I was with Dallas.net for 5 1/2 years and reccomended their web hosting parent, Catalog.com, to many customers and used them myself.
About 2 years ago they decided to use a web based tech support, but I still used their phone number and was able (after holding for at least 20 to 30 minutes every time) to speak with one of their tech support (?) people. Talk about airheads. I always had to tell them the problem and often had to tell them how to fix it. Even talked with the owner (Bob Crull) and was promised that the terrible service and mail systems were repaired. Guess what. Another lie.
Download speeds were always an issue, but one I could live with as they were close enough to the claimed speeds as to not be worth allowing the cable company access to my home. Within the last year the download speeds dropped to 168 and were progressively getting worse.
Mail delivery became a MAJOR issue approximately a year ago. Their mail servers were garbage and they tried patching over and over until you never knew if your mail was going to get there or not. As an E-commerce entity, I finally had to move on as I had to write code into my shopping cart to duplicate the orders to another e-mail address (dial-up) to verify delivery.
Be smart and stay away from these people. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary by losing all e-mail for 11 days. Smart way to stay in business.

1) They used to have great, knowledgeable service available, but now they have outsourced it to a Web- based support service that is terrible, slow to respond, and does not allow phone calls under any circumstances. Trying to resolve an issue by Web mail is frustratingly slow becasue you lose the two way dialogue, and each message takes about 24 hours for a response. TERRIBLE!!!
2) They use the WinPoet dialer to connect, and lately I have been having an increasing number of problems with my connection getting dropped. The only way to reconnect is to turn off the router AND the PC for at least 2 minutes and then restart it again. I don't know if this problem exists with Bell or with Dallas.net, but I am NOT going back with them when I move this month.

Had been using Dallas Internet for the last 9years, first six as dial-up. When I got DSL service fron GTE (now Verizon) I had the chance to keep Dallas Internet as my ISP. Sure glad I did.
How are things going you for you @Home users? And how are you AT&T broadband people doing also?
Dallas Internet's tech people are the best that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. From some reason, after I started DSL service, the server would not assign my computer an IP address after connecting, the tech and I were stumped on this one ... clean line, no problem with negotiation, just no IP assignment. Well, just to make things easier the tech just went ahead and gave me a fixed IP just so I could get hooked up and running.
I help many people with their computers (software and hardware) and help them set up their internet service with whatever company they have chosen. What a pain some of them have been in the past (disconnects, no answers, very poor speeds). Dallas Internet has always been the easiest and quickest service that I have found in the MetroMess to use!

I used them in the past for dialup, and had a good experience. When I chose to change my DSL ISP from SWBell due to DHCP server problems, I chose Dallas.net.
The account setup was very quick and easy, and after hassling SWB Telco to get my circuit remapped, I was up and running very fast!
HOWEVER, if you access newsgroups for downloading binaries, look elsewhere. They only have a 128K connection to their news provider, and do not plan to up the bandwidth anytime soon. This is according to their General Manager Lynn Reaves as of 4-17-2000.

Gentelmen:
I have been using the net for quite a few years, hoping around from one ISP to another. I have used big names, and some small names - like Verio (when they were On-Ramp) as well as Internet America.
Recently, however, I have upgraded to DSL. Wow.. what a difference..
I chose Dallas Internet for a few good reasons - 1. VERY affordable. The basic services I needed are under $50.00 a month (not including the line costs).
2. Configurable. Each package they offer has customizeable options - such as multiple dhcp addresses, static addressing, etc..
3. Pricing plan - Month to month, contract, direct withdrawal (from checking OR credit cards.)
4. Support. I spent 3 months researching ISP's in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area looking for "a fit" for me. The sales crew here understood my concerns, and we very helpful everytime I called.
When I made the decision to go DSL, and called GTE (the ONLY group i can use right now), Dallas Internet called me to let me know that they just got the request from the phone company for the line information. I got the modem a few days early, and was up and running within 15 minutes of unpacking the box.
Initial support from Dallas.net was very good - they emailed me all the info i needed before i needed it. This allowed me to get onlne in record time, compared to ISDN (which i was using for 4 years) - I have spent 2 weeks with some compaines, getting isdn to work right.
Now, im online at HIGH speeds (sometimes hitting the full 1.5 mb/s - even though I didnt order that much)..
Im very impressed and happy with GTE/Dallas.net combo..
