With the exception of waiting for the 4th of July weekend, which added an extra 3 days until the service tech could come to my home and re-check the wiring (I was switching back to Verizon from our local town's "dark fiber" tv/data/phone experiment), everything went well.
The Verizon self-install CD could not accurately configure my Westell 327W modem/router. However, one call to Verizon tech support and a very friendly person walked me through a few "simple" steps, making everything work as it should. (Initially, there was a hangup in the "auto registration" vs. the "my connection" setup parameters.)
Of course, my 35 years of computer experience helped make this process a little more "simple." I had Road Runner before this, and while I sacrifice a chunk of "statistical" download speed (latency issues notwithstanding), my Verizon DSL connection is proving to be rock solid, rain or shine.
Update: I left Verizon to take a RoadRunner deal some months ago, then Verizon offered a great bundle of cell phone, 3M/768k ADSL, and landline phone service.
The Actiontec Router/Modem works very well. I wish it were Draft N, but you can't have everything (for now).
Back to Verizon for what I hope to be a long, happy (renewed) partnership.
Update: August 1, 2008. Verizon is still my cell service, but I use Road Runner for 15M cable modem and digital phone service. Verizon has given up on my lowly west-central Ohio area. I only wish AT&T would come to St. Marys so I could buy an iPhone.
Update: July 7, 2009. Still with Time Warner for my digital phone. Their International Plan works very well and saves me about $30/month over the Skype charges on my PC-to-Phone calls to Russia, Ukraine, and Sweden.

Had AOL broadband...need I say more? Just got Verizon DSL connected tonight. They sent new Westell 327w modem/wireless router which only took about 10 minutes to set up . Link is fast and stable so far. Enough said!
Update 11-2-2008:
The past few months our Verizon DSL has been having problems. During certain times of the day (or night) our connection slows down to a crawl or just stops working. Verizon customer service has been responsive, they sent a new Westell 7500 router and rolled a tech to our house (which resulted in them finding 1000' bridge tap), but the problem remains. It has taken 10 or so calls to Verizon DSL tech but now the problem has been escalated to where higher level techs (english speaking) are actually calling me and finally they are talking about problems at the CO. From the great forums at dslreports I have learned that the problem is overloaded routers at VZ and that the people at the Verizon Direct forum can help. I'm giving the regular techs at VZ a little more time though because they really have been trying to solve my problem.
I also received a notice from VZ that FIOS is soon to be installed in my area...drool!

After fulfilling my yearly requirement for my old ISP and with DSL from Verizon available with not much of a risk except shipping charges for the modem I decided to try it and it is working much better than the wireless service. It costs less, the speeds are faster and more reliable, and there isn't the extra costs if equipment malfunctions like it would be with my wireless isp.
I have 1500/348 and get 1270 / 371 on the speed test I just did which is in-line with other ex-gte people.
No complaints so far.
03/21/2005 Been working fine except for a couple of outages that effected most Verizon customers in the Pacific North West. I haven't upgraded to the higher speed yet since I don't have the need for that capacity at the moment although the faster upload would be nice. The modem has been up 24/7 with only a couple of power cycles needed.
01/10/2006 Still working great but only have 1500/348 since there's no 3000 service here yet. Uptime is in the 99.99% range.
04/20/2007 Same old report again. Still 1500/384. Uptime is ok but it seems that a single point of failure is present since twice in the last month most if not all of the area code has went dead due to a broken fiber somewhere.
2007-10-08 Same stuff mostly, same speed, occasionally down but mostly at night. They added a search results page for bad urls that are entered. That sucks, I just want to know if it's good or not not some damn page with other crap on it. I want 3000 service too, 1500 is getting closer to not being broadband everyday!
