In 2007, the FCC removed all code requirements from US Amateur licensing. This means that there is no regulatory need to learn the code, and one can advance through the levels of licensing without having to know the code. However, there is much to the hobby that will be missed if one never learns the code, and there is evidence that when all else fails, CW is the one remaining mode of radio communication that will always get through.
It's really up to the individual, but there is much satisfaction in using this original mode of communication to "rag chew" with another ham on the other side of the globe, using the simplest of transmitters on very low power or "QRP".
The code is not terribly difficult to learn, and there are many good software applications that help the learning process.
