I have been using Fast Access for about 3 1/2 years.
I started out with 1.5 and am now at 6.0.
Aside from unreliable email, FastAccess has been rock solid. My down time can probably be measured in minutes per year. Even during two years of hurricanes and power outages, thanks to my generator, my FastAccess never went down.
Adelphia (now Comcast) offers me faster speed, but it's reliability leaves a lot to be desired. I tried it about 6 months ago, and dropped it after about 1 week. It was faster, but only when it worked.
Update 12/14/07:
Well another year has passed and my FastAccess is still rock solid. My speed has actually increased. I now average around 6.4/435.
Update 11/19/2009:
Well another year has passed and my FastAccess is still rock solid. My speed has diminished to just under 6.0, but this seems to be a system wide change.
I'd like to get back over 6.0, but in the real world it doesn't impact me very much. The reliability and consistency is much more important.
Mike

I'm quite satisfied with my service. I actually started on 3.0mbps then upped to 6.0. They also gave me a new 2wire modem/gateway. It's been working wonders.
The problem i had was that I only saw about a 100kbs increase. That didn't seem right to me. So i did some reasearch and found out that my lines might be a messed up. I call tech support friday and they told me they'd send someone out the following monday. Well to my suprise he came the next day. I was wondering why my modem wasn't syncing and i went into the statistics sceen and saw i was finally getting 6131 down/ 508 up. Before that it was at 4800 down/ 480 up. So anyway he came in and told me it was him that was fixing the wires and that's why it kept unsyncing. He said the wires were spiderwebbed and caused the decrease in performance. So now everything is up and running 100%.

Westell, went with naked dsl and dropped our landline. Only issue was with getting or landline # forwarded to our cell, it got lost somewhere. finally found a CSR that would take ownership of the problem and got it resolved.

10/2009 : Updated to 6 Mbit service 6 months ago. No issues.
I already had DSL service, so install was nothing other than sending out a new modem. My old one was flakey, so I opted for a new (free, rebated) one. But, even though line was provisioned over in a day, I did have to wait two days for the modem as the old wouldn't work.
The call center was in Argentina, and while very helpful, the call quality was awful. My tech had a wireless headset, and it kept fading in out. The call was dropped a few times, but she always called back (!!) She made a mistake in her information about the bundling, and called me right back to correct it.
3 down, 384 up, Dynamic address, PPOPoE, very reliable. Free modem wired for either USB or ethernet.
Biggest positive-no contract.
Update: 9/2007: Service is still good, no changes since the SBC/at&t conversion. Service has gone down a few times, web site is useless in terms of tech support. But, overall, still very good.
Update 12/2008: Still good service.

Had cable internet for years from a local provider and started having issues more and more often over the past 6 months. So went to ATT DSL.
Setup was a breeze, just insert disk and off you go. My connectivity todate has been rock solid. Speeds have been as advertised. No complaints what so ever. (ATT Uverse is in the next neighborhood over. 200 yrds away) was hoping for FIOS in my neighborhood but they arent planning an upgrade :-(
All in all very happy with the ATT DSL 6.0 package.
10/23/09 Still happy .. consistantly over the 6.0 speed and the upload is typically in the 300-450k range. Always have service never down ... couldnt be happier

My DSL has been fine from the beginning and I am still with them now and I have been with them for around 12 years. They have never had to come out and fix a line on the house or in it. The speed of d/loading is right at 2.9 Mbps = 345Kps and I am happy as can be with their over the phone technical service. They will help you with any problem, theirs or some other software, especially Microsoft. You also talk to a human you can understand, not to some person in India that you couldn't understand even if he/she wrote it in a chat session. Been there, done that with Symantec and I don't have a piece of Symantec on my computer anymore at all. They supplied me with a Westell ADSL modem, offered to set it up for me for no charge even though I handled the setup myself and I have it behind a LinkSys WRT54G router with Sunbelt's Vipre Antivirus and Spyware and compared to the local cable I see no comparison. I prefer the dsl because of speed, price and service. I tried cable and gave it back quick. Overall I have been truly very satisfied with AT&T and I think it's going to get even better. The price is not too bad either. I just wish I could get at least 6 Mbps.

When I first signed up, I received all hardware in a couple of weeks and was told all was working. Turns out provisioning the line was an absolute mess as the help desk people generally didn't have a clue as to the questions I was asking and at the time a truck roll was frowned upon. It's a long story but some folks here helped straighten it out and after 60 days of working on it, none too soon. The original PCI card drivers also needed upgrading and since that time I have switched to the Cayman 3220H. This eliminates the need for drivers on the computer (excellent when upgrading OS) and has definitely proved itself over time.
Reports from friends and others on-line show that this type of problem for install has been worked out over the 2 year period since it occurred to me. Also, the employees that participate here on their own time is a great help to all. It is obvious that the knowledge level of DSL has increased during this time.
Since that time, BSFA has been excellent in the service, speed and reliability areas. Mail ha,s worked well for me with the multiple accounts and aliases and newsgroups have not been problematic. DNS servers have been reliable in this area. Authentication connection has been quick and easy every time. Dynamic IP's with PPPoA have been fine for the work I do since I am able to hold the IP for extended periods of time using the 'always on' connection when needed.
If you have the choice between BSFA or CLEC DSL and cable, I'd recommend BSFA all the time.
Additional review update 2/11/07: DSL at the 3 Mbps range for my service and doing well. Price is reduced from previous amount and the service meets my needs for now.
10/29/2007
I am now using the DSL Extreme (3Mbps down/384 Kbps up) for almost 6 months - reliable, maintains throughput, DNS servers need improvement (use OpenDNS most of the time). Still satisfied with the service.
10/22/09
Same service for 2 years and has been reliable and maintained speed. Have evaluated cable but AT&T (bought out BellSouth) is still the better option in my area - I'm sticking with it.