2008-07-09 1500/384 still. Look at all the verizon 7000-dsl and fios ads! look there because it isn't HERE! The land of GTE is forgotten unless you own a palm tree or $50k+ automobiles. Oh and mr. phone guy to fix the line the other day said they love DSL because it frees up all the voice lines people were doubled up on for dialup. Upgrades Upgrades Upgrades everywhere please, I'm sure the $100k's you make off the fiber feeding you know what here could afford you something better for the community.

Final Update 5/20/08
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[In the beginning,...(August 2000)]
This is for Verizon Online California (not Verizon East Coast). I think Verizon California is a great DSL provider. I don't know why East Coast is so different. The DSL service came on exactly the day they said it would, and set-up was easy since they mail this info packet to you. I didn't use their "software" which was just a copy of IE and Netscape. I have speed tweaked my pc and I get speeds of 680 down and 120 up on the Bronze+ package which is 768 down and 128 up. The service has not failed yet, and although I can tell times of "slow-downs" they are rare.
My only complaint is that they give you this user name and email address that no one can remember, but you can make an alias for it.
The package is: Bronze+, 39.95 / mo. for 12 months, setup and activation fees waived and free modem (Fujistu). The IP is dynamic and the DNS is DHCP, which basically means install your NIC, plug it in to modem, and set for DHCP, reboot and you're online! Since I just signed another year lease at my home, it didn't bother me to sign up for the year of service. The order was simple: "Hello, Verizon? I want DSL Bonze+. OK, we'll send the modem to you and start your service in 3 weeks. Call with any questions!" The installation was as simple as following the enclosed instructions with the modem.
I only had to call tech support once, about setting up my email program, and I got prompt service by knowledgeable people who walked my through set up over the phone, and then made sure it worked for me. Great tech support, however long the hold time is, and if that person doesn't know, they will get someone who does!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: (February 2003)...
Still running same package since now it costs $10 more if you sign up today, so I'm sticking with this "deal" as long as I can. I can now upgrade to a higher speed package - 1.5 down and 128 up - but it would bump me up $20 a month (it is only a $10 bump up if you are currently paying the "real" rate). Since the upload is so wimpy I don't see a point in wasting money on more down, especially when I don't really need it. Also, after the first year contract, DSL is month-to-month now.
Also, Verizon seems to have a lot more customers on DSL now as the Dynamic IP you're given only lasts about 2 weeks. The first year I had it I don't think I switched IP's, so that says something (I was also the 6th residential DSL customer at the time). This means that you have to refresh your modem more often. Also I had a major three-day service interruption (the only one in three years) where I spent a lot of time on the phone with Tech Support, which seems to have gotten a little worse. I told them I knew a lot about DSL and troubleshooting and they still wanted to read me the "troubleshooting recepie". I finally got my line restarted when I called some national help line (not the local number) and they refreshed my circuit. Took them 5 minutes. Turns out that it had nothing to do with my CO which is where I thought the problem had to be since that's were my line is provisioned. If I had called the national help line first they could have had the problem fixed right away. (So I downgraded the Connection Reliability and Tech Support from a 5 to a 4).
But the speeds are still holding. Make sure you speed tweak your setup though, it makes a difference. I actually see slightly higher speeds today than I recorded originally, about 700+/120.
Adelphia cable finally came to Redlands, but with the problems Adelphia is having lately, I'd stay with DSL. I think the pricing is about the same, but I don't have cable so I don't want to deal with Adelphia's problems. Again. let me reiterate for those who b*tch about Verizon: when I got my DSL it was originally GTE, so whatever problems there are now with people getting DSL in Redlands, it's all Verizon, as GTE was great at the time.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Update 5/14/03
Well, it's been a couple weeks now since Verizon announced their $34.95/mo new service, which includes 1.5/128.
