You can register for an account using your mobile phone. Unfortunately the google folks don't allow new registration without some sort of verification.
If you prefer not to use your phone then you can sign up for status updates on the GMAIL project here: »gmail.google.com/gmail/help/about.html#email

Because we're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test, we don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available.
As we make way for more accounts, we may periodically allow you to invite others to join Gmail. When we do so, you will see an invitation link in your inbox.
If you do not see the invitation link, that means that we are unable to provide you with additional invitations at this time.
To invite someone, click on the 'Invite a friend to join Gmail!' link in your inbox. You will then be asked to provide an email address and a personalized message to your invitee.
The person you invite will be sent a message that includes a link to join Gmail. That registration link will be valid for three weeks and can be used to create only one account.
Should your invitee have problems creating a Gmail account, please let us know by clicking on the 'contact us' link in the grey box below.
Please note that the link may not always be available. When you are allowed to invite others to join Gmail, the number of invitations that you can send will be indicated at the top of the page after you click on the link. Once you have used all of those invitations, we will not be able to immediately issue more invitations.
Note: GMAIL will from time to time empower you to invite others to join. The number of invitations will be random, and the people you invite may also be given the ability to invite others. This is not always the case, however.

You have to depend on the kindness of others.
It seems that folks who have the accounts (and invites) enjoy posting all over the place about it. Doing a quick google search on `gmail extra invites' will return more results than you would believe. Check out the hits that come from blogs. Often times when someone has extras, they post about it there. You just might get lucky.
Another possible source is the GMAILForums Website.

This information straight from the GMAIL Support team:
To fix this problem, please close all open browser windows and disable any
Internet Security software, such as Norton Internet Security. Open up a
new browser window, and adjust your privacy and security preferences. To
adjust these preferences in Internet Explorer, please follow the steps
below:
1. Click the 'Tools' menu at the top of your browser, and select 'Internet
Options.'
2. Click the 'Privacy' tab at the top of the dialog box, and move the
slider to 'Low.'
3. Click the 'Edit' button, and enter 'google.com' into the 'Address of
Web site' field.
4. Select 'Accept' to override the handling of particular cookies.
5. Click the 'Security' tab at the top of the dialog box, and change the
'Security level for this zone' to 'Low.'
6. Click 'OK.'
Next, please clear your browser's cache. To clear your browser's cache in
Internet Explorer, please follow the steps below:
1. Click the 'Tools' menu at the top of your browser, and select 'Internet
Options.'
2. Click the 'General' tab at the top of the dialog box.
3. Click 'Delete Files' under 'Temporary Internet files.'
4. Select 'Delete all offline content' by checking the box.
5. Click 'OK.'
Finally, open a new browser window and log back in to Gmail. Please try
accessing your 'Invite a friend' link again.
If you decide to turn your Internet Security back on, you should be able
to access your invitation link if you login to Gmail from the secure
interface. Secure HTTPS access is available via
»»https://gmail.google.com; simply change the URL in your browser before
logging in.

There could be quite a number of reasons for this.
1. Are they being sent to a Yahoo!, MSN or Hotmail account?
•There have been sporadic reports from users that the invites are being sent to the spam or bulk mail folders. Check there first.
2. Did you get a bounced message?
•If the message was rejected for some reason, you should receive a bounced message notification.
Another solution:
•Look in your Sent Mail folder, find the invitation, copy and paste the link into a new message and viola!

There was a site, called The GMail Spooler that had over 400,000 invites to give away (thanks to the generosity of others) but I received word today (6/7/05) that Google has asked them to cease and desist:

I have gotten the word from Gmail's Product Manager that my service is no longer tolerable. At midnight PDT June 7th, 2005, this service was disabled. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who contributed to this service. Your generosity helped out a vast number of people and for that you should be proud.
The gmail spooler email account is now deactivated and any mail sent to it will bounce. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me a line: email@isnoop.net
