Like it or not, customers over 12,000 feet from the CO and even some RT-fed customers are put on a plan known as "Optimization" or "Ramp Up". This is essentially how it works: Your new DSL service is turned up at a 384k (and in some cases 192) download rate. Your line is then monitored for approximately 5 days after your order is closed (not after your service is started). That is why you need to leave your modem on for 10 days. A system sees how fast your line can possibly go (max attainable bit rate). Your line speed is gradually increased, as long as the connection is stable.

If you are paying for 1536 and get between 384-1536 after 10 days, that is all you will get. If you are lower than 384, you need to call after the ten day period.

If you are paying for 3M and get between 1.5-3M after 10 days, that is all you will get. If you are lower than 1.5M, you need to call after the ten day period.

Lines which have been upgraded to a higher speed package may also end up in ramp-up under certain conditions as well.

Calling in before the end of the waiting to get your speed "bumped up" is not going to work, so don't bother. All employees have been warned not to adjust anyones speed before the end of the "optimization" period.

For the full discussion on this see this forum thread.

The 6016/608 profile does not have a ramp-up period.

The Ramp Up/Optimization period for the 3008/512 package goes like this:
At two or three day intervals from due date the sync rates are raised.
1984/512
2496/512
3008/512
The Ramp Up/Optimization period is a 10 day period starting on the due date.
If you loop cannot maintain a sync rate,it reverts to the last stable sync rate.
Loops connected to RT's are not normally subject to the Ramp Up/Optimization period because generally RT loops are shorter than CO loops. Its SBC's answer to loops that can't handle 3008/512 sync rates.

Yes, The maintenance window is Monday through Friday 12am through 6am local timezone of the router. This is consistent across DSL, backbone, and the ATM networks.

Up until lately, no. But the various Windows RPC exploits have resulted in SBC blocking port 135. If you need to use that, you will have to call tech support to have it opened back up for your account. See this forum post for details.

UPDATE 10-21-04: There is no announced start date for this, but the SBCIS brain trust has decided that you do not deserve a clean connection to the Internet and are going to start blocking port 25 outbound on dynamic accounts.
See /forum/remark,11613086~mode=flat and this little missive from our friends as SBCIS

Update 02-08-05: Evidence of port 25 blocking in Ameritech territory started appearing in the forum last night. See /forum/remark,12480346~mode=flat for details. As of this update the automated opt-out process appears to both work and is very quick. However, there is still a faint ham odor of unspecified origin.

Please read /faq/11943 if you think your outbound email is being blocked, especially if you do not use the SBC SMTP servers.

Update 08-16-05: SBC has been filtering the Windows NetBios networking ports (135-139) for awhile, and has also been blocking 445 on dynamic accounts. This may have saved countless unpatched systems from the RBOT.CBQ; RBOT.CBR and Zotob.d worms which took out some high profile media organizations today. See /forum/remark,14149087 for discussion.

Yes. You can use any Ameritech dialup number, and your account name and login, for backup service. Note that you should not use dialup and DSL at the same time unless you have an @sbcglobal.net or have migrated your old account into the Yahoo Borg. In that case you are allowed one DSL and one simultaneous dialup connection. If you have a static IP address you may get booted off your DSL connection if you use the same login, however, since your primary login name is assigned the main static IP address, and it cannot be used two places at once so do dialup with a secondary login or don't use the @static prefix.

The new SBC Yahoo!DSL dialup number lookup tool is available here. Most who have tried it have had success using the Yahoo!Dial network with their Ameritech.net login even with a legacy, unmigrated account. It gives you nationwide dialup capability as well as much expanded local dialup access. Note that if you are still an unmigrated Ameritech.net legacy customer you cannot use Yahoo Dial! services to send email.

Just use your normal @ameritech.net or @sbcglobal.net login and password.

The old legacy Ameritech.net access number list is here. However, be sure to check out the number before you use it to make sure it is not long distance for you.

How to delegate reverse authority for your block to you or allow you to provide them with your own reverse...

Your first option is to visit the webpage with the form that asks all of the questions. There are several problems with that page.

1. The list of in-network AT&T addresses that can connect to it hasn't been updated since 2005. Any IP blocks new to AT&T in that time will not be able to connect.