I called VZ shortly after the rumor broke here at DSLR and spoke to a CSR who put in for the new monthly rate on the billing (4/29/03). No problems there, yet. I tried getting the speed increase, but after requesting a physical line test, they tell me (via email) that they won't give me the speed increase simply because I am on old Frame-Relay equipment (with a Fujitsu modem). (5/5/03)
So the reason that I lowered my "Value for the Money" rating from a 5 to a 3 is because all the people who got DSL after me were put on the proper equipment and given the modem for that equipment (ATM equip. & Altcatel/Westell Modem). Even people over 11,000 ft away with the Westell get 1.5. I'm at 3,000 ft, but it doesn't matter anyway. So for the same amount of money as they are paying, I'm getting half the service.
So I called again after getting contacted by two other Redlands DSLers on this site (the ones with the Westell equip.) who told me I should try to get them to switch me. I spoke to one CSR, Monica, and she told me there would be no problems with switching me up to the new hardware and speed. She'd put in the email request, then they would email me in up to two weeks with the change date, and mail me the new Westell modem to install myself when the change date comes. (5/13/03)
A day later (5/14/03), I got an email stating, again, that I don't qualify because of the hardware. After repeated phone calls (Matthew & company) and a couple emails they have outright told me that I don't qualify for the speed increase only because of their old hardware! They have also told me that I cannot upgrade, and that there is "no process" for upgrading from old equipment to new. They even told me that if the new modem shows up at my door to refuse shipment so I don't get charged for it. If I'm getting the new modem doesn't someone think I can get the upgrade? Well I'm keeping the modem (if I get it) in case they ever do upgrade my equipment. Maybe I can call and complain that my DSL doesn't work with my new modem and there must be some problem in the CO (like they put me on the wrong equipment!). In the mean time, they told me of two ways to get the upgrade right now to get the new modem and be put on the proper hardware in the CO (and therefore actually get 1.5):
ONE: CANCEL the DSL I have now, wait TWO WEEKS (at least, if not more) for VZ to release the line, and then re-order it (and wait another two weeks). I would then get the new equipment since I am now a "new customer". But lose DSL for up to a month. TWO: get a second phone line installed with a new phone number. Order DSL on that line. Once it is installed, cancel the DSL on my old line and cancel my old phone number. That way I can get DSL without droppong my current DSL service.
Sure, I want to spend the next year updating everyone who has my number. And I bet that my email address would change, too, for both options. This is their idea of service? Totally inconveniencing me when it would take them all of 20 minutes to switch my pair over to a new blade and put a new modem in the mail. Gee, thanks VZ, I think I'll pass on that one.
So I have lowered my Pre-sales info from a 5 to a 3 since the right hand can't see what the left is doing and I get conflicting info from differing CSRs (and hung up on occasionally). And I lowered my install coordination from a 5 to a 3 since they don't want to help give me the service I am paying for. Since they are already getting the same amount of money out of me, they could care less what equipment I'm hooked to now. I wish I had put in for the 1.5 down at 59.00/mo for at least a couple months before this plan came out. I never thought I would get stuck with a bunch of lazy liars.
If Adelphia wasn't so bad, VZ would have lost a customer. As it stands, I am "stranded" at 768 simply for being an early adopter. Punished for being a 3 year DSL customer! I hope VZ upgrades what old hardwware remains in my CO some time in the future. I wonder how many others are stranded like me. My opinion of VZ has dropped with this incident, but I would still recommend them for new DSLers since they would not be subjected to this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 1/4/03
Well on the advice of another DSLer (should you be nameless?), I was told of the success of "downgrading to dial-up, then re-ordering DSL". This is supposed to allow you to keep your original account so you don't lose email, etc. Well when I decided to go through with it the CSR told me it was a crap shoot. I could lose DSL altogether, or get re-provisioned right back to Frame-Relay or wind up getting ATM service. Since I didn't think the CO was full, and others were getting ATM, I decided to go for it. So on 12/11/03 I downgraded. Scheduled disconnect from DSL was 12/16/03, and it was. On 12/20/03 I called up and re-ordered DSL, and they gave me the online deal (1st month free, etc.), and the live date was 12/30/03. I got two phone calls from Verizon, the first one was 12/29/03, and it told me I was live. The second was 6 days later, telling me the same thing. Well I got back (I did this over Xmas vacation when I wasn't home so I would miss as much of the dial-up downtime as possible) and I plugged in the modem and it synched! So today 1/4/04, I am back up at 1.5/128 on ATM! Awesome...
