1.0 General Q&A

·What can I do with my old phone(s)?
·If I buy a service plan, can I buy two phones to share the same plan?
·Do cellphones really cause cancer?
·How cellphone minutes work?
·Cellphone Browser Friendly Websites
·Where Can I Check For Recall News On My Phone & Accessories?
·Where can I find phones and service for my area?
·Wireless Taxes in Your State
·Receive Wireless Amber Alerts on your Cell Phone
·Where can I find specifications on Brand XYZ phone
There are many things that you can do with your old phone, you can throw it in a box and keep it as a piece of history, or you can just throw it away. But, that doesn't help anyone. Last year the Wireless Foundation started a program called "Donate a Phone." This program takes old phones and refurbishes them, the phone is programmed to only call 911. The phones are then given out to victims of domestic violence, who can use the phone, free of charge, to call 911.
You can donate the phone by dropping it off at a local drop-off location, which can be found here.

This depends on your provider. Family plans let you share a pool of minutes with multiple people for an additional monthly fee. Each phone used in a pooled minute plan must have a unique phone number. Very few providers will let two cell phones share one number. Most follow one plan, one phone number and one phone rule.

There is no conclusive proof that says that using a cellphone will cause cancer, but at the same time there is no conclusive proof that they will not cause cancer. So, no one really knows the answer. The American Cancer society has done many studies that say cellphones are safe, while other studies say they are not.

I do however recommend using a FCC approved cellphone. They meet all FCC requirements for RF exposure. Also, using a headset or other hands-free device as much as possible is a good thing. You can find the SAR value of your phone here.

Wireless service plans give you a certain number of airtime minutes to use each month. You'll pay a per-minute fee for any calls that you make over this limit, and most plans won't let you carry over leftover minutes to the next month. With cell phones, you pay for the calls you receive as well as the calls you make, so you will need to figure incoming calls in your allotted airtime minutes. Minutes also come in different varieties. Most popular plans give you minutes that you can use at any time of day. These are conveniently referred to as anytime minutes. You'll also see companies still selling plans with blocks of airtime divided up into peak and off-peak minutes. Peak minutes come at a premium and can be used from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays. Weekends and evening hours are considered off-peak, and off-peak calls cost much less per minute.
Most calls are rounded up to the highest minute. So a 15-second call will cost you 1 minute.

You can check here at Recall Warnings.
They maintain a fairly up-to-date list with news on recalls related to phones and their accessories.

Enter your Zip Code at this site, »www.myrateplan.com/cellphones/, and you will find the carriers and the available phones for your area. You can then choose a phone by eliminating carriers you do not wish to use.