2. The page itself has not been updated since 2003, and still makes references to Pacific Bell Internet Services and SBC, and MUST be linked to from WITHIN the AT&T network. Even then, for some people, it STILL might not work.

That much said, you can try to use that page if you wish at »dialup.pacbell.net/dn_worksheet.html

Or, you can just send an e-mail to prov-dns@att.com with the following information.

You need to supply the following information to have the changes made:

1. DSL Telephone number
2. Domain Name (ie yourdomain.com) and the type of account you have (Pro-S, Elite-S, etc)
3. Email Address (preferably the master DSL account name and it's best to send from that address)
4. Customer Contact Name
5. Company Name (If applicable)
6. IP Block + CIDR (ie 10.10.1.1/29)

What you want done, ARIN record change or delegation etc, PTR records, SPF or DKIM records, MX records, etc.

You must have a package with at least 1 static IP.

If you have any questions, you can also contact the DNS Provisioning Department at 800-833-2120 and select option 1.

When service runs through an RT (remote terminal), there are multiple points for voice service options to become broken. Often the break happens in the RT because of the sensitivity to voltage variances in the cards or their racks. The variance could come from doing your DSL configuration or a power flux in the rack.

If other checks and remedies fail to correct your problem, it could be that the option in your card/rack/rt has gotten changed or set back to a default.

The fast fix is to get the telco to "look" out the line to the RT and confirm that the options on your card match the options set on the central office for your line. The problem is getting them to agree to look because their tendency is to note that the signal to activate or display the option is leaving the central office therefore it must be your equipment at fault.

If you call the telco and report that you have lost your voice mail's message waiting indicator (the light or the stutter dial tone) or that caller i.d. information no longer displays and they close your trouble reports as service working/no trouble found, call for a new ticket and ask to speak to a supervisor. Inform the supervisor that you reported trouble and it still exists and ask him or her to be certain the proper group (group name varies by location) has looked at the CO and RT options to be certain they are matched.

NOTE: This will not always be the cause/fix. In fact, it is often other causes. Just keep this in mind as an option when the other fixes fail to help.

There are three likely causes for the message waiting indicator to not work after getting DSL. First, your phone is not message waiting capable or defective. Second, the visual indicator feature was not activated in the phone switch for your new line. Third, the CPOTS channel card for your line in the central office is not provisioned to be always on (the OHX feature, On-Hook-Transmission). ADLU cards are by default always on.

However, the message waiting visual feature can cause some headaches also. Some phones are sensitive to the signal and will give a 1/2 ring roughly once an hour. The only solution for that is to get a new phone.

As far as call waiting ID goes, If your regular call ID works on incoming calls, about the only reasons call waiting ID wouldn't work is if your phone is not capable or the feature is not activated in the phone switch.

If your regular call ID does not work after having DSL activated, chances are that your line was moved to an RT. The main causes for this trouble is that the feature was not activated in the switch for the new line or the circuit card for your line in the RT is defective.

These are not very common troubles as far as regular phone service goes. When calling in you will most likely have to get a supervisor on the line to help get the proper systems checked.

You can't really, without placing an order and then coaxing someone inside SBC to tell you what your line tested at. You can get a general idea how far you are by using the tools on this site. See "Find Service" on the left-side navigation bar.

SBC's SMTP servers now require username/password authentication, which means you can use them from any connection anywhere. It doesnt matter what your email domain is, and in fact you may have to use the SBC SMTP servers from your DSL connection due to the port 25 filter which is on most dynamic IP accounts. This is a spam-prevention measure which provides some security for the server, and ensures that mail sent through them only originates from SBC accountholders.

You can send mail with any domain name you like, as set up in your mail client. Outgoing mail is not limited to just the "@ameritech.net" domain, as some ISPs are now doing.

Many good people are denied DSL. Life will go on. However, many have to know why. Here are some reasons why people are denied service in telco terminology, translated to English.

