While connected to AT&T Broadband Internet, you can set up your computers to share your files and printers so that other computers in your household can access them. The following method will work whether you are sharing your Internet connection using a hub, a router, or a computer running Internet Connection Sharing. (Note that this is for advanced users; we've provided the general guidelines below, but the particulars differ between operating systems, so it's up to the user to be aware of where these changes should be made.)
The general idea is to use a protocol other than TCP/IP to do your sharing. For Windows, Microsoft provides two choices: IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. You may prefer NetBEUI, because it doesn't have to be configured, though IPX/SPX may be your choice if you're doing more esoteric networking. If you don't know which to choose, choose NetBEUI.
After loading your alternate protocol, reconfigure TCP/IP so that File & Print Sharing is no longer bound to it. Ensure, however, that File and Print Sharing is bound to your alternate protocol. (For systems using two network interfaces for Internet Connection Sharing, the alternate protocol should be bound to the adapter that is connected to the network segment that your other systems are connected to, not to the one connected to the Cable Modem.)
As for configuration on File & Print Sharing itself, let the Browse Master be chosen automatically, and set "LM Announce" to "Yes". After configuring, you'll be asked to reboot.
Finally, be sure that your system's Computer Name is unique on your network, and that your system's Workgroup is identical to the other systems you'd like to share resources with. (Microsoft's default for this is "workgroup", and that's as good a name as any.) Analogous rules apply if your are running a Microsoft Networking Domain.
When your systems come back up, they should communicate with the Internet via TCP/IP, and communicate with each other via the alternate protocol. Assuming all your computers have been set up to be on the same workgroup, the Network Neighborhood should show all of your systems.
