3.0 Moding Mafia Games
1.0 Introduction1. Have rules 2. Have a moderator AND 3. Have a end goal We just started to try this type of "Mafia" game: Bounty Hunter....Take 1.... Rules Basic Normal Rules •Do Not Edit your posts...this will result in a mod kill. •Do Not give anyone thumbs up....this will result in a mod kill. •If you are not allowed private communication, then you are not allowed private communication. Breaking this rule will result in, you guessed it, a mod kill. •There will be no postings of IM's....this will result in, all together now, a mod kill. •Keep it respectful and nice. No personal bashing of any one player. •No aiding a player in his/her strategy after you have died. Not only is this frowned upon, but will result in a permanent ban from any game that I mod. Lynching •There is no vote to lynch. Just a vote to go to night. Night Actions •Everyone - Follow Player - Shows one piece of clothing worn. •Everyone - Avoid Player - If that person is following you they will not show a piece of clothing for you. •Bounty Hunter - Ready Gun - This has to be done before he can use his gun and takes a whole night. They may not follow or avoid anyone if they do this. •Bounty Hunter - Shoot Gun - Gun most be readied before he can shoot it. They may not follow or avoid anyone if they do this. •Sheriff - Ready Gun - This has to be done before he can use his gun and takes a whole night. They may not follow or avoid anyone if they do this. •Sheriff - Shoot Gun - Gun must be readied the night before. They may not follow or avoid anyone if they do this. •Whore - Distract - This keeps whoever they target from doing anything that night. They may not follow or avoid anyone if they do this. •Bartender - Happy Hour - Makes someone drunk. If that person follows someone they get an item on the list. If they try and kill anyone, they will miss and the action will be reported to all the players the next day. This will take one of their two night actions allowing them to follow or avoid a player, but not both. 4 Ways for the game to end. •Bounty Hunter kills his target Class - He has to load his gun the night before and can only shoot it if he is not following someone or avoiding someong. •Sheriff kills the Bounty Hunter - He has to load his gun the night before and can only shoot it if he is not following someone or avoiding someong. •Whore and Bartender agree to kill the Bounty Hunter - The Whore and Bartender can send me PM's saying who they would like to vote for. If they both vote for the same person, that person is "lynched". If it is the wrong person (not the Bounty Hunter) than it's game over. • If the bounty hunter misses their target or the town miss-kills then the side that made the mistake loses. Role IM's Bounty Hunter You are the Bounty Hunter. Your mission in this game is to kill the **************. Remember that before using your gun you have to load it and that takes a full night. Your normal night actions are Avoid a player and Follow a player. Loading your gun takes both turns. Sheriff You are the sheriff. Your mission in this game is to find and kill the bounty hunter. Remember that before using your gun you have to load it and that takes a full night. Your normal night actions are Avoid a player and Follow a player. When you do choose to load your gun, you may not do either of those. Whore You are the Whore. Your mission in this game is to help find the Bounty Hunter and get him killed. Your normal two night actions are to Follow a player and Avoid a player. You have a night action that allows you to distract a player but that takes both of your night actions up meaning you may not follow or avoid a player. At anytime if you think you know who the Bounty Hunter is, you may send me an IM to vote for that person. If the bartender sends me the same person an in IM, that person is immediately killed. If it's wrong, and you kill the sheriff, it's game over and the Bounty Hunter wins. Bartender You are the bartender. Your mission in this games it to help find the Bounty Hunter and get him killed. Your normal two night actions are to Follow a player and Avoid a player. You have another night action that allows you to get one player drunk. That will take one of your two night actions. If you get someone drunk the following will happen: If they try to follow someone they get an item not on the list. (hey, they were drunk) If they try to kill anyone they will miss and the action will be reported to all the players the next day. (Player tried to make a kill) At anytime if you think you know who the Bounty Hunter is, you may send me an IM to vote for that person. If the whore sends me the same person an in IM, that person is immediately killed. If it's wrong, and you kill the sheriff, it's game over and the Bounty Hunter wins. Concept and Rules shamelessly --

2.1 Game Basics
Usually the game is set in a town that discovers a mafia presence. The game takes place in two phases, a day phase and a night phase. During the day phase the town (an angry lynch mob) select one player to lynch. They are lynching other players trying to eliminate the mafia. During the night phase the mafia kill one player. They are killing other players trying to eliminate the town. Unfortunately for the town, good individuals do not know the identity of each other; whereas the mafia know who each other are. The mafia can plan and scheme in private or public communication, but the town may only use public communication to converse. I suggest watching the beginers guide in the helpful links FAQ (»Pub Games FAQ »Helpful Mafia links ).
