1.0 General Information

Forum Guidelines

•Do not "hijack" someone else's help thread by jumping in with your problem. Start your own thread about your problem. This makes it easier for the Techs to keep track of "Help Requests".

•Keep your issues to one thread for best assistance and so as not to duplicate member efforts. Give enough information. Give some time for a reply. "Please" and "thank you" may seem like old fashioned concepts, but we like them.

•Please Note: Do not post a direct link to ANY file in this forum. You can post a link to a page that contains a link to a file, but NO DIRECT LINKS.

•Otherwise the existing site Rules on Posting and Terms of Use pretty much cover it.

•If you have any questions, please ask your friendly forum moderator.

Are there any DSL Extreme employees that participate in the forum?

Yes.

The following member(s) are official DSLExtreme representatives that frequently monitor the forums and are available to answer your questions.

dslx_gm See Profile - George is the General Manager of DSLExtreme.

If Verizon/AT&T has turned me down for DSL, will DSLX be able to provide it?

Most likely, no.

You are probably too far from the CO/RT. DSLX provides service over Verizon/AT&T lines and the same distance restrictions apply.

My contract is up. What happens now?

Thirty days prior to the end of your one year contract, you will receive a notice giving the option to renew. If you choose not to renew you will be placed on a month-to-month account at a slightly higher rate. If you choose to renew you are typically given a rate that is around the promo rate or slightly higher. The price depends on the packages and network provider that you are on. You will be able to see the pricing under the members section by selecting modify subscription 30 days prior to your anniversary date.

These threads talk about this:

»What happens after the year's up?

»Re: What is the pricing?

What is the DSL Extreme website?

»https://www.dslextreme.com is the offical DSL Extreme website.

What modems will work with DSLX?

As a general rule of thumb any ADSL (or ADSL2 that supports ADSL) modem will work with DSLX service. They prefer modems that come pre-configured as transparent bridges but modem that are functioning routers or wireless routers can work as well. »Re: list of compatible DSL modems/routers

In general DSLX service will work with any ADSL modem that supports RFC1483 / Bridge Mode and DMT (g.DMT) VP set to 0 VC set to 35. If your modem worked with another companies service like AT&T or Verizon, it is likely that it will work with DSLExtreme unless it has been locked to only work on their network.

You can find a list of approved modems on their website in the Knowledge base support area.

Approved Modem List
Speedstream 5360 modem

You can find a list of non-compliant modems here:

2.0 Service Questions

Does DSL Extreme provide service to my area?

You can use the pre-qualify tool on the DSL Extreme website or call 1-800-774-3379 to find out if DSLX is available in your area.

If I move within my contract period, am I charged for breaking my contract?

If you move your service to a new location you have the option to:

•1. Keep your existing contract and pay a $60 transfer fee
•2. Renew your contract for another year with no transfer fee

Where can I find prices for DSLX plans?

You can go here or to »www.dslextreme.com/dsl to find current package prices.

Why should I choose DSLX over AT&T/Verizon?

2.1 AT&T Specific Questions

Do I have to have local phone service for DSL Extreme?

AT&T doesn't offer unbundled service at this time. Based on recent laws they will be required to offer it by the end of the year. DSL Extreme may be able to offer it at that time.

As said by dslx_gm See Profile in this thread:

»perhaps silly question re: unbundled DSL w/ DSLX

2.2 Verizon Specific Questions

Does DSL Extreme offer dry DSL in Verizon Territory?

Yes, they do. Activating a dry DSL loop is a very lengthy process and can take 3-4 weeks.

The easiest way is to drop your phone line and keep your DSL with no downtime in Verizon areas. DSLX does not charge an additional $5 per month like Verizon does. At least not at this time.

This is per dslextreme See Profile from this post.

3.0 Included Features Questions

Am I allowed to network my computers without paying extra money per month?

Yes.

You can use a router without having to pay extra money for IPs or violating DSLX terms of service.

Can I run servers under the DSL Extreme AUP/TOS?

Yes.

You can run your own HTTP/FTP or any server you want (assuming it's not against the law).

This is a main difference between DSLX, SBC/Verizon and some cable providers.

I heard DSL Extreme gives you more than 1 internet IP. Is that true?

Yes.

Static plans usually come with 3 IPs and dynamic IP plans come with 5.

You can check exactly how many IPs come with your plan by looking on your bill or contacting DSL Extreme.

Does DSL Extreme offer newsgroup access?

Yes.

DSL Extreme gives every user 2 connections at 256Kbps (Total of 512Kbps, when using both connections) to Supernews.

Does DSL Extreme provide email accounts and personal webspace?

Yes.

You can make up to 10 different email accounts (each with 100MB of storage). Every mail account also comes with its own personal webpage.

Does DSL Extreme provider spam/virus filters with the email services?

Yes.

If you'd like to turn the spam filter off, you can do that also.

5.0 Setup

Do I need to install filters on my line for the DSL to work properly?

Maybe.

If you have a dedicated line running to the MPOE for your DSL connection, then you don't need filters.

But if you plug into a regular phone jack in your home, which shares the line with other devices, you will need to install the DSL filters on every phone jack in the house.

5.1 Advanced Setup

Can I get custom reverse DNS for my IP(s)?

Yes.

