The posts made to Usenet will be broken down into chunks. Each post will be the same size except the last post and each will need to be downloaded so that you can process the rar files. These posts will appear as filename.r01, filename.r02 and so on. You will also see posts that appear as filename.p01. These are par files. Par files are used to reconstruct the rar files that are missing from the archive. For every rar you are missing you can substitute one par file. For example if you downloaded 50 rar files and two are incomplete or corrupt you could then download two par files and still be able to reconstruct the archive. FSRaid is a data recovery tool that uses par files.
