects requiring some knowledge of digital video. One requires me to digitize 30+ VHS tapes I have. The other requires me to dump a bunch of digital video I shot on a Panasonic digital video cam.

My first question: What is the best format to capture this video in? Windows Movie Maker seems to favor the AVI format, but I'm always suspicious of this format. For one thing, the files seem really, really big, and for another, isn't this format proprietary to Microsoft? Is there a better format, say MPEG-4 or something? I'm willing to put up with large file sizes if someone can make the argument that the sound and video quality will be better. But if an open-source (or more universal) format that produces smaller file sizes provides comparable quality, that's the way I'd like to go.

My second question: What is the best software for me to use to capture video? So far, I've used Microsoft Movie Maker, and Nero Vision. Both seem extremely limited. Is there a better program for me to use that is either free or sells for under $100?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Tuner/capture card for Satellite

What brand or model HDTV tuner/capture card would be best to use with a Dish TV Satellite and O.T.A antenna source input?

I have used ATI All In Wonder 800 XT card in the past with just standard digital Satellite, and all tuning etc.
was necessarily done at the Sat box, so most of the cards tuning, programming and EPG features never got used.

Thanks

[OT] Sometimes the misinformation astounds me...

Found in a different forum. Someone was asking if the Blu-ray release of a certain cable series was worth spending the extra money over a DVD release. This is one of the replies:

quote:I'm pro Blu-ray, but even I say just get the regular DVDs. For action movies like Transformers, and Star Trek I'm all about Blu-ray. They were filmed in HD. I don't get people that are replacing their DVD collections and scooping up cheap Blu-ray's of Die Hard, and Usual Suspects. None of these movies were originally filmed in hi-def. Hell, hi-def hadn't even been invented. All you are buying is an SD movie put a HD Blu-ray disc.

The mind boggles