1) Loop too long, NFA - This simply means that you are too far from the C.O., No Facilities Available
2) Line is on Pair Gain, RSU (Remote Switching Unit), DAML (Digital Added Main Line), RT (Remote terminal)- NFA - All of these items are, as Doc would say, "the same pig in a different dress". It means your line does not work directly from the C.O. For more info see "RT FAQ". No Facilities Available. They look for a good copper pair before denial.
3) Centrex on RT - DSL will not work on a Centrex line over an RT. The equipment is not compatible. DSL on Centrex or PBX should be avoided if possible.
4) Ported Number - This is when you bring an old telephone number with you from another exchange. Many businesses do this. Try re-ordering on a local #.
5) Door Answering Service - This is for people who can buzz the main door with their phone (usu. apartments). DSL is not compatible without additional equipment (splitters) added to the local system at your expense.
6) DPA (Dual Premise Address), OPX (Off Premise Extension), Dual Service (Temporary or Permanent) - This means your phone number works in more than one location.
7) Distinctive Ring - While technically feasible, not recommended. Cannot be ordered on "ghost" (secondary number) line. Must be ordered on "carrier" (main number) line. Good luck.
8) Excessive Bridged Tap - Some states do not have a bridged tap removal policy in place. Also it can be too expensive to remove Bridged Tap (cost will not be recouped).
9) Loads On Line, Removal affects Dial-Tone - This means loads are on your line, and removing them would adversely affect POTS service. You are probably too far out anyway.
10) CLEC Service - You are served by a POTS CLEC, no SBC DSL for you.
11) At Capacity - The CO or RT that would serve you with DSL is at capacity and has no more available cards for you to connect to. DSL service will be available when more cards are added or when another customer cancels service.

Please see AT&T HSI Package History for current info. Below for reference is info on grandfathered packages and old promo profiles.

The normal sync rate for the Express package is:
1.536Mbps Downstream/384Kbps Upstream
The downstream sync rate can be as low as 384Kbps
The upstream sync rate can be as low as 128Kbps

The normal sync rate for the Pro package is:
3008Mbps Downstream/512Kbps Upstream
The downstream sync rate can be as low as 1.536Mbps
The upstream sync rate can be as low as 384Kbps

As of 2-8-04 Ameritech /SBC has 7 Packages
The most popular package Standard Plus is used in this discussion:
Download Sync Rate (range) 384Kbps up to 1.5Mbps
Upload Sync Rate (range) 128Kbps up to 256Kbps

SBC is currently increasing the upload sync rates and changing back to RADSL.
Your modem sync rate (the capacity of the DSL connection from the Network Interface Device/NID at your home to the DSL Access Multiplexer/DSLAM or Remote Gateway/RT equipment in SBC's network) is different, though.

The sync rate is set at the DSLAM in the Central Office or at the Remote Terminal line card and can be as high as 1536kbps/256kbps for the 384-1.5/128-256kbps package. If you are not getting these maximum rates, your line cannot support the maximum sync rate due to distance, line disturbances (bridge taps most likely)or wiring inside your home or office.

When you want to check your speed use the SBC Speed Test Page you'll need Java support for it to work.

NOTE: Keep in mind that SBC advertises a "Sync Rate" and not results you get on a speed test or any other tests. Some modems will display the Sync Rate....some don't...........Expect to "see" 80%-85% of Sync Rate as a speed test result.
"Only a trained technician using special equipment can test the sync rate."

Original content provided by Radio Doc
Ameritech currently has two "speed profiles": 768 down/128 up and 1500 down/256 up. Your modem or router sync rate (the "speed" it transfers all those bits) is different, though. The sync rate is set at the DSLAM in the Central Office or Pronto Remote Terminal (RT) line card and should be 896 (768)/160 for the 768/128 package or 1760 (1536)/288 for the 1500/256 package (RT speed in ()). If you are not getting these rates, your line cannot support full speed due to distance, line disturbances (bridge taps most likely) or wiring inside your
home or office. As of 3-8-02, a new 1536/288 and 768/160 CO DSLAM profile is also be in use, making CO and RT installs the same.

This should not materially affect your speed though since the download is still limited to the same cap at the Redback.
The 384/128 package sync is 384/160, while the 4000/384 package is 4032/384 kbits/sec and the Expert Plus package is 6016/608.
NOTE: These are the speeds advertised, not what you get on a speed test or any other test than what the modem and DSLAM say the have synced to. Expect to "see" 80%-85% of sync as a usable "payload" rate.

If you do not currently have SBC local POTS service and you want DSL service from SBC, you must order a new POTS telephone line. This order must be placed and installed, before the DSL order can be placed. However, there are several other catches in this process, assuming that you are within the maximum distance from your Central Office or you are connected to a Remote Terminal that has been activated for DSL. Even if you have an existing SBC POTS line, you may have to have the phone number changed to become eligible for DSL service.

