1.1 Notes on Specific Providers

·Provider Issues: I suspect my ISP does not work with the Network Adaptor
·Provider Issues: AT&T Broadband
·Provider Issues: COMCAST
·Provider issues: Rogers
·Bellsouth / Alcatel USB modem
·Provider issues: AOL Broadband
All providers have some or ALL subscribers connecting Ok. There are a few problem providers (AOL Highspeed, Rogers).. see the other FAQ entries for info on those.

Otherwise, for various reasons, your own setup may make it harder to connect. For example, your highspeed modem is USB based and has no ethernet port (solution? find out what model ether modem your ISP wants to sell you, and then go on ebay and buy one). Or, your cable provider DHCP servers will not allocate an IP address to your PS2, because they have locked it to your PC only (solution? go out and buy a router like a linksys, d-link, netgear or zyxel, then connect your modem to that, and hook up the PS2 behind the router). Or you are using AOL HIGHSPEED without a home router (solution? see previous point, or, use Windows ICS and look at the OTHER FAQ question on AOL HIGHSPEED).

And the bad news is .. for SOME areas of the AT&T broadband network .. AT&T locks its cable modems via hardware ethernet address to whatever they are plugged into when first installed .. so you cannot switch back and forth between PC and laptop or PC and PS2 without paying them more money and calling them.. or faking the ethernet hardware address. (something you cannot do with the PS2 adapter).

You can, however, get a home router such as a linksys or Zyxel, lock to that by calling AT&T support, then sprout your network (PC, PS2 etc) off of the router.

If your area of AT&T broadband allows you to change devices without issue, then using the "automatically detect" setting should work fine. Power cycle your cable modem while it is connected to the PS2, if you have any problems with this.

You do NOT need to enter a username and password into the PS2 in order to get online.

For a directly connected setup (modem and PC to be changed to modem and PS2) you need to either release the IP address, or, power cycle the modem in order to force it to release the IP. Otherwise DHCP will not hand out a new address for you (unless you have signed up for more than one simultaneous DHCP address as allowable).

There are two possible problems with Rogers and DIRECT CONNECT to the PS2 Network Adaptor. The first problem is the modem may be locked to your PC hardware address.. so it refuses to deal with the PS2 adaptor. This may be solved by power cycling the modem before attempting a connection test from the PS2.

The second problem is that SOME of Rogers DHCPD servers are refusing to speak to the PS2 Adaptor, for some reason. This problem is insurmountable unless Rogers gets to the source of the incompatibility and fixes it.

Another thing to try is to provide the PS2 network adaptor setup with your computer HOSTNAME, which maybe in the form of cr-xxxx, (please view your windows network properties page to find this out). Then AUTO may work.

Last solution is to get a home ROUTER then use that, many Rogers users are on Linksys or other home routers, and any equipment connected behind the router works just fine .. including the PS2 adaptor.

Good luck.

This modem is not easily put into a network.

April 2003 update: According to user 'ahneg', AOL have now added basic PPPoE support to their network (for DSL and DIALUP only -- not CABLE). From your PS2 network adaptor setup screen, you can pick PPPoE connection, input your username as 'user@aol.com' and your AOL password, and you should be able to get logged right in! You could create your own ps2 screen name in your AOL account for this process, so you can still use your PC as well!

Older information on tricking AOL via the PC is here ...this thread ... but try the PPPoE method first..