by Dezbend General Rules: 1) DO NOT EDIT. Editing posts screws up the vote tallies. Action will be taken against people who edit posts, up to and including unfortunate accident. 2) Day and Night phases may or may not have time limits on them. This all depends on the type of game and who is moderating it. 3) Any person can claim to be any role if they wish. Lying about your role is certainly permitted. Keep in mind that you may run the risk of getting killed if you're a role that threatens the other team. 4) If you need to quit, let the moderator know A.S.A.P. We'll try to find someone to replace your role. Do not suicide in the thread, please. Communication Rules: 1) If your role does not allow it, NO PRIVATE COMMUNICATION. If you are contacted privately by any person with information or analysis about the game, let me know and the player will suffer an unfortunate accident. 2) Do not thumb posts of other players at any time! Contact me if someone thumbs your post. Anyone found thumbing will suffer an unfortunate accident. 3) If you are dead, you are permitted to make (1) one farewell post. Your post cannot contain any information you've learned, nor any analysis of things that have taken place. Do not say anything like "Check out who I had been suspicious of" or anything similar. This farewell post should be more of a "Darn, Go Town/mafia"-type post. This is perhaps the most-violated rule. Violation of this rule may result in banning from future games, so please, keep the death posts light. This rule extends to mafia as well! Dead mafia cannot assist in any manner with analysis, decisions, or any other thing. No communication is permitted between dead mafia and living mafia, aside from the farewell post previously mentioned. 4) Living mafia members can communicate privately at any time, day or night, through private messages or the private forum which they will be given. 5) No posting in the thread by any person during the Night phase. Violators will suffer an unfortunate accident. Night phase begins when the moderator posts saying so (following a lynch). Lynch Rules: 1) Each player may submit a lynch vote in the thread like this, in bold: Vote: playername. You can also unvote by: Unvote: playername. Bolding is done like this: [ b ] Vote: playername [ / b ] without the spaces inside the brackets. Please bold all votes. Only bolded votes will be counted. A simple majority will cause a lynch, and the player's role will be revealed by the moderator. 2) When a simple majority is reached, the lynch is locked in and we enter Twilight. Subsequent unvotes cannot reverse a lynch that reached majority, even if the moderator has not yet stated the death. 3) A majority choosing to Vote: No Lynch will end the day without a lynch and we will proceed to night. In the event of a deadlocked vote (equal number of town and mafia), mafia wins. The same is true for the Serial Killer. If at any time two people are left and one is the Serial Killer, the Serial Killer wins. **Because each game has a different setup, the rules tend to change from game to game. Some moderators enforce the day phase time limit, while others do not. The moderator of a game should include any different rules if not the above rules. If you are confused about any rules for a particular game, please IM the moderator of that game. The Forum moderator will not have the answers.**
by Akasha As the game progresses the day/night phases take less time (fewer people left alive means reaching a consensus is easier). Day 1 usually lasts 48-72 hours and subsequent days may take 24-48 hours, with the final day or two being over in just a few hours each.
by Dezbend A Day Phase is the name that is given to the time frame in which a player can post in the game thread. During this time, a player can post anything within the rules of the game while also adhering to the rules of the site. The site rules can be found here . A Day Phase may or may not have a time limit. The moderator of the game will decide that. Night Phase A Night Phase is the name given to the time in which the players are not allowed to post in the game thread. However, depending on what role you have, you may still be able to privately communicate. This time may or may not be limited. The moderator of the game will decide that. Twilight Twilight is the name given to the time after the town has reached a majority. During this time, some moderators prefer that you do not post any strategy while others do not seem to mind. It is also the time between the Day Phase and the Night Phase. Shortly after twilight has been established, the moderator of the game will post a lynch scene or a no-lynch scene and then announce that "It is now Night". FoS FoS is just an abbreviation for Finger of Suspicion. Some players will use this when trying to communicate to other players who they are suspicious of. Lynch or Lose Lynch or Lose is when the town finds themselves having to lynch a mafia or lose the game. This usually happens when there are only 2 (or less) more townsfolk than members of the mafia. The situation in which a lynch or lose happens could vary depending on what roles are in play. WIFOM This is an abbreviation for Wine In Front Of Me. Players will use this when trying to describe an argument similar to one seen in the movie The Princess Bride . The scene in the movie is also known as the "Battle of Wits" scene. This is the clip of the argument. OMGUS "Oh, my god, you suck!" This is usually said before a retaliatory vote. An OMGUS vote is poor strategy as it does not use any logic or reasoning to determine the person being voted against is indeed mafia. Mafia members may use OMGUS votes to throw a random vote out without raising suspicion. Town players may use it in frustration, or in lieu of a random vote. L-1, L-2, etc. The "L" in this term refers to lynch. The -1 or -2 denotes how many votes a person is away from being lynched. Therefore saying "Yock is L-1" means that Yock is one vote away from being lynched. HWSIDI "He who smelt it dealt it." This is an acronym of the popular, although not entirely agreed upon, thought that the first person to mention a role is either that role or knows that it exists within the current game.