Verizon was hassle free about this. In fact, when I called to downgrade to dialup, I told her why and the CSR knew I was going to re-order DSL after the downgrade, so apparently this method is getting popular. It only took one call to downgrade, and one call to reorder, and it was quick and easy both times. Now, this is a stupid hassle for us early-adopters to go through, but for me, it worked, just as it did for the DSLer who recommended this to me. I say go for it, for all you other west-coast early adopters who want the speed increase. And I am increasing my ratings, since this worked so well. Yeah, it shouldn't be necessary to go through this for an upgrade, but it worked so well, I feel much better about VZ now.
P.S. All I did was plug the new modem right back in where the old Fujitsu was and it worked flawlessly. No need to run the CD you get with the modem (it doesn't install anything you need), and I didn't change my old filters for new ones (filters are filters) but I got another box of them. Still DHCP here. Also I am (according to VZ) 4,000 ft from CO. Line tests show about 1300 down. That's almost double the old 700, so I am estatic. If you have any questions about this process for yourself, please IM me.
---------------------------
Update 5/25/04
Called for the upgrade in speed from 1.5/128 to 1.5/384. Took me about a week to get it, but I did. Lots of phone calls to check on the status with the same response: Should be done shortly, check and if not, call us again.
----------------------------
Update 11/15/04
Ok, well, VZ finally made available another speed increase: 3.0/768. So I called to get it on 11/4/04. Was it painless and easy? Hardly:
11/4
When I called, the lady said I qualified and that it should be done by early afternoon, but as of 5:00 today I have not yet received the speed increase. I called VZ about it after 6:00pm, and the lady told me the order was still pending, but was supposed to be today. So she told me to call back tomorrow am if the speeds did not change between now and then.
11/05
Friday morning: no speed increase, so I called Friday morning, they said to wait until Friday afternoon. Still no increase. I called Friday afternoon, they said to wait until after 6pm. Still no increase.
So then I called Friday night. They told me to give it 24 hours and check again. I told them they had until Monday night. If I get home Sunday and its still the same problem, I'm going to call VZ and tell them I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED!
The info they gave me (song and dance #23404) was that they were 3/4 done on provisioning my line. The provision had happened from them to the ASLAM, and to the ATM, but that it had not yet taken place from the ATM to my modem. They only figured that out after they kept insisting that I had the upgrade in after doing a line test, and I kept telling them that all the speedtests I was doing weren't showing JACK. I don't know why some people were able to get this immediately. It sounded like they had to form a committee to handle my request.
11/8/04
Well, I got home from work and checked, I'm still showing HALF my original (1.5) download speeds. I'd be happy just to get back to what I had before. I knew messing with VZ was going to cause me anguish.
But, on the basis of the last call, if the tech starts up with the "it must be your hardware" problem, I will be giving them an earful about how its their problem, and if they don't get to fixed by the end of the week, I will demand satisfaction from Presidential Appeals.
VZ has never seemed totally incompetent (to me at least) until now.
11/9/04
I'm calling them tonight when I get home from work, and I'm not taking no for an answer. I'm telling them that who ever is provisioning my line (I thought this was all a software setting since many people get the upgrade on the spot) must be on vacation. I didn't think they actually had to make any hardware changes.
So I called again, requested (demanded) line tests and an engineer to look at my hardware in the CO. They said they would do tests and call me in 48 hours.
11/10/04
Got a call from VZ that the service had been completed, and got an email saying same on Wednesday night. I check, yup, speed tests show it fairly close to expected speeds. However, I wonder if I can get them to tweak this line, on that trouble ticket.