The reverse DNS tool, which can be found under the My Account section of DSLX's website, allows clients with static IP addresses to easily manage and change the reverse DNS record for their static IP addresses. This feature is for FREE to all static IP clients!

To manage your Reverse DNS simply login to the My Account section of our website and select the “Details” button next to your static IP address. From there select the edit button to modify your reverse DNS entry. It takes 24 to 48 hours for the change to take effect.

The reverse record is what your IP resolves to when you do a look up on your IP. If you are running a mail server you want to have your IP address reverse to your domain name. Often times spam checkers will check to see if the reverse record matches the forward record. If it does not the checker will mark the message as spam. There is some more information in the Reverse DNS Wiki.

How can I add IPs to my account?

Go to »»https://secure.dslextreme.com/addip/

Be sure to stay within your account limits, or you'll be charged extra money per month for every IP you go over.

It discusses different options. Either plugging every user into a hub/switch and having them use PPoE software, or using 2 different routers plugged into the hub/switch.

How can I share my internet connection to multiple computers?

You will need to obtain a broadband router.

Information on setup can be found here.

How do I take advantage of the multiple static IPs DSLX offers?

Either plug every user into a swtich, or plug different routers into the switch. Then follow the regular static IP setup instructions.

What are the VPI/VCI modem settings for DSLX?

0/35 are the valid VPI/VCI settings for both AT&T and Verizon areas.

6.0 Account Troubles

I just got my DSL service activated. Why is it way under the advertised speed?

If you live in an AT&T area, your line is subject to the "ramp-up" period. This can take up to 10 buisness days. During this time, you NEED leave the modem on for the ramp-up to work properly. For the first 10 days the modem is testing to see what the highest sync rate it can hold is.

Some other FAQs that talk about this:

»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »I just had my SBC Ameritech DSL connected, why are the speeds so low?

»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »New & upgraded customers read this about speeds. (Ramp-up)

I'm trying to send mail via a third-party provider, but it's not working!?

That's because DSL Extreme blocks outgoing connections on port 25 to prevent spam.

To get rid of this problem, change the outgoing mail server on your connection to "smtp.dslextreme.com" and use your DSLX mail account login info (xxxxx@dslextreme.com) along with your password.

If you'd like the outgoing 25 block to go away, go here and you can fill out the "SMTP Filter Removal" form.

I've tried everything and I still can't get it to work, what do I do?

You can speak to DSL Extreme regarding DSL problems many ways:

Phone: (866)-491-7221
Forum Support: »DSL Extreme

(Side note: Never post your full address/phone number, if you choose to post in the forum (unless directly IM'ing a DSLX employee))

My DSL seems really slow, how do I check what speed I'm getting?

DSL Extreme has their own speedtest site. Go to »speedtest.dslextreme.com and choose either "Northern California" or "Southern California", according to where you live.

If you're getting above 80% of the advertised speed, then you're likely OK. Otherwise, try troubleshooting to figure out why the line isn't working properly.

My modem keeps losing sync, how do I fix it?

Most likely there is static/noise on your line.

Make sure you've installed filters on every phone jack that is being used. Devices that need filters include phones, alarm systems, TV systems (ones that use a phone jack to dial PPV).

Another solution may be installing a splitter at the MPOE. (See /faq/10443 for more info)

Who do I contact regarding Billing errors/troubles?

Vist the DSL Extreme Billing Support Page.

You can contact them by phone:

Billing Dept. Hours:
M-F: 6AM-6PM Sat. 9AM-4PM
Phone: 1-800-774-3379

Or by the tools built into the Billing Support page

7.0 Misc Info

Can I upgrade my package online?

Yes. Go here and you can fill out the "Upgrade/Downgrade Form".

(Note: Read the bottom of the page: "You may not qualify for all subscriptions above. Subcriptions listed are for your entire Network, all changes are pending qualification.")

Does DSL Extreme have a network status page?

Does DSL Extreme have a referral program?

Yes.

Vist the referral program page for more info.

Basically, when someone signs up for DSL Extreme, there's an option for a referers username. (Make sure to give them your main username, not sub-account)

Your account will be credited for the ammount the refere's plan costs per month. Example: If Bob tells Joe about DSL Extreme, and Joe signs up for a $30 a month plan, Bob will get $30 credit to his account.

You should see the credit in the following billing cycle. If the credit seems to have not gone through, contact DSL Extreme to see what happened.

Does DSL Extreme hosts game servers?

Yes they do.

Check out »games.dslextreme.com for the full listing of games hosted by DSL Extreme.

Also, check it out for the latest gaming news.

How can I access my account info from the web?

You can go to »www.dslextreme.com/access. Your login and password is your main DSLX user account.

Is there a general DSL FAQ available?

Yes.

/faq/faq

Which speed test is the most accurate?

You may see links to various speed test servers on DSL Reports, but the most accurate indication of your DSL sync rate would be a test to the DSL Extreme speed test server. Make sure to choose the proper speed test server for your area. Using these servers will typicall avoid inconsistent results from other servers due to factors outside the DSLX network (routing, congestion, remote host load, etc). It's always a good idea to compare results from DSLX speedtest servers and others, however, as any one server's speedtest could be misleading.

Where can I find DSL Extreme phone numbers, DNS servers, and stuff like that?

If you are looking for DNS servers, phone numbers, and the like you can find it here:
