I recently upgraded my service with Neon and the internet seems to work a lot better. However, I believe it to be still a little too slow for what I am paying.
It's always easy to get a hold of technical and customer support. In fact, anyone you talk to is very helpful and friendly.
Recently they have had a few outages. Nothing horrible. But paying close to $70/month for internet just seems insane. Especially with other ISPs offering similar products for half of the cost. I'm currently on a package that sports 1.5/384.
I get intermittent service nowadays when my firewall is in place. I'm not sure what's been done but sometimes the service is flawless and runs around 1100/300 and then it will be getting around 100/300. I'll turn my firewall off and I'll get around 900/300. Something has to have been done that's affecting download speeds...
All in all, taking the good with the bad, they are an average ISP.

I had been trying to get DSL service for over an year. In Carbondale, Verizon provides the signal but you have to pick an ISP. This makes DSL a lot more expensive than what it would be if Verizon sold you the whole package. Not to mention having to purchase the modem, pay the activation fee, no free months promotion etc. Anyways, I had nightmarish experiences with Verizon Customer Service who told me on and off that they could provide me the whole package and just did not deliver. They did not even care to inform me that they could not provide me service after telling me that the modem and stuff was on its way. Finally Verizon Presidential Appeals actually told me that they could not be the ISP. Prez. appeals experience was excellent.
Anyway, enough of Verizon bashing and on to Neon Internet. Have had their service only for a few days. So far so good. Very easy to get hold of Customer service. Zero holding times. My 1500/128 connection has been delivering 1150/120 which I think is pretty good. Low latency. Service started a day before promised. Everything is great so far. On the downside, I dont see a reason why a $200 early disconnection fee should apply given that I purchased the modem upfront, paid verizon for activation, am not getting any promotional stuff etc.
Overall, Neon would be your best bet in this area.

So far it's been a plesant experience with them. Any complaints I've had all go back to Verizon and not MICGI. It took about a month for it to get started (but they did start it the day promised) and the second the lights came on the ISP was waiting for a connection. The line is 768k/128k and I have easily hit those speeds. It's a dynamic IP and the 4 computers here each recieve their own. So far no complaints other than price. If it wasn't split with roomates I wouldn't pay it.

It seems that I have been at a struggle with my ADSL connection from day 1. Actually I have. I have had problems not only with Onemain (Midwest Internet) but with Verizon (GTE) as well. When I got my modem, I was able to self install without a hitch. I was able to connect and everything seemed fine and fast. Then I started running speed tests and founf my throughput was nearly always at around 100kb/sec. Unacceptable. The modem showed no problems and with my vast knowledge of the inner workings of my system and software apps, found no problems:
- Verizon sent a technician out to find the problem - Determination was my line was sitting near a T1 line, thus causing a drop in throughput - within 7 days my throughput was up to 600 kb/sec Great? NO! - within 2 days, I was experiencing lag, I called Onemain.com - I called and talked with umpteen technicians, all who wanted to know what my settings were, even though I explained to them, tactfully, that I had just spoken with another representative. I even had one technician who wouldnt believe me that I had DSL. - After 2 days of struggle, the router in our area was rebooted, voila..lag fixed...great? NO! - Now, my connection speeds are back down to 150kb/sec. -Verizon was contacted and has not returned any updated information yet.
This has been my biggest struggle working with two nationwide companies for DSL. Verizon telco and Onemain ISP. If I wasnt in a contract, I might consider going to a local ADSL provider. It would be nice, however to have at least a full week where I can have uninterrupted service from both telco and ISP and be able to utilize the service I am paying for.