Wire Facility Database

Before a DSL order can be placed for a new POTS telephone line, the information on this line has to show up in the Wire Facility Database, which customer service has access to. This database only gets updated, typically, once every 30 days. If your line gets installed right after the database was updated, you have to wait almost a full month before its information will appear in the database and be eligible for a DSL order. If you have bad timing on your order you have to wait for awhile. For existing POTS lines that have been installed longer than a month, this is not an issue.

Assigned POTS Phone Number

When you order your POTS phone line, SBC will assign the prefix to the line. You may also be able to request SBC to use a certain prefix that you know is capable of having DSL ordered on it. This phone number must be within a DSL eligible prefix range, regardless of the fact that the physical line is connected to a DSL enabled CO or Remote Terminal. If the prefix is assigned out of an ineligible range, you will have to call customer service and request a new phone number that is in an eligible range. As of this writing, this will cost you $17. If you inform customer service that the POTS line was specifically ordered for DSL service and that you need a prefix that is capable of having a DSL order placed on it, they will be able to help you out. They can obtain a list of available prefixes for your line and then verify whether or not a specific prefix will be eligible or not. It also helps if you have neighbors with existing DSL service to know what the area code/prefix is assigned to their line. If you can get a number from the same range, you should be okay.

Certain phone number prefixes are considered pooled or ported. If you are unlucky enough to have one of these prefixes assigned to your POTS line, you will have to change it to get DSL service. So, even though you can technically get DSL service on the same physical copper wire, SBC is legally not allowed to place a DSL order on a line that has an ineligible prefix such as this. There is no way for a customer to know about this issue unless they make phone calls and ask.

Your AT&T Yahoo HSI (yahootheclown@sbcglobal.net) mailbox can store 2 gigabytes of emails/attachments for the Master Account Member ID and 2 gigabytes for sub-accounts.

When the 2 gigabyte limit is reached, any inbound email will get returned back to the sender with a message that your mailbox is full.

You can send up to 50 attachments per single email message. You are able to send and receive single email messages up to 20MB in size. The total encoded size of a single email message cannot exceed 20MB. Files attached to your email message will be encoded and will increase the final size of the email by about 30%. A 1.5 megabyte file will increase to about 2 megabytes.

Some features included with AT&T Yahoo HSI Email:
No graphical ads or footers.
Norton AntiVirus™ scans and attempts to clean outgoing/incoming email and attachments.
AddressGuard disposable email addresses.
Spamguard routes "junk" emails to your Bulk folder, where you can review/delete them.

If you have not migrated a Ameritech account (speedpath@ameritech.net)the mailbox size limit is 6 MB combined for the main account and all subaccounts added together. Outgoing, the limit seems to be around 2 MB but that hasn't been confirmed.

SBC does not give out that information as to when and where RT's are deployed. There has been much speculation on what factors are used to convince SBC to install a Remote Terminal - but in the end no one is sure and the folks that know are not saying.

The best recommendation is to continue to request DSL service at regular intervals, and have others in your unserved area who want DSL continue to request service as well. It is assumed that the expense involved in installing an RT needs to be covered by enough demand to make it profitable to install. That said, RT's do not go in overnight - they usually involve substantial engineering work and lead time.

So the short answer is it is presently impossible for us to predict when SBC will install an RT or provide DSL service in any given area.

In May of 2006 the four regional and one direct support SBC forums changed their names to the AT&T forums. The change was cosmetic only, reflecting the present state of the consolidation taking place in the telephone industry.

To quote RadioDoc-
quote:
SBC is alive and well and hiding inside the burned-out hulk of ATT that they bought last year...

Nothing has changed except the name.

For the foreseeable future you will still see references to SBC and the older regional names: Ameritech, PacBell, SWBell, and SNET.

AT&T Midwest - SBC-Ameritech Funhouse! We serve IL, WI, OH, MI, and IN.
AT&T Southwest - SWBell - Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
AT&T Northeast - SNET - Conn.
AT&T West - PacBell - California and Nevada.
AT&T Direct - SBCDirect - The AT&T officially sanctioned direct support forum.