11/11/04
Ran full speed tests on my day off, and ran tweak tests etc. Speeds top out at 2594 down/706 up. I guess they finally got it working, so I'm happy.
However, I am not happy with the fact that VZ always can't seem to do anything the easy way. It always takes several days and forceful language.
However, the DSL line is very reliable, and quality (once you get it) has never been an issue with me.
11/13/04
Got a call from VZ DSL repairs saying the found some problems on my line and fixed them, but they want to run more tests. I will call them back Monday 11/15.
It should be noted that the price for this package is currently 44.95 per month, but if you ask for the year contract thing it goes to 39.95 per month for one year. So it's only $5 more a month thanI was paying for 1.5/384, which I think is a good deal to upgrade to.
If VZ ever lowers the 3.0/768 to 29.95 per month like they did for NY, I'd be on that in a heartbeat. (Plus it means that the 7.0 tier may be coming soon for all of us DSLers not signed up with FIOS).
11/15/04
According to the Verizon rep I talked to, if you are getting 70% of the rated line speed, then they don't bother trying to help you get the last 30% or so.
In my case, I was seeing download speeds of about 2594 on a 3.0 service. Well that is 86% of rated speed.
How do I know this? Well I tried calling VZ on my trouble ticket of slow speeds issue. They happened to close it the same day I called. So they reopened it.
The first tech I talked to had me disconnect my Westell Wirespeed modem from the power strip and connect it straight to the wall. Well when I hooked it up, it no longer worked. I could not establish a connection to it, even when I put everything back the way it was. At this point, I had been on hold so long befor talking to this rep that the cordless phone I was using started beeping Low Battery. It died before I could get to a hard line.
So I call back, the next rep was so clueless, she told me the people who could troubleshoot this problem were closed, and that she did not even have the basic troubleshooting list in front of her. She told me to call back tomorrow and hung up! WTF! I just called!
SO I call again. The next lady is not much better, but at least she tries to help. I had to tell her that my Westell Wirespeed modem had apparently died while trying to troubleshoot the problem with the other rep, but that I had just received the new Westell Versalink modem because I had requested the speed upgrade and then signed on for a year, whereupon I got the free Versalink. Well that took about 20 minutes to explain how I happened to have a second modem.
At least we could troubleshoot with it. I set it up, and she tries; she has me read settings to her. She has me totally reset the modem, reboot my computer, clear cookies, cache (she pronounces it "cash-a" (you know I'm in trouble now), history, blah, blah.
Then she has me do speed tests on infospeed.verizon.net. The tests result in the same speeds I was initially reporting - about 2594 down. I have to explain to her that my upload is not my download speed when she tells me that I am getting far beyond my download speed of 768. I tell her that my service is for 3000 down, and that I am only getting 2594 averages down! It was never a problem of me connecting, it was a problem not getting my full speeds! According to the Versalink, my line is rated at 3360 down and 864 up, as this is what the modem is reporting!
So she says she will escalate the ticket. Then she changes her mind, and tells me that since I am getting over 70% of the rated speeds of the line, there is nothing further that she is obligated to do.
I think she gave up and used that as a way out. Sure, 70% is good enough, but if I want to take the time to troubleshoot my line for max speeds, they should help!
So, now I had to re-configure this Versalink to turn off the DHCP it has and enable IP pass-thru (bridge mode only). Well I had to download the manual for this modem, read it and figure it all out. I turned the Wireless off (don't need it or want it), and got it set to pass the IP to my real Router, like I had the setup before my Wirespeed died.
So I tell her I don't like this Versalink, I want a Wirespeed back, especially after it died because the tech had me fool with it! She told me it was out of warranty when I have not even had DSL for a year (it went live Jan 4, 2004). She said according to her records, I have had DSL since 10-16-2000. This is true, I did, but it was Frame with a Fujitsu modem and I canceled that service last December 2003. I then re-ordered DSL two weeks later, and it is a new service: DSL on ATM with a new Wirespeed modem! Well that confused her even more. She told me I had to call DSL Equipment and see if they felt like replacing my Wirespeed.