I ordered DSL on 5/30/02. They told me the self-install kit was scheduled to arrive by the 16th, and to call them if it hadn't. It arrived about 5 days early, on the 11th. I opened it, plugged it in, and tried to install EnterNet 300. No joy. As much as I tried, it wouldn't connect. I finally ended up connecting to my previous ISP (AT&T Worldnet) a couple of times to apply the STH to STP hack, and it worked! Unfortunately, my speed is only about 100k per second. Thus, next week I'm going to do a home run with my father.
---- Update ---
I now have upgraded to the 6meg package and have moved to another state. Everything is great. Can't wait until U-verse comes to town!

16 Oct 09 - nothing has changed from last post except my zip code.
25 Nov 08. Noticed some complaints about ATT SE on the forum. Not me. I get 5M+ and often 6M any time and have never seen it down. Help desk seems improved but depends a lot on the individual you get. ATT SE is still good value.
07Aug08. Bellsouth is now ATT Southeast. Not much difference. Some annoyances on install but good value and NEVER DOWN (are you listening Mediacom!). Compared to Mediacom, ATT SE is spectacular, so everything in perspective. I have the 6000 down package, and generally get in the high 5000's on my hardwired computer; upstream is 400. My 3 computers on a home wireless network are a little slower, about 3m down, but this is compared to the 300 down these units used to have with Sprint. Aside: Looks like a VRAD box across the street. Pleeeeeeeeze let it happen! Can't wait to dump Mediacom for U-verse.
25Feb07. Sales and tech support SUCK. But, Fastaccess is great! Had to change phone numbers and get new Fastaccess. Ordered 2 Jan 3k/386 home network. Followed up midmonth, New Delhi guy said I was scheduled for mid-June, even though I had a confirmation receipt for 9 Feb. On 12 Feb I did an install and tried to connect; no connect. Called New Delhi; no help; they would send out a tech for $80.. A Bellsouth tech came out 14 Feb and found the first instal to the house a couple of years ago connected Fastaccess to a single jack in a now unused room. Tech did something outside and Fastaccess was up and running nicely. No charge. EXCEPT - I had ordered home newwork, and the other computers would not sync. Called New Delhi again. After about 30 minutes of please-repeat-that-because-I-can't-understand-you, the fellow said my modem didn't support home network. I would have to order home network. Ok, "transfer me to billing, please." Answer, "Yes, I will do that, sir. (pause) Sir, billing is closed. You will have to call back during the week." GRRRRRRRRR.
So, after you get Fastaccess, it's great. Everything up to that sucks bigtime.
****************************************
26Dec06 - Still on 3000/384 hard wire home network. Still works as advertised. Still best deal around.
****************
Three weeks abo put in home networking and upgraded to 3000/384. The first 2wire modem was faulty. BS was remarkably ineffective in figuring that out. On the other hand, one tech was very good at getting 2wire to work on a Windows98 system. So, t's mixed. Also, two computers get all of my family email accounts, but MY account does not come up on MY computer. Maybe it's a Windows98 thing; the other two are XP. Once the bugs are worked out, I still think BS Fastaccess is a good deal.
*********************
I've been on Bellsouth DSL for about two years now and it's still great and still a bargain. I get 1.1M downstream consistently and it's always on. You must, however, 1) avoid the help desk in South Carolina and 2) apply every tweak dslreports suggests.
*********************
The help desk sites in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia have been very knowledgeable, and unbelievably patient. At the site in South Carolina, only one out of three has impressed me as knowledgeable; the rest were very polite. If you get a good rep that knows more than a flowchart, you get great service. If not, you're on the phone for a long time.///My Presario 1245/MSW98 notebook kept losing the modem driver. A help desk stepped me through turning off the virus scan, screen saver, etc. This also stopped a problem with losing sync.///The connection was only giving 550/256 at first against advertised "up to 1500/256", but some tweaks from dslreports got that up to 1100/256 rather painlessly. FastAccess really has to be "tuned."///The initial modem, a green thing with two eyes, failed pretty quick. Bellsouth techs came out right away, spent about four hours, and installed a line filter on the house and a different modem, SpeedStream 4060. (Both used the USB.)///SpeedStream worked for three or four months but failed a couple of days ago. Was told it would take 10 to 14 days to get a new one -- wrong! My wife finally muscled her way to a supervisor. Modem is now on overnight delivery. Gotta shove your way past the first tier of help desks and get to the supervisors.///Email addresses are limited to eight characters -- WTF! But, it is very fast and easy to use.///Since I have access to fast Internet at work and our local library, I wasn't interested if 56k. I signed up for ISPChannel though through MediaCom when it came out. There is no numeric value low enough to post how bad that experience was. Words like incompetent, totally wrong, screwed up, dumb as stumpwater, clueless -- just don't come close. I never did get ISPChannel and it was hell anyway. Long after I didn't get it they called and asked my how I liked it! Then Bellsouth put FastAccess in my neighborhood and, despite some difficulties, I'm very satisfied. What they're providing for $49/month is a bargain on my end.
