Observing the visual indications as your Cayman attempts to perform a power-up and connect sequence, can be useful in troubleshooting and when posting a problem in this forum, letting others know where your indications differ from the norm will assist in helping resolve your problem.

Here's what to expect:

Start with your DSL phone cord and LAN cable(s) CONNECTED but Caymans' power supply UNPLUGGED.

Now watching the lights on the Cayman, plug in the power supply......

Here's what to expect:

1) Power, LAN port(s), DSL and Status lights come on together.
2) DSL and Status lights off briefly while the Power and LAN port(s) remain on.
3) DSL and Status lights flash alternatively twice.
4) DSL and Status lights off briefly.
5) After a pause of a few seconds the Status light flashes a few times, then
remains on.
6) DSL light flashes a few times then turns off until further internet activity.

This is normal operation. If a step fails, here are some probable causes:

Fails on Step 1:
  a)No lights at all?
       a1)Bad power supply
       a2)Defective Cayman
  b)No LAN port light?
b1)Bad (or incorrect type) patch cable
       b2)Bad NIC
       b3)Cayman port defective, try others
  c)Bad power supply
  d)Defective Cayman

Fails on Step 2:
  a)Bad power supply
  b)Defective Cayman

Fails on Step 3:
  a)Try reloading flash
  b)Defective Cayman

Fails on Step 5:
  a) Status light does not flash.
       a1)Bad/incorrect internal wiring.
       a2)ISP problem
       a3)Defective Cayman
  b) Status light flashes a few times and then goes out, then periodically flashes/goes out.
       b1)Cayman configuration
       b2)ISP problem

Fails on Step 6)
  a)Cayman configuration
  b)ISP problem

Encountering Password problems are common with the Cayman and even more so if you have recently upgraded the firmware. Most users are led to believe that there is a problem with the Password when in reality it a problem with the Username. Here are some suggestions to try before Resetting the Password.

Always start out with
USERNAME: Admin

PASSWORD:
1. Serial Number of your Cayman
2. leave it blank
3. one you previously used

Odds are one of these suggestions will get you in.

This is usually caused by the Cayman believing that the DSL connection has dropped and it then tries to reestablish the connection. When it tries to login to your provider again, their server has never realised that your connection was dropped. It then denies the login thinking that you are attempting to login twice. As a work around, do the following:

1. Browse into your Cayman.
2. Goto Configure
3. GotoWAN
4. Goto WAN IP Interface
5. Click Advanced
6. Change the Max Terminates and Restart Timer to higher numbers.
7. Click submit
8. click the Yellow Triangle and choose save and restart.

This changes forces to Cayman to hold a "dropped" connection a little longer before trying to login again. The problem can be due to a poor DSL signal, lost packets, or just from your provider taking too long to acknowledge a packet. Raising these settings will not cure a line problem, but they will stop the Cayman from dropping the connection so quickly. If you do have a line problem, please contact your provider to have the line checked.

When this happens, browse into the Cayman router and check the home page. If it shows WAN Users: 1, this means your Cayman has dropped it's feature keys.

To correct this, follow these steps:

1. goto »www.netopia.com/equipment/purcha···der.html
2. enter your serial number
3. Do Not Check any Boxes
4. click continue.
5. Fill out the form and download your file.
6. Next, browse back into your Cayman and go to Install.
7. Choose Install Keys.
8. After you have uploaded your keys to your router, choose save and restart.

Be sure to check your other features, as this only restores your WAN Users and Security Monitoring. Feature keys such as VPN and Wireless, if you had them, must supplied from Netopia tech support in a seperate file.