So to make a long story short (too late), if you are getting 70% or better, don't bother calling! After I got that Versalink configured in place of the Wirespeed, at least my speeds are the same. It could be worse, the speeds could have gotten slower as the result of my desire to "fine tune the line".
DON'T DO IT - you will waste hours of your life with people who are barely capable of knowing their own names! At least they could have been up front about it, and not tell me 2 hours later.
----------------------------------------------
Update (requested by BBR) 7/31/06
No change in service status. Been up, stays up, works great (up to 70/80% of rated download speeds anyway).
My only beef is the constantly rotating Dynamic IPs. I VPN into an office occasionally, and VZ used to not change IPs so often, so having a Dynamic IP didn't bother me. Now it does because they change the IP like every 15 minutes.
However, I don't VPN enough to make switching to a Static IP worth the expense, so I don't ding Verizon for this. I just deal with it. Having a DynamicDNS service doesn't help much either since I have to update that before I can initiate the VPN, then update it at least twice when the session drops due to the IP change and re-initiate the VPN and pick up where I left off. Again, this hassle is only due to my desire to avoid the expense of a Static IP, so I know that I am getting what I payed for.
FIOS is now in town. Not yet in serivce yet, but if I get it, I guess it will end this review since it won't be VZ DSL anymore.
All told, VZ, like any other company, is only as good as it's employees. I would say that those employees are about average run-of-the-mill people just trying to do a job in a large, complex, sometimes disorganized large company.
I would still recommend VZ DSL to those in my area. Adelphia (VZ's cable competitor) is probably going to be something other company shortly. Whether they can compete evenly remains to be seen. Whether FIOS can blow away cable also remains to be seen.
----
5/20/08
I moved out of Verizon DSL June 2007, so this review is as is, and no further.

UPDATE 4/2/2008 After many years of good service we're cancelling only because we're going to use our T1 with dialup failover for our sole biz connection. Kudos to Verizon.
-----
Pre-Sales Info (5): Online information provided was accurate and I just placed the order online
Install (5): Modem showed up within a few days, long before the provisioning date. Gave us plenty of time to install the splitter at our building NID.
Connection Reliability (5): A big 5 because I'm well outside the normal Cu loop limits of Verizon. A database discrepancy allowed me to order. Thankfully I have lines just clean enough to stay synced. 6-9dB interleaved, borderline, but just good enough for 768/128 provisioning with interleaving. Service has been stable for the 4 years I've had it.
Tech Support (-): Not rated because I've never had to call them. And I will try to avoid at all costs because any problem will be blamed on 19,200 Cu ft loop Of course they would likely be right.
Services (5): Service is extremely cheap for business class service. There aren't as may extras as there are with residential. Included in my $30+junk fees plan 1 dyn IP (DHCP), 24/7 support, 10 email addresses, no web space, no dial-up time (offered for $9/mo for 50 hrs, a rip-off), free install (with the online order) and free modem.
Value for money (5): You simply can't beat $30 plus about $2 in junk fees for business DSL service, especially around here.
It's great by itself, but even worth it for a backup. We're using it as a backup for our T1 or when we need to test remote access setups. Overall while I've read about lots a problems with Verizon DSL, my connection has been stable and I would recommend them since they have a money back guarantee (30 days I think) if you aren't happy.
Provided Modem is a Westell 6100 bridged. Package is Business 768/128 DHCP for $29.99 + about $2 in junk fees + POTS

At the time that I got broadband, Verizon was the only game in town and doesn't offer FIOS in this area (Southern Oregon).

Verizon FIOS was an easy setup with no issues. Have not had any problems with it at all. I have the 15MB/2MB connection for $50 a month. Now just waiting on FIOS TV.
