The Unofficial *Official* GameCube Online FAQ Disclaimer: This FAQ is based on Warp Pipe 0.3.5 client. Any future revisions may address certain aspects of usability or add additional features that may not be covered here. Please consult the additional reference links throughout this listing and towards the end for ways on finding out additional information.
This FAQ is primarily dedicated for those that use the Nintendo GameCube. If you have a GameCube and want to play online, do read on, as all the information that will be discussed is specifically for you.
What games can I play online with my Nintendo GameCube?
In order to play online with the Nintendo GameCube, you firstly need a game that will support network play.
Currently, the only "true" online games that have been released for the Nintendo gamecube are the Phantasy Star Online games. These also are the only games that will support both the Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapater and the Nintendo GameCube Modem Adapter. This is primarily true because all responsibility of hosting and supporting the Phantasy Star Online games is Sega, and they have chosen to run these games as an MMORPG, which implies an additional monthly fee to gain access to their servers and online component.
However, for those that have a game that supports a LAN mode for play, there is an alternative to allow you to play against others online, thanks to Warp Pipe!
What is Warp Pipe?
Warp Pipe is computer software that provides an IP tunnel that allows for connecting with another Warp Pipe user over the internet and play any LAN-supported GameCube game.
For those familiar with Xbconnect, it is essentially the same principle behind the software, but geared for the Nintendo GameCube.
Where can I download Warp Pipe?
For the latest release build of Warp Pipe, please go to Warp pipe's download page and choose the appropriate client for whichever operating system you are running on your computer.
What Operating systems can I run Warp Pipe on?
Currently, Warp Pipe can be run on the following OS's and versions: •Windows 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, XP •Macintosh OS X versions 10.2.* and 10.3.* •Linux Kernel with libpcap and Qt 3.X library support. •BSD Kernel with libpcap support and either FreeBSD 4.X or FreeBSD 5.x with 4.x compatability.
I am currently using MacOS 9 (or earlier) on my Mac. Can I still run Warp Pipe?
There are currently no plans for supporting Warp Pipe on any systems earlier than MacOS X.
What do I need in order to successfully get my gamecube online with Warp Pipe?
Please see Warp Pipe's Getting Started page for more detailed instructions.
However, the simple requirements for running Warp Pipe are:
•PC or Mac running Windows, OS X, Linux or BSD •Warp Pipe Software for your OS •Nintendo GameCube •Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapter •LAN-enabled GameCube game •Broadband Internet Connection •Warp Pipe Supported Network Configuration
I am using a router with my PC and gamecube. Do I need to forward any ports to play?
With 0.3.5, it is typically not needed to forward a port to connect to someone to play. However, if you want to host a game, you will currently need to forward Port 4000 TCP to the computer running warp Pipe software.
Current plans for future development will include improved router compatibility, so that with the next major release ( 0.4 ), you may not need to forward any ports at all.
How fast of a connection do I need to run Warp Pipe?
In terms of bandwidth, you will generally need a 128Kbps upload for most LAN-supported games, with 256Kbps upload recommended for Kirby's Air Ride.
Also, for optimal play, lower latencies are a must, as ping times are highly depended on for framerate within LAN modes on most GameCube games.
What games are supported by Warp Pipe?
Support is planned for all LAN-enabled GameCube games. Currently, LAN-enabled GameCube games include: •Kirby's Air Ride •1080: Avalanche •Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
I have the Nintendo GameCube Modem Adapter. Can I play on warp Pipe?
No. LAN mode implies using the broadband adapter, and therefore implies a high-speed connection.
Where can I buy the Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapter?
If looking for it locally, places like GameStop and EB games may have them, but will more than likely have very short supply.
Your best bets would include looking online. You can either purchase the Broadband Adapter directly from Nintendo, or in places such as lik-sang.
How can I find out my global IP to host a game?
In Warp Pipe 0.3.5, there is a menu option available to find this out quickly.
How can I find people to play against online?
Currently, you can find other people via using Warp Pipe's on-site Game Finder, which currently requires being able to log in on their forums (registration is free).
Other ways would include finding people who you know with similar setups through instant messaging.
One of the goals for the next major release ( 0.4 ) is said to have a more advanced opponent finder, but don't let that stop you from having fun now.
How much does it cost to run Warp Pipe?
Running the Warp Pipe software is free, provided that you already have the rest of the requirements taken care of.
Warp Pipe is an effort by several dedicated developers, and have elected to keep Warp Pipe free and available to all users willing.
