5.9 Gaming·My gaming pings are very high, what can I do? ·Is Charter compatible with my X-box/Playstation and online gaming?
| | | If you are having latency issues with your cable modem while gaming, there are only a few things you can check locally.
1. Make sure you arent running any file sharing programs such as Kazza, Napster, Clones, etc.
2. Some games such as Quake, and Unreal tournament, can cause your ping to spike if you have the wrong connection type selected in the games' connection type menu. Always select Cable/DSL,in the options menu or even a lower speed such as ISDN. A selection of "ISDN" will produce the most stable gaming connection on cable modems that have a 128kbps upload cap.
3. Most all ping/latency issues are caused by things outside of your computer and house. They will depend on distance from you to the server you are trying to play. If you live on the East coast, try to play on east coast game servers and vise-versa if you live on the west coast. Weather conditions, time of day, number of users, and the speed of the connection the server you are trying to play has can all affect pings.
4. Try a utility such as Gamespy, which will search your computer for installed games and then list servers for you to play on with the ping listed for that server. Very helpful for finding a server which gives you low pings.

Charter Communications does not host or control online gaming servers and is not responsible for issues related to connectivity when attempting to connect to a gaming server using a gaming console.
Technical support for the configuration and setup of gaming consoles is currently outside the scope of our support. However, as an optional support path, our High-Speed Internet Technical Support Staff has sent the following self-help information on your behalf.
