Usenet is a worldwide-distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by Subject. "Articles" or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software -- these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks. Some newsgroups are "moderated"; in these newsgroups, the articles are first sent to a moderator for approval before appearing in the newsgroup. Usenet is available on a wide variety of computer systems and networks, but the bulk of modern Usenet traffic is transported over either the Internet or UUCP.

You will need a binary newsreader before you will be able to download from Usenet. There are many available but the two common ones used are Grabbit and Newsbin Pro. The first is a simple to use free newsreader while the latter is by far the best binary newsreader available but must be purchased.
Grabbit is available at »www.shemes.com/
Newsbin Pro is available at »www.newsbin.com/

You will first want to contact your ISP and see if Newsgroups are offered to you. Also check to see that alt.binaries are not blocked. All of the newsgroups that begin with Alt.Binaries will contain files in them. If you are allowed access to Newsgroups and alt.binaries are not blocked then you are in luck. Your ISP will provide you with the addresses of the news servers, which you will then have to configure in your binary newsreader. If you have to use a pay service then you will have plenty of choices to make regarding your provider. A few to look at are.

Thousands upon thousands of posts are made to news servers each day. Retention is how long the posts are stored by the news servers. More active newsgroups will generally have a shorter retention, as they will have to make room for the amount of posts made daily. The provider you pick will have different retention times for their newsgroups.

There is no search engine per say that will show you every post made to Usenet but there are websites that can assist you with what has been posted. Keep in mind that the sites will only show what other users have reported so there will be much more posted than reported. The key here is to register with the sites and also report what you find posted.

You will find that the newsgroups name will contain files that coincide with the newsgroups name. An example would be alt.binaries.vcd, which will contain files that once reconstructed, would create a vcd. Some others to visit are
alt.binaries.vcd alt.binaries.svcd alt.binaries.vcd.highspeed alt.binaries.vcd.repost alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1950’s alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960’s alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1970’s alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1980’s alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1990’s alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000’s

The posts made to Usenet will be broken down into chunks. Each post will be the same size except the last post and each will need to be downloaded so that you can process the rar files. These posts will appear as filename.r01, filename.r02 and so on. You will also see posts that appear as filename.p01. These are par files. Par files are used to reconstruct the rar files that are missing from the archive. For every rar you are missing you can substitute one par file. For example if you downloaded 50 rar files and two are incomplete or corrupt you could then download two par files and still be able to reconstruct the archive. FSRaid is a data recovery tool that uses par files.

Okay, here's the deal.
In Newsleecher, you have a file with a certain number of parts.

Here is a shot of Quickpar

As you can see, there are 1,145 blocks total in all of the files.

There are 120 "recovery" blocks available in all of the pars. (In the file name of the .par2, the number after the + indicates how many recovery blocks there are.)
So, as it's been for me when downloading from usenet, I'll end up with a file that has 1 missing part, that'll equate (usually) to 1-3 blocks needed. If I have 3 incomplete files each needing 3 blocks, only 1 par2 file with say 15 "recovery" blocks is needed to fix those files.
