Bit Torrent is an open-source file-sharing application like no other. It integrates itself into your browser and associates itself with files ending in ".torrent". The program was written by Bram Cohen and carries an MIT license.

This allows people to distribute files amongst the net without paying for massive amounts of bandwidth.