by Akasha Anonymous users may participate in discussion, but to play the game you must be a registered member of DSLreports.com. We encourage you to register as a premium member (costs $10) to support the site, but a free account is all that is necessary to play Mafia.
2.2 Game Strategies
Mafia members like to add their vote on top of others (typically they try to avoid voting first or last so as to not draw attention). This is called bandwagoning. Some people believe the third and fourth votes on a bandwagon are the most suspect. Mafia members are wishy-washy in their voting, but then again some people are wishy-washy regardless of their role. Mafia members sometimes make mistakes. Keep a close eye out for statements like “we killed the serial killer…” (if the SK was hit by the mafia) A pro-town player would say “they killed the serial killer…” Beware of people who seem to have too much inside information. I am suspicious when someone says they are sure so and so is pro-town. To be sure they either have to be the cop or mafia. Comments on night actions often come from mafia. Either they congratulate the doctor on a job well done or they complain about how losing the cop is so bad for the town. Mafia will draw false logical conclusions, use a WIFOM argument, or ask for extensive explanations, feign not understanding what is going on, or play a gambit (this is my favorite thing to do when I am mafia). Although mafia sometimes do vote against one another, watching who is voting together often will net you a mafia member or two.
by Dezbend Don’t role claim unless necessary – there may not be a doc! Don’t be overly aggressive before you role claim. You don’t want to draw any more attention to yourself than a townie does. But in the same light, don't be a wall flower. Lack of participation may be a tip off to the mafia that you have a power role and are trying to avoid attention. Don't ever, ever, ever, ever mention the cop in passing. "Well the cop should probably..." is a dead giveaway that the person is a cop. This is my most reliable method for finding the cop when I am mafia. Its amazing how often a cop will say something like this. thanks, AmertitecTech In general, you should avoid lying about your role. Now on to some specific play: Day 1 – don’t be afraid to vote against someone. You have no information, neither does anyone else, don’t look for concrete reasons: there are none. Being too timid with your vote is something the mafia is looking for. Night 1 – I would investigate someone who has participated less. Mafia may be trying to fly under the radar, also, someone who is talking more is more likely to be caught by discerning townsfolk. Go after the quiet ones. Day 2 – You either got a pro-town result or found your first mafia member. If you got a mafia member, go back to day one and see if he/she slipped up anywhere (it will be easier to tell now that you know for sure that he/she is bad). Vote against him/her using the information you found from day one that made you suspicious of him/her. Do not reveal you are the cop if you can get the town to lynch without the extra weight of a cop role claim. If you found a pro-town member, don’t worry. 2 people are dead now, leaving only 5. You know 2 are good (you and whoever you investigated), leaving you a 2 in 3 chance of voting against a bad guy. Again don’t be shy in your vote. Day 3 – if you made it to day 3 the town must have lynched a bad guy. Time to role claim! Share everything you know up to this point. Who is good/who is bad. This coupled with the voting history should be enough to figure out the remaining mafia member.
by Dezbend If you are one vote away from being lynched you may want to reveal your role. If you are pro-town do not lie about your role (for instance if you are a townie about to be lynched, don’t claim cop – the real cop may counter claim. This gives the mafia more information to base their night kill on). If you are the cop, you may want to role claim once you discover a member of the mafia. If it is early in the game you may wait a day or two to get a few more results first, but don’t wait to long (the mafia might kill you before you can speak). When the cop claims, he should share all the information he has. At the end of the game knowing who is good can be just as important as knowing who is bad. If you are the doc, you should avoid role claiming at all costs. Mafia want to try to follow the same rules as townsfolk, so that they do not stick out in any way. However, mafia might claim a power role to see if someone will counter claim. Sometimes sacrificing one member of the mafia to discover who the cop is is worth it!
