A "Site Shot" is a small, thumbnail size image of a particular web page that can be inserted in your posts (premium users) here on the site.

You construct a site shot by using this coding in your post:
[siteshot]place_some_URL_here[/siteshot]

]]>...where the URL is any valid one, including the http://

Once posted, clicking on the image will take one to the website mentioned and pictured. Clicking on "enlarge" under the image will take one to the graphical snapshot at the time the post was created (frozen in time). The image that will appear looks like this:

If you use this feature here on DSLR, the image will appear as if the viewer was logged out of the site. Forums and information that are not available to all members will not be viewable. If the site is "down," the viewer will see a red X instead of a "page cannot be displayed" message. An already-existing siteshot can be inserted into an instant message (IM) by first using your mouse to hover over the existing siteshot, recording the number that will be visible in your taskbar, and then by using this coding:

»Site FAQ »Site Shots
Snapped 2003-06-27 21:08:32
...where 276 is the number you obtained from the first step. Another way to do this: Create the siteshot in a forum post preview screen without actually posting it. In your post, properly insert a site shot and hit "preview." Give it about 10-15 seconds and hit "preview" again. You should see your site shot in the preview window now. Mouse over the (enlarge) link, and it should show the png number in your status bar. Once you have the number, you can cancel out of the post without completing it. You can then utilize the site shot wherever you need to. Note: There is a period of time, approximately 24 hours, during which repeated shots of the same site will not "take." Only the original will show. After that time period, a new shot of the same site can be posted. ------------- Want a site shot in your FAQ? If you generate a siteshot somewhere on the site, you can copy/paste the image address for use in a FAQ. Even if the post gets deleted, the image remains. You won't have the "enlarge" link, unless you add that in as well. ------------- Thanks to Optimized for portions of this information.

Q: What does the BBR "MVM" tag mean?
A: MVM stands for Much Valued Member. BBR values ALL of its members very much. But in any group the size of BBR, there are some whose efforts go just a little further than average. The MVM tag is awarded to those members as our way of saying "Thanks for what you do."
BBR MVM does not necessarily mean a member is extra smart about anything, or always 100% right in the answers or advice they give. They may have received the recognition because of an effort they made in one forum and may be a total novice in another forum.

MVM is not necessarily a permanent tag -- people's habits change and periodically MVM accounts are reviewed to see if they may have "self-retired" from the mainstream. In those cases, the MVM tag may be removed.

Not eligible: Mods/Hosts (current or former) and DSLR staff members. Mods who were formerly MVMs lose that tag when they become mods.
-
Q: Some will say "what about so and so? They're an awesome help over in the XYZ forum."
-
A: That may very well be true, but this is a new process. In time, it will recognize others. Their time may come.
-
Q: Ok, but what exactly are the selection criteria?
-
A: Basically, it's like the points system, an attempt at systematically identifying those who are considered extra helpful and continue to contribute. The moderators can nominate people as deserving of the MVM tag. Neither Justin nor anyone else who works for broadbandreports.com is involved in the selection process.
-
Q: Can I nominate someone or myself for this tag?
A: The answer is no. It doesn't work that way.

Broadband Reports now has an option to enable blocking email sent through the site. It is not selective; once enabled, all email is blocked.
There is a checkbox to do this at this link: /join

The checkbox is marked "no email via site: (members cannot even email you via BBR)."

Registered members have a choice of the Vertical menu on the left side of the screen along the top. The new user default is to see the Vertical menu on the left. This can be changed for registered and logged-in users by going to the Members -> Prefs -> Site Style option and selecting your desired Navigation style. (Page here: »/prefs)

The default Vertical Menu Style:
Click for full size

The Horizontal Tabbed Style:
Click for full size

The selected style will be used throughout the site.

(Note: The images are not quite current, but the basic info is the same.)

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
  • Not sure where to ask: Can someone please tell me what the 'red flag' with the number '1' means on the horizontal toolbar means when I log into the site? The 'red flag' w/number '1' is just to right of the 5-point star...thanks. Have A Healthy, Prosperous Day! --- rob

If this FAQ entry appeared unexpectedly in a new window when you clicked a link it MAY BE because JAVASCRIPT is not enabled for your browser (or you clicked so quickly, javascript support had not finished loading even though the page appeared). Please read on:

dslreports.com uses Javascript for some convenience functions. A test page is at http://www.dslreports.com/cookies where you can verify your browser (or browser extensions) are not blocking any functionality.

As always, we recommend a current browser. The latest release of Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera or Internet Explorer.

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
  • It looks like this can also happen when you use e.g. the middle mouse button in an effort to open a link in a new tab?

  • Only fools use javascript instead of python. USCERT banished Javascript 12 years ago due to severe security flaws.

  • Thanks. You made it easy to get running after an hour of messing around with it !!!

  • JS very well is enanbled!

  • From http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13763, brought me to this FAQ page (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15562) instead of opening a Feedback panel like this. Also, »miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ (Argonne, IL) yields "Firefox can't find the server at miranda.ctd.anl.gov."

Site users now have the ability to give "kudos" to other members, via the member's profile page.

Clicking on the link gives:

Receiving kudos results in this (a system message at the top of your screen notifying you of the kudos sent):

Following the link takes you to your page where you view the kudos sent:

The recipient clicks on the "approve" link to accept the kudos. Even after approving it, the recipient may still delete the kudos. In any event, whether the kudos receives approval or not, there is no further confirmation of any action.

In some instances, you may see the following error or notice message. It is self-explanatory:

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
  • How can I see what Kudos I have given and received via a link on the site? This explains Kudos, but doesn't say how to see what Kudos were given by an account for example.

You may be reading this FAQ entry if your account has been banned from using the site. Nearly every ban is because of content that has been posted that moderators consider does not abide by the site rules.

Permanent account bans are a last resort, after warnings and temporary bans have been ignored. We may also ban accounts we strongly suspect are duplicate or controlled by the same individual that been banned previously. Permanent bans can only be given after a randomly selected group of moderators agree, in the majority, that a ban is warranted.

Ignoring these: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/648 guidelines on community conduct can result in banning.

Since permanent bans are a last resort, they are rarely reversed. If you believe a mistake has been made please use the site contact page.

If your IP is believed to be running malicious software, for example to auto-post spam or be running a bot, then it may also be banned.
