Maui Gateway is an unprofessional bunch. They have people sign a contract for DSL service, but give nothing in return for the commitment unlike mainland companies. Free modem, forget it. Is an email account included? Sorry, not for a personal account. Do they explain the ramifications of having a non-routable IP address? Simply put, no. Really, why bother having a high-speed connection if you can't do what is was meant for, FTPing, video conferencing, instant messaging, and peer-to-peer. Wow, I can pay almost $45 to browse the net a little bit faster than dial-up. I was told I could do what other ISPs offer for a mere $90 a month, plus the telco's $35 charge for the DSL line. If you complain to this family-run camp, they will hang up the phone on you. Please stay clear of this gang. Supporting local businesses is great if they treat customers right, but these folks really could care less about improving service to the people of Hawaii. As of June 1st, 2001, the State of Hawaii finally allowed Verizon Online DSL service to be sold in the state. You might want to consider them since they give you a free modem and other perks for the same price as the sub-standard Maui Gateway service.

Maui Gateway has been a reasonable solution to the difficulties of ADSL in Hawaii. In a state where limited bandwith, limited fiber optic access to the mainland and the change from GTE to Verizon has presented a wealth of problems for any ISP, they have coped admirably. They were more than helpful in finding out if I could obtain ADSL service, hooked me up with the right people to deal with at Verizon-Hawaii, and supplied any necessary info to successfully hook up my network, when the service installed. They have recently upgraded their backbone and software to improve service and seem commited to the customer.
As a technician I appreciate the fact they have never lied to me, shuffled me off elsewhere or blamed someone else for any problem. They have worked with me in an honest, straight forward manner.
As far as pricing, they seem to be the most expensive ISP offering ADSL on Maui. My account is priced competively with other ISP's on Maui with the exception that I have no dial up account, no mail account (I use their SMTP to send and recieve mail from POP3 servers where I have an account)and no storage.
A cold install of Bronze plus with all these features would cost $50 month compared with other Maui providers charging $25-30. The obvious advantage is that all Maui providers have similar backbones and by using Maui Gateway, I'm not fighting an oversold sevice for bandwidth.
Overall my experience with Maui Gateway has been excellent. Users with unreasonable expectations for service on Maui won't be happy anywhere. If you have an understanding of the problems we face in Hawaii, then Maui Gateway is a good group to work with.

Mauigateway has turned into an ADSL nightmare from hell. They have no backbone! Three T1 lines for all of their traffic. Their pricing structure is terrible and their reliability is non existant. Subscribers to ISPs such as Mauigateway should have legal recourse to have them put out of business.
I ordered BronzePlus (768/128)at $50.00 per month. Verizon is another $36.00. Average speed has gone down to less than modem speed (30-40 Kbps)over the last month because of oversubscription. The FCC should have a big hammer to protect consumers from this kind of rape.