For example if there are 4 remaining players and 1 is mafia a no lynch followed by a mafia kill would leave 3 live players and 1 mafia. These are better odds to find the remaining mafia member with. If the town had voted off the wrong person the first night instead of voting no lynch and the mafia made a successful kill; there would only be 2 people left alive resulting in a mafia win.
by Dezbend 2.3 Variants
There are 4 different set-ups that may be used (usually chosen at random) either: 1 Cop, 1 Doc, 3 townies, 2 mafia 1 Cop, 4 townies, 2 mafia 1 Doc, 4 townies, 2 mafia 5 townies, 2 mafia Another unique quality of this setup is that on Day 1 and only Day 1, if a townie is lynched, that townie gets a one shot chance (like becoming a vigilante) to make a kill. If the Godfather is killed in this way, the town does not automatically win. Mafia win when there is at least an equal amount of mafia and townies and the town does not have a vigilante kill remaining.
Shirts is typically a three player game where there is an "attribute" assigned to each player. The attribute is arbitrary and typically used by the game Mod in the intro text. In a three player game the roles are as follows. Each player knows their own attribute. This might be the color of their hat. One player is given the role of a sane witness. This player player knows the killers attribute (i.e. the killer wore a green hat) One player is given the role of a delusional witness. This player thinks he knows the killers attribute, but in fact knows the sane witnesses' attribute. The third is the mafia, and knows his/her own attribute. Strategy Optimally this is a 2 phase game, phase one being the claiming, phase two being the swing vote. Like a Dethy game, claiming is key. A reasonably played game will result in one witness and the mafia trying to swing the third players vote. A first vote by the mafia is poor play as it will allow one of the witnesses to vindicate themselves by not hammering the vote. Common Mistakes Given the game starts out in a Lyol (Lynch or lose), an informed vote is crucial. (see strategy)
1 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Roleblocker, 7 Townies. 2 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Roleblocker, 1 Sane Cop, 1 Doctor, 5 Townies. 3 2 Mafia Goons, 1 Doctor, 6 Townies. 4 2 Mafia Goons, 1 Sane Cop, 6 Townies. by yock Dead Men Tell No Tales: Night Kills take precedence. If a player investigates someone who is killed at night, they get no return information. "Informed" comes from: Mafia is given a list of which player is which flavor of cop (sane, insane, paranoid, naive). No Night Kill Night "1". Day 1 is historically only used for "check in" and it is asked that ALL players (not a simple majority) vote night.
by drew 2.4 Mafia RolesAn advantage of being mafia is that you are allowed to have private communicate with your "family" or other members of the mafia. by Akasha by Dezbend "You are the Mafia's Role Blocker. You are also known as a Prostitute. You dress up in that pretty little skirt that barely covers anything and those stiletto heals and you work the town. You like to find some poor townie who has better things to do and keep them busy all night long. Your godfather is Rook008. Your other crone is Dezbend and they are the Mafia Janitor. You win with the mafia."
by muzscman 2.5 Town rolesby Dezbend by Dezbend by Dezbend Discovering the SK is much harder than catching the mafia because he acts alone. Many games with a SK also have a psychiatrist who can cure the SK, turning him into a vanilla townie.

Yes. Anyone can moderate a game of mafia. However, it is recommended (not mandatory) that you have played several games first before trying to tackle moderating a game yourself. Moderating a game requires knowledge of the inner workings of the game. You need to be sure to balance the sides (Pro-Town & Anti-Town) and sometimes that is not so easy when you have not played enough games yourself. If you are interested in trying your hand at moderating a game, simply post a sign up thread in the forum using the [Signup] tag, the game number and name (if you choose to name it) and wait until the required number of players have shown interest in your game. It is not mandatory, but it is helpful upon reaching the chosen amount of players if you also include a link to the game thread in the sign up thread.
1) Post Vote Counts (Unless decided by the mod to not be done..) 2) Post day/night text. 3) The occasional Mod Kill for any number of reasons (editing a post, not following the rules..) 4) Helping the thread along if it has stalled for a lengthy period. The mod should avoid helping any of the players along. There should be no clarifications. If a role pm was messed up, it is up to the mod and the player to resolve it through PM's.
